Explorers doesn't usually appeal to me very much, but this my sir is a pure pearl! Love that 70's looks and the neck-thru imitation (if it only would be solid). Congrats, this guitar totalli won my heart!
Dude that looks awesome! I'm 13 and I'm wanting to try to build one that looks like The Edge's (I believe it's a '78 Gibson Explorer) and I was wanting to know about how much did you pay for all the materials needed to make one and about how long it took you. I'm currently on Winter Break and I was wanting to do something so I thought why not I build an Explorer guitar? Lol Thanks!
@MrDontsingitbringit Me doing a cover of it and using it in this build vid. is much gayer than him knowing the song! But you might want to check his CD collection just in case! LOL.
If i thought i could support my finacial needs i would in a heartbeat as i really enjoy this type of work, it's very rewarding!
Maby someday when i dont have a mortgage payment i can turn it into a full time gig. They say if you love what you do for a living you never work a day in your life...... i guess one can dream!
im going to be honest you made a beautiful guitar but you should have used mahogany and u might as well had just made it a neck threw that would have been easier than glue a bunch of veneer.
@ColbyJMeyer I agree, the veneer work was time consuming. As for a true neck through, that would be ideal but i decided to build this guitar because i already had the veneer and the neck and hardwhare. Mahhogany would have been nice for the body but Basswood was all i could afford. The price of hardwood's has gone threw the roof, and i think i only paid $40 for thr Basswood billet. Maby a true neck through some time in the future will be possible, i would like to give it a shot.
@ColbyJMeyer The entire surface front and back is veneer. All the veneer pieces were about .040" thick so once glued on minimal sanding was required to level. The purple heart was very porous, when i glued down a scrap piece to test glue began to leach threw. This was solved by shooting a few coats of sanding sealer on the back side before applying to the body.
@stratomaster55 I did alt of reading in guitar building forums and jumped in head first. Its not hard just time consuming due to alot of attention to detail. The two most important things on the entire build were neck angle and bridge placment, these must be correct to build a guitar that will tune correctly and play well.
The rest is eye candy and this build really satisfied my sweet tooth, i am very happy with the results!
man it's far the most awesome and really beautiful explorer i have ever seen, and i have seen a lot of them.. it has very beautiful touch to it especially carbon fiber is really good... and i loved your choice of texture of wood on neck and choice of maple.. great just great!!! looks like alembic spider bas a lot with lines too
I did not built the guitar but in response to XBOXFR34K the pin-striping on the guitar seems to be strips of various wood veneers that have been flush mounted into the guitar body itself and not just painted on the body or thicker pieces of stock that have been laminated within the body.
are those pinstripe stickers or actual wood you're using to get that "neckthru" look to it. Im asking because i want to build a flying v with that appearance
@XB0XFR34K It is approx. .040" thick wood (Tiger Maple,Purple heart,Birdseye Maple,Wallnut). The only non wood suraces are the faux carbon fiber sides and the nitrocellulose binding.
PLEASE ANSWER... im building a guitar with purple heart and zebra wood and mahogony for the neck through part.... i was wondering how you did the grainfilling and staining with the purple heart and the other bass woods?
@eXkillswitch11 No stain was used on this build at all. as for the grain filling, I found the purpleheart to be very porous(hey thats me!) and needed to be sealed before gluing otherwise glue would leach threw the pores in the wood. Since i was not using stain i filled a few larger voids with medium viscoscity Cyanoacrylate (super glue) warning it will no take stain. For the main part of the grain filling i used a thick mixed nitrocelulose lacquer. Only use this method if using same cleartcoat.
@eXkillswitch11 Just wondering, you are using beutiful wood why are you planning on staining? You can add dye to your clearcoat if you want to add a tint to the final appearance????
@porousorifice LOL I did not mean staining! idk why i said that! lol but i have zebra wood and purple heart so i heard that if you use purple heart and use Z poxy(basically clear epoxy that can be used as grain filler) it will bleed into the zebra wood? Is this true? and that is good to know that i have to fill the purple heart because i was not aware! =-] and i am a newbie to professional looking staining so i was wonder the process of clear coating after grainfilling... thx gor answering lol
@eXkillswitch11 My two cents: Use Behlen Nitrocellulose sanding sealer and Nitrocellulose laquer clearcoat, if your useing a gun.(stewmac.com) I've had good results with Deft brand nitrocellulose laquer sanding sealer and clearcoat spray can.home depot and lowes carry it.Final prep. before sealing:Sand with 320gt wipe down wood with damp not dripping wet cloth, let dry, grain will raise, sand back with 400gt, repeat then spray sealer.scuff back to level with 320gt and reshoot sealer as needed.
@porousorifice So your saying i need to use sand and sealer on my flame maple top?just to make things clear... and i hear that you needed like 25 coats of nitro... i bought nitro and sand and sealer aresoal cans from reranch... heard they are amazing. Okay so i just have to make everything clear so i dont mess anything up, so sand, then sand and seal, then stain flame maple and then nitro it? okay and for the back with the other woods... i grainfill with whatever and then sand and seal thennitro
@eXkillswitch11 No as for the Maple it does not need sealing. For staining maple sand to 320 dampen let dry sand back 320 2 times. If you want that 3D POP deep drain look you should buffer the wood before staining.if solvent based damped the wood with solvent that is mixed with the die. This will help stain more uniform and less harsh. If water based do the same with water.Once dry sand with 320.The more you sand back the more contrast you get between the liter and dark grain or light sand if happy
@eXkillswitch11 You will not see this POP effect untill the clearcoat is applied. You should always test on a scrap piece of maple to help practice technique. By controling the amount of dye rubbed in you can achieve fade and burst effects. This can be done by sanding back aerea's also. I have found water based dye's can be a little tougher to get desired results. Here is a finish schedule for nitro finish. stewmac.com/freeinfo/Finishing/Finishing_schedules/i-nitrocellulose.html
@eXkillswitch11 Clearcoat:Shoot lite coat, 15-20 min. reshoot heavy coat 24hr's then wet sand LITE with 400gt dont go threw cearcoat. wash with pure ivory dish soap(has no bad additives like lanonin) and water. Dry and reshoot lite coat 15-20 min. shoot hevy coat, 24hr dry.wet sand 600gt for the rest of the clearcoat buildup. final sand 600gt,800gt,1000gt,1200gt,1500gt,2000gt,Dont skip grit's silicone free polish terrycloth first then microfiber, then swirl revover with microfiber.Give it hell!
@guitarslf132 I used a drillpress with an endmill. It can be seen at 0:54 cutting out neck pocket. It is made or metal work but works fine on wood. After i used a barrel sander to square up pockets.
That is the nicest looking homemade guitar ive ever seen!!! :O what is that thing you using at 1:45, it too small to be a router but doesn't look like a dremal :L
@guitarslf132 Actually i used the grout removal depth attachment that screws on to the end of the dremal mainly to keep cutouts at a square 90 deg.(cutouts for pickips ect. were already machined out at that point, and covered with the veneer). At this point i used a small barrel sanding bit to remove the veneer covering precut cavities.
fantastic build,,but it real hurts when some baffoon wont risk bidding 99cents for it on ebay because its not got that G or F on the headstock,,,,then again who would sell a piece of art like yours,,its a keeper
@rossandsarah2010 Thanx, I know what you mean. For most brand reconition is everything, but at the end of the day everyone wants a well playing instrument that produces a good tone and sustain!

@nessmonsta Your eyes do not decieve you! The dimentions of the body are the same as the "Matthias Jabs" signature series E90 Explorer gibson made in the mid to late 80's. The "E90" means 90% body size from the earler Explorers, with the claims of being more studio user friendly.

@westerntrainmaniac I used a Craftsman 16'' Variable Speed Scroll Saw (21602). Mine is not a variable speed model, no longer being sold but virtually the same saw.
man this is amazing!!!!!!!! I am going to start making a firebird myself and I wanted to know if u could giv me the specifects on the wiring (driling and wiring) if so thanks
@PAULgilbertFAN93 One thing i've learned is to come up with a game plan from start to finish, it helps save time and money. The most important thing is bridge placement, the distance from the nut to the 12th fret should be the same as 12th fret to the bridge. Also on the finishing process use all the sandpaper grit options avalible. Dont skip a grit thinking it will save time and money because it wont. Hope this helps and give it hell!
@porousorifice: Thank you sooooo much....any help is extremely appreciated and I may ask about certain things during my process if you are up to it?...
@PAULgilbertFAN93 I'm glad to help in any way i can. Feel free to ask, if i dont know i might be able to point you in the right direction to find out!
What a shame I'v no camcorder because I'd show you how I build real neck through Explorer's and Flying V's featuring all the best components. Of course, I spend more time than you and loose a lot of wood so I sell these rarely but expensive. Maybe the reason why I've no camcorder :o)
@kix7711therealone These are some cheap epiphone's planning on putting some ibanez super 70's in. The laquer is nitrocelulose by Behlen from stew mac.
@antoriverster If your taiking about the front of the headstock it's quilted maple veneer, the sides of the body is simulated carbon fiber covering used on RC airplanes.
this is constructive criticizm in no way to offend you ... but if you make another one you should put some of the wood stripes on the front of the headstock
@JeremieGalan777 i first applied boiled linseed oil (rub in like french polish let dry re apply two more times), this brings out the "maple pop" effect and enhances the depth.
Final i used nitrocellulose laquer. Airbrushed many coats lite sand between coats with 600 grit. then final sand 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 grts. Then rubbing compound (no silicone) with terri cloth then with micro fiber. Then swirl remover using terri cloth then microfiber pad.
thats a gorgeous axe...so far the best looking hand made guitar ive seen on youtube...im in the middle of building a neck thru les paul hybrid with leds in the fretboard...thats the hardest part getting all that wiring and circuitry embedded in the wood lol
@jw11432 Thanx, sounds like a cool project. I'm assuming LED's as fret markers!?
A few years back a new undrilled Roadstar II neck from the 80's showed up on ebay.
This thing had normal looking fret markers but a ribbon cable exiting from just under fret board! The seller didnt have any info on the origin or what the cable was for. I threw a $150.00 at it.It sold for $151.00 at last sec to a guy i had bought many Ibanez parts from in the past. Good luck hope you can post a vid of it! Peace
@porousorifice yes, as fret markers! lol i just recently finished the routing/wiring in the fretboard for it, that was very tedious..ill post a vid when im done!
What a beautiful, expertly crafted guitar. Cool idea to put the carbon around the edge. How does that affect the tone? I'd love to see it with a neck through design in lefty. : 0

what kind of bit are you using for binding on your drill and where can I get it from?
gyselboy 11 months ago
@gyselboy That bit was purchasewd at Lowes hardware. By changing the bearing diameter you can adjust the depth of edge.

Absolutely beautiful man!!I have just started getting into making guitars myself! Are there any pointers you could give me?
PAULgilbertFAN93 1 year ago
@PAULgilbertFAN93 One thing i've learned is to come up with a game plan from start to finish, it helps save time and money. The most important thing is bridge placement, the distance from the nut to the 12th fret should be the same as 12th fret to the bridge. Also on the finishing process use all the sandpaper grit options avalible. Dont skip a grit thinking it will save time and money because it wont. Hope this helps and give it hell!

What a shame I'v no camcorder because I'd show you how I build real neck through Explorer's and Flying V's featuring all the best components. Of course, I spend more time than you and loose a lot of wood so I sell these rarely but expensive. Maybe the reason why I've no camcorder :o)

Which material is the used on the whole side?
antoriverster 1 year ago
@antoriverster If your taiking about the front of the headstock it's quilted maple veneer, the sides of the body is simulated carbon fiber covering used on RC airplanes.

great axe man how long did it take you?
this is constructive criticizm in no way to offend you ... but if you make another one you should put some of the wood stripes on the front of the headstock
michaeltroke 1 year ago
@michaeltroke wow you know i hadnt thought about that until you mentioned it! Must have had tunnel vision during concept portion of the build!
Would have given a more authentic neck through appearance for shure!
Thanx for the input.

whoa.... thats gorgeous man!!! its like, i wanna have that on Christmas... man.. thats totally gorgeous man...
what did you use to make it shiny ?? cause it looks like laminated... haha... XD
JeremieGalan777 1 year ago
@JeremieGalan777 i first applied boiled linseed oil (rub in like french polish let dry re apply two more times), this brings out the "maple pop" effect and enhances the depth.
Final i used nitrocellulose laquer. Airbrushed many coats lite sand between coats with 600 grit. then final sand 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 grts. Then rubbing compound (no silicone) with terri cloth then with micro fiber. Then swirl remover using terri cloth then microfiber pad.

thats a gorgeous axe...so far the best looking hand made guitar ive seen on youtube...im in the middle of building a neck thru les paul hybrid with leds in the fretboard...thats the hardest part getting all that wiring and circuitry embedded in the wood lol
jw11432 1 year ago
@jw11432 Thanx, sounds like a cool project. I'm assuming LED's as fret markers!?
A few years back a new undrilled Roadstar II neck from the 80's showed up on ebay.
This thing had normal looking fret markers but a ribbon cable exiting from just under fret board! The seller didnt have any info on the origin or what the cable was for. I threw a $150.00 at it.It sold for $151.00 at last sec to a guy i had bought many Ibanez parts from in the past. Good luck hope you can post a vid of it! Peace
porousorifice 1 year ago
@porousorifice yes, as fret markers! lol i just recently finished the routing/wiring in the fretboard for it, that was very tedious..ill post a vid when im done!

damn dude, you did this whit passion i think...and the background music meakes amazing the video :D

What a beautiful, expertly crafted guitar. Cool idea to put the carbon around the edge. How does that affect the tone? I'd love to see it with a neck through design in lefty. : 0
Waltos 1 year ago
@Waltos I dont think the C.F. covering does much or anything to the tone. The veneer darkens the tone a bit though.
