The DC-9 was a reliable old warhorse of a plane. The DC-10, however, had a record of safety problems. I think it's time for Delta to retire those 40-year-old planes. I prefer Continental with its all-Boeing fleet and United with its mostly Boeing fleet to American or Delta.
Excellent video. I will be taking my first DC9-50 flight this weekend on DL and can't wait. The aircraft will have been a sistership to the one shown in the video. North Central > Republic > Northwest > Delta. Long live the DC-9!
That Plane or her sister was the first Jet service to the airport in my small city, TVC. It may be small, a bit cramped, and a bit rough, but it was light-years ahead of the old twin engine beasts they were flying. I flew on her in 1980 from Detroit to Traverse City in an ice storm. we were 100 feet about he runway when a gust of wind pushed us off course. It was a rush to feel those engines kick in full throttle and take us around.
Thats really cool because I recently flew on this airplane from MSP to DFW on Delta airlines! Thankyou for posting this and thanks to Northwest airlines for keeping the DC-9s in service for such a long time!
Nice promo piece. The DC-9 was never one of my favorites; too rough for a regular passenger liner, I thought. Kinda like using a sports car to ferry people between cities. Heh. I wonder what Mr. Middle Manager would think of riding in my 2002 Camaro SS between Chi-town and Milwaukee?
I watched this piece on 18 Feb 10. What was the piano music used for the sound track? It was very nice and complemented the imagery quite well.
@DC9RULES DC, the music is fine. I find that rock songs often just intrude on a lot of YouTube videos and I will mute them. So, YouTube has it's own music library you can work with?
My brother and i took a promo flight on a north central dc-9 in the 70's for $10 out of central wis{mosinee} airport what a great time they had the cockpit door open what a thrill for a 12 yr old!
Man that plane might have Delta colors now. I flew on a DC9-30 MSP-ORD a week ago. Looked like a brand new plane inside... much nicer than some of the 320s i've been in.
I still like flying American and Delta MD-80's which are the next generation DC-9. They are getting phased out more and more now for more fuel efficient aircraft. The MD-80's days are numbered.
As far as dependability some of Northwest's (now Delta) DC-9's are STILL flying after 35+ years.
Yes this plane is still flying under Delta colors now, along with others that went into service after this one. I have seen this plane many times since brand new, was strange to see it painted in the 6th color scheme. Flight crews would not believe me that I could have seen this plane since it was new. I just ended a 40 year career working these planes.
NWA customers: enjoy the DC-9 while you can! Most of NWA's "nines" are over 40 years old, and still do a stellar job. Unfortunately, the cost of fuel is killing them. Savor the "nine" and the JT-8D while you can!

This is what we call a real man's airplane in a real man's livery. No splotches with curvy, sweeping lines on white. Metal, stripes, and more metal.
All we have in Minnesota is Delta now.

Well some of northwest's DC-9s were sold to northwest from other airlines that didn't want the DC-9. Don't ask me why, the DC-9 was a good airplane
tofu46 2 years ago
Actually Northwest airlines acquired the 9's when they bought Republic Airlines (a merger between Northwest Central and Southern Airways).

The DC-9-50 was an under powered DOG compared with the -10 or 30.
