I've heard some beautiful steam whistles from ships, this one beats them all, Even the Titanic's whistle!, now my favorite train whistle was that of engine #475, the rainbow sun in thomas and the magic railroad
that is the most beautiful, mournful, haunting sound....reminds me of the old mill whistles from the early '70's...would hear this at 6am and knew my grandpap was coming home from Allegheny Ludlum. That whistle you heard all the way up the Allegheny.
@ACSBehemothHellcat As I said, some senator will burn in Hell for this. The Mississippi Queen wasn't even 40 years old yet.Her hull & superstructure are steel.
@ACSBehemothHellcat A friend told me he was riding the ICW & saw the MQ being torn up as well.Dunno if it was a major refit or demolotion. Some Minn Senator will burn in hell for this outrage.
If they don't they'll tear it down and burn the rubble, MY ASS! everyone the human wall if this happens don't let the Excavator go through! no more crusie liners! DELTA QUEEN ALL THE WAY!!!!
What is the Queen's claim to fame? On some of the steam boat websites, I always hear about the "legendary" Delta Queen. Don't get me wrong; I think its great that she has that reputation. I'm just curious about its origin.
@crazything117 : You asked a great question! Delta Queen is famous for many things. She was known as the Million Dollar Boat. She served the US Navy in WW2 as floating troop barracks and troop transport to and from hospital ships returning to the states from the war in the Pacific. She has carried international dignitaries, including President Carter.
@crazything117 The DELTA QUEEN began service as a overnight passenger Steamboat in 1927 on the Sacramento River.. In 1946 she was brought to the Mississippi River system via the Panama Canal has been in service most of her 83 years.. She is now awaiting a exemption from the Safety At Sea Act. The DELTA QUEEN is currently being use as a floating Hotel in Chattanooga,TN
@SteamCalliope44 lets hope she sails this summer! i live 25 miles west of steubenville ohio. i look forward to see this boat in person for the first time
I remember so well that boat coming through East Liverpool, Ohio playing the calliope and blowing the whistle. When I was young, she would dock in town and you could take a tour for 25 cents.
haunting. O_O

That is the best steam whistle on the river. In my opinion the best whistle I have heard on any boat/ship. Great video of the departure whistle!

I hope this does not become another sound of the past, but remains as a sound of the future as well for a whole new generation to hear and enjoy.
