we have a sloping block and have a retaining wall that is leaning and in need of replacement. i was quoted 20 plus grand !!! for this wall to be replaced by a crib retainer wall.
I would like to find out what sort of cost would be associated with this type of retainer.
Something from out of left field. What do you think of using gabions as the internal wall of an earth sheltered construction? An earth shelter would typically use besser blocks, and I have even seen straw bale used, but maybe an earth shelter with a rendered gabion could be a way of obtaining a strong wall up against the earth wall Macca?
Contact your loacl Maccaferri office and obtain gabion sizes and specs. Also look on your local Maccaferri web site for further information. There maybe some local case studies to review. You will need an engineer to sign off on your design.
Two walls 16" thick each, running parallel 12" apart (total wall thickness=50"), with insulation material in the 12" space between. Some sort of stabilizer connecting the walls together. Trusses bearing on the top adding lateral stability. Sounds good to me BUT I dont see anyone else doing it which gives me concern. Rocks are plentiful here and cost nothing.
ah, so thats what you call those things :) thanks!

How much did this Gabion install cost? How many yards of stone were used? Thanks.

can you build a house with this stuff?
straightjacket4sale 3 years ago
You could, but its about 30% air so insulation and drafts may be a problem.
Stability needs to be addressed as well for walls over about 2m.
