She has a beautiful voice, but I have to agree with so many others. She doesn't, or perhaps isn't able, to portray the power nor the emotion, the grief and anguish expressed within the story of the song. With Tommy Makem's version, I can't help but feel my heart breaking when I hear him. With this one...eh, no.
@josephonwhidbey@thingjob To correct you both, it's called Gaelic. And it's the old celtic language, still used in Ireland, and to a lesser extent Scotland. Not sure how Welsh fits in with Gaelic, afaik Welsh is a totally different thing from Gaelic. But I could be wrong.
She has a lovely voice, but can't carry this song. There is none of the passion, strength, anguish and heartbreak that one should associate with this song. Every single time I listen to Tommy Makems version I actually feel the pain of the woman, and am filled with such a pride to be Irish. When I listen to this I feel she could be singing about absolutely anything.
I´m pretty sure somewhere on the net should be the Kelly Family version, I´m absolutely certain I´ve heard Patricia sing this song in original irish version ;), so try to look around ;).
IRELAND - 7 MUSLIMS ARRESTED IN PLOT TO KILL SWEDISH CARTOONIST
4 men and 3 women were arrested in a plot to kill a Swedish cartoonist. Some of the muslims arrested hold Irish citizenship and some are originally from the Middle East. They range in age from mid 20's to late 40's.
They were detained by Gardaí in Waterford and Cork for conspiracy to murder the Swedish cartoonist.
My dad used to sing this all the time. I've never heard a girl sing it before. It is a fabulous song. Dad always said a woman should sing this song. I'll now have to learn it the way you sing it as you do a brilliant version :-)
As a woman, I think her emphasis on her sons' wails, rather than "my sons have sons" might be a deliberate interpretation. It's not the choice I make when performing, I go with the traditional climax, but I can appreciate another take on the song. It's good to see another woman singing this.
Being happy about all your grandsons heading off to bloody death, even if you prize their cause, is more of a guy thing I think. The men are all gone, and the women left alone to grieve.
Also, she really did not "punch" enough on the climatic line ("but my sons have sons, as brave as their fathers"). Tommy Makem really put much more emphasis on those lines, and you could really hear that fine old woman getting strength and determination as she defiantly utters those lines. Here, the moment just kind of passes by.
All of us can't be among the "pretty people". I like redheads, real or enhanced. She looks as good as the loyal gal that rides behind me on the Harley and I love her.
I've always loved this song, and I think she sings it well, but I'm not a fan of this video. The production felt cheaply thrown together, and the map of Ireland and its provinces was unnecessary. The maker should be able to trust the viewer to make the connection.
I agree with much of what you say. I even agree about the Provinces although not everyone really knows of Ireland. And it's cool to see all four flags.
The video could be a bit better but it's not terrible either. It's unique the way they move around and whatnot.
actually when one chats with the current generation of the Irish it is truly sad that many of them have no idea about the struggles or what the British invasion was all about and that is the truly sad part and perhaps why so much is often necessary when it should be obvious.

The young lady singing needs to be 'live' and inject the passion inherent in the wrods to this anthem

As long as the message gets across to people who may not listen to " rebel music" other wise, then fine.

Her moving around like that was very spooky-creepy. And the Ireland map was way too obvious. I wish there was more historical footage though.

shes scary hot, like a fire i would jump into. like my redhead ex wife, and mother too. its good to be an irishman.
now you know why the good lord gave the irish soo many hot redheads? he knew the whisky would never stop them from ruling the world alone.
