you aren't sopose to use starter fluid on a diesel. you can really screw it up doing that. and spraying into the air duct and not the mouth of the intake is pointless anyways. the only thing you are even getting to the engine is the aerosol gas. the starter fluid just sits in the duct and after cranking the air passing over it just dries it up. your not to bright are you?
@MrGizmo757 Well if all that gets the the engine is the aerosol gas then i guess the starting fluid cant get a chance to "wash" the cylinders, and isnt really that bad then, huh.
@fbscj7 Well i have worked at a shop for 8 years now and i seen one idiot do that and the desil ran away on him and throw a rod. desils dont have throttle bodies. its just wide open. unless you have egr then thare will be a small valve only to create a small vacume to control egr. out desils work by adding or taking away fuel the air is wide open it dose not have a throttle like a gasoline engine. so sprying anything down in thare could cause the engine to run away as if it were floored.
@MrGizmo757 A small amount of ether like that doesn't hurt a thing. Putting into the intake also gives it time to dispurse. The only reason it took off like it did is because the throttle was all the way to the floor, because it would've died if it wasn't. What color was the smoke? Black, because it was burning diesel. Using excessive amounts of ether is what causes problems.
@MrGizmo757 If any thing, It sounds to me that your not to bright. It plainly says on starting fluid cans that it is for use on diesel. And yes the air breather is a good place to put it, Why, just the other day I was cranking my ntc230 cummins and it wouldn't start so I sprayed it in the air duct and it fired right up! So go figure!LOL!
@MrGizmo757 not suppost to use starting fluid on a diesel ha ha very funny when its cold enought u hav to use ether ,you must not of ever tried to crank a diesel in 5 degrees , ether is the only thing to get it to crank even if you hav a block heater thats the only way
@MrMrcrain i work in a truck shop and the engines i work on have big orange warnings right on the breathers that say using ether or any other chemical starting agent can cause severe engine damage. big orange letter do not use. yes ether is used to assist starting but its controlled through the injector pump bypass feeder. not into the air breather. some of the old guys in the shop have done this on ones without a working fuel lift pump and blew the engine apart.
@MrGizmo757 on the older diesels ( not this one though) they were designed to use the nose candy to start, because they had lowered compression ratio's double the amount of rings and tougher components used, so all that combined means they really diddnt give a fuck. and if you dont believe me, look on most any early to mid 80's cat dozers at the starting instructions, it says if below 20*F use one capsule of ether( now what a capsule is, idfk but it says it)
@MrGizmo757 well u can use starting fluid but u should never use it if the intake heater is still plugged in or for other diesels the glow plugs still plugged in and never rev a cold turbo diesel.
@MrGizmo757 Actually you can use starting fluid in a diesel, you either have to cycle the glow plugs or grid heater first and then shut them off. If you don't, you will ignite the starting fluid and blow up your intake. Otherwise there is no harm to the motor.
@fx2ranger94 Actually....if you spray starting fluid into a glow-plugged diesel, it can ruin the glow-plugs. they'll start to bubble up. It doesnt effect grid heaters, but like you said..its a good idea to have it off when you spray ;]
are the back engnies hard to work on and the flat front front engines hard to work on i know the internatiol or eney other bus like that is probley easy to work on
@defiance665 If used in access it may also "wash" the cylinders of oil, but knowing how it works, and using the right amount, i dont think any damage has occurred.
Sounds like my cummins when its cold, the turbo doent work very well and until it warms up it wont go over 1200 rpm with grey smoke and rough running. And now it says no oil pressure after i shift. Not good lol
I'm afraid you don't quite know what your talking about. Ether isn't that bad if used sparingly. If it was as bad as the myth suggests, why did this bus (and other large trucks) come from the factory with an option for a quick starting aid(ether)?
cuz it is... and come with an allison at545 for a transmission... sweet combo... pulled a set out for my bronco mudder... but fuck the bus was fun b4 we did that

@MrGizmo757, you can use the starting fluid on diesel, as long the diesel engine is NOT equipt with glow plugs

@SpiritsoftheWolf diesels can be equipped with glow plugs and use ether, they just cant be on while your trying to start the engine.

Starting fluid is bad for diesels, It detonates before TDC and hurts pistons and rings.
