You're cymbals don't need to be angled. They can be flat and low and it works perfectly fine. I just broke my zildjian 23 16 medium crash today. But it was probably just a defect.
@Jellybeanamania kinda true. thinner cymbals dispurse there energy around the cymbal better allowing for it to wobble, i guess is a good word, more. thicker cymbals dont wobble enough whick makes them crack easier. check out cymbals in slow motion videos. it may help u make sense of my ramblings. hope i could help

i hit my cymbals very hard, but i also have them very low, so my stick comes along the bow and the edge, not in the edge. And i hit very very hard, but they dont break and i also do the sweep across, not straight through. And they are rudes and 2002 wilds and aax:s
@allmetaliswelcome heavy rides have a better crash sound than light or medium rides which tend to fizzle out and have a really dry sound. you can check out the body video i favorited on my channel for an idea although that was a few years ago and i was using zildjian rides then
@lSTAYHlGH as far as i know, a heavyer ride is gonna be dryer, and will sound less "fast", as a crash will. heavier rides don't cut to their tone directly, (like mine, an istanbul agop XIST, which is quite heavy), or won't even crash at all!
lighter rides will crash easier and quicker, check this video of a meinl byzance extra thin ride and you'll see what i mean /watch?v=lAd4KUxhvn0
but if YOU like the crash of a heavier ride better, than go with heavy rides.
Having them horizontally isnt wrong, that's how mine are and never break them, and if your cymbals are rocking really bad, all you have to do is toss in the moeller technique, the little upbeat hits will keep the cymbal from tilting away from you and the cymbal sounds a lot more fuller :)
All my cymbals are horizontal (most of the time, when my hardware is able to stay in this position). Been playing for 10 or 11 years (badly ^^) and I never broke a cymbal. And I play few hours a day, loudly and punk rock/metal style. I learnt very early how to hit a cymbal. I recently improve my sticks technique and now I don't even break sticks (they get used and stuff but they don't break). The angle don't really matter. Barker breaks cymbals because of his playing and his sticks.
i was also taught (including what you did in the video) to kind of strike it at an angle, to cause it to rotate and kind of disperse the stress instead of having it at one place.
Nice man thanks lol a while ago i had my cymbal horizontal because people said it was good.
Thats a pretty sick shirt btw
Hmm one other thing i dont know if you still respond to these comments, but can anyone let me know if those splashes break easily? There pretty tiny and they barely have any swing when theyre hit just stand still which has to add to it breaking. anyway yea let me know
@ChineseDrummer15 wooden, Zildjian jazz sticks, i broke like 2 pairs of it and i was like wtf -_-, isit cus my cymbals are too thick? i donnu, juz started drumming...
@YaItsRiff all i know is that the cymbals are never the problem, maybe you're hitting the ride like you would a crash or simply just hitting too hard, i really don't know, I've been drumming for 4 years now and i still get conscious of how hard i hit
This was really helpful, I just got my first kit 2 days ago, and to say the least it's a pile of shit. The ride is cracked and i only have 1 crash and 1 hi hat and the crash sounds terrible. and the toms also sound like shit. Any tips for taking care of your kit? or how I can improve the sound of worn out cymbals?
@guitargod909 pretty much when cymbals warp/crack they will never sound good ever again. some companys are good at replacing cracked cymbals like zildjian. Its also never a bad Idea to clean your cymbals often to keep them sounding there best.
agreed. Travis barker is wayyyy to over rated. every says hes the best in the world...... bull shit ! Neil Peart is the worlds best drummer. travis is 87 in the list, hahaha..! niceee. thats all he does is fast shit. not even good
@drummer69961 actually i think there's no such thing as the best drummer in the world or the worst, i think there's just good players and bad players, also depending on the music, for example a slipknot fan will say that buddy rich had nothing, but he was an icon, i think travis barker is an excellent player, but i think he's good at what he plays, if he plays jazz maybe he won't be as good as copeland, and the same with everyone
well one thing i wanna say ive found from this video you say have em on a angle, i brake em on an angle and not on the flat look, and you may know about these but ive heard travis barker uses these, im pretty sure they are zildjian but they are not meant to brake, have you heard anything about them??
What do i do, my cymbol has a half inch crack on the edge and ive only had it for 2 months. I watched the video i i found i was doing everything correct.
thanks man!! i had my cymbals like that before but had to make sure i was making the right thing...

Dude I've been looking for something like this for aggges!!!! thank you!!! hey dude. nice vid. I bought a zht zildjian splash and after a month it cracked, also, i had it very loose on the stand. Any certain way you should hit it?
sooo i know im just a lil noob but before this i was always hitting my cymbals with the tip of the stick but now i dont but when playing the high hat do you also want to hit it with more of the stick then just the tip
Just a tip, you should probably loosen up that second splash you've got. It seems pretty tightened down and splashes crack a lot easier than crashes and chinas. Great video btw, I based my cymbal setup on your advice.
Hey man i just wanted to say this video really helped me. I'm fixing up my kit right now. I had one crash set kind of flat but kind of angled at the same time. Would that be fine if it is like that? Is it true that you have when you hit your cymbals the stick should glance off the side? idk how to really explain it but its like you hit and it kinda rolls off the side( not literally i just suck at explaining)
hey man i just bought my drummset about 2 months ago , and my crash cymbal begings to break , is it because the cymbal is pearl as my drumms or because i probably hit it to hard
@revit15 It's probably a mix of both. But the biggest "problem" is probably that you're using Pearl cymbals. They're made of brass and brass sucks for cymbals. When you replace them, get cymbals made of real bronze, man! :)
im going to post a video of my cymbals haha, i dont have alot of money so i kept playing on busted cymbals. but look for a video around by me. you will really get a kick out this! haha
So are you saying that if you have your cymbals flat. but low, theres a better chance you will be able to hit it correctly? I have my cymbals set similar to Mike Johnstons.
Also, would it be safe to say that the goal is to hit the cymbal with the minimal strength required for the sound?
Travis Barker is one of the greatest drummers ever...the only reason he plays like he does is because the record company tells him to do so because it looks better..and the company gives him the cymbals so it dosnt matter if he breaks them or not...and your right when he plays soulja boy he does totally smash the shit outa them but...olike i said he is paid to do so and he gets his shit for free...just sayin.
hi hats will break if the drummer plays them open all the time, which is what i did for the style of music i was playing. Travis uses the swipe method. and his ride will most likely never break since it is a Crash/Ride, and no one can even come to close to his style and precise attack, which seems to be the reason y ppl knock on him, cuz he's so unique, and sometimes the most unique drummers are the best drummers
Allo mate, I am just starting drumming and I got a tama drum kit and it came with some meinl hcs cymbals, and I don't know if this is standard, or I am doing something wrong, but I've been playing on them quite a bit and they keep getting marked, like have lots and lots of white marks on them, their not scratched or chipped, but they do have lots of marks on them, is that standard? or am i doing something wrong?
@tubedice999 are you using those white plastic coated tips? if so its the plastic that's making marks on it, its probably better to get wooden tipped sticks.
Really helpful video dude, nicekit as well, I cracked an A custom today, gutted, broke my heart when i took it off the stand to feel a slightly rough edge. i avoid all the stuff you said in this video, except maybe the live part however i am definatly going to work on that as £250 is definatly not something i want to spend yearly. my stands aren't great as well, the nuts tighten/losen by themselves. anyway, enough rambling, take it easy dude and once again thanks for the very helpful video. :D
@paulplaysdrums1 How is he a legend? yea he plays with style and makes it more look hard but its just basic shit lol...no offense but just my opinion..there are way better drummers out there, and its just a marketing scheme to sell products to kids...
its only bad if your striking the cymbal right on the edge against your stick. having the cymbals angled towards you and doing a "swiping" motion expands the cymbals life cuz your not creating too much stress from direction strike vibration. dont worry about how neat it looks just for show, theres never a reason to.
what cymbals would you reccomend that have good quality but also cheap, and i only have two cymbals so should i really be carefull or something or just not play as much?
Stagg DH or SH if you dont have alot to spend, they are hand hammered cymbals made with B20 bronze Or you could pay alot more for something worse like sabian B8's which are made with B8 bronze which sounds pretty bad IMO.
Just because they're stagg does not mean anything, try them out thy're really good
dont tighten your cymbals to much or you'll break your cymbals around the bell were you put it on the stand. or the outside rim will take a huge beating and you wont get optimum tone and ring.
a reason that u could b breakin ur sticks so much is 1 ur using to light of a stick or in ur case it looks like its from ur cymbals being to loose u dnt want them that loose cause u can break ur cymbals like that and break ur sticks u wanna try to put more felts or something and hit the cymbal wit more of a swiping attack like from side to side not directly down on it
hey i need help on knowing how to hit the cymbals wen you create that effect in a begining of a song or at the end when you hit the cymbals multiple times rapidly really fast and you dot even here the hits its just one loud sound plz help!!! some people in the audince say i sound badd wen i try to do that... :(
this video was very very helpful.... i just cracked a cymbol today...when should i throw it out.... will it keep on cracking bigger and bigger as time goes on.... or will it stop if i use propper cymbol placement?
@robzombie081 any size drill bits should work, maybe not something too huge, or just cut around the crack making a half square like this {_} either way, the crack will grow all the way around like mine did
great video bro .. but i think travis is great .. he got his own style let him alone man .. do your video without criticizing others ... maybe travis can affort more cymbals and you cant .. but you got an amazing kit so you dont have to be hating on travis's style of drumming
5:27 Well now I feel like an idiot for breaking my hi-hats.

Travis Barker is one of the greatest drummers ever...the only reason he plays like he does is because the record company tells him to do so because it looks better..and the company gives him the cymbals so it dosnt matter if he breaks them or not...and your right when he plays soulja boy he does totally smash the shit outa them but...olike i said he is paid to do so and he gets his shit for free...just sayin.

is it normal for cymbals to dent and warp?
chongzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 1 year ago
@chongzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Only if you hit them incorrectly...
marphi2 1 year ago
hi hats will break if the drummer plays them open all the time, which is what i did for the style of music i was playing. Travis uses the swipe method. and his ride will most likely never break since it is a Crash/Ride, and no one can even come to close to his style and precise attack, which seems to be the reason y ppl knock on him, cuz he's so unique, and sometimes the most unique drummers are the best drummers
blink182isbarker 1 year ago
having the cymbals straight and not angled looks cool, and you can hit them correctly, just be careful...
Dr00ski666 1 year ago

Allo mate, I am just starting drumming and I got a tama drum kit and it came with some meinl hcs cymbals, and I don't know if this is standard, or I am doing something wrong, but I've been playing on them quite a bit and they keep getting marked, like have lots and lots of white marks on them, their not scratched or chipped, but they do have lots of marks on them, is that standard? or am i doing something wrong?
tubedice999 1 year ago
@tubedice999 are you using those white plastic coated tips? if so its the plastic that's making marks on it, its probably better to get wooden tipped sticks.
pyromanizak 1 year ago
its ok to have your cymbals flat as long as their height is adjusted lower so you still get the angle he is talking about through this video.

you´re so damn right man, great video

Really helpful video dude, nicekit as well, I cracked an A custom today, gutted, broke my heart when i took it off the stand to feel a slightly rough edge. i avoid all the stuff you said in this video, except maybe the live part however i am definatly going to work on that as £250 is definatly not something i want to spend yearly. my stands aren't great as well, the nuts tighten/losen by themselves. anyway, enough rambling, take it easy dude and once again thanks for the very helpful video. :D

Nice man! I totally agree with you that travis barker is so over rated XD
Pepejoeyjordison1 1 year ago
Great info. I agree with everything you said here. I keep my cymbals angled as well.

Your camera can't keep up with the sound.
It takes some time to come back to normal sound

I feel your pain about the cymbal distances (i.e. travis barker).
TBH the way things were layed out on the Soulja Boy track were poor, but bearable.
However, on his most recent song, it's just ridiculous.

paulplaysdrums1 1 year ago
@paulplaysdrums1 How is he a legend? yea he plays with style and makes it more look hard but its just basic shit lol...no offense but just my opinion..there are way better drummers out there, and its just a marketing scheme to sell products to kids...

sry i accidently rated ur awsome vid 2stars
epacsenur575 2 years ago
hey just a question... did you buy a double bass petal first or symbols
zFATKIDz 2 years ago
i have my cymbals straight. why is that bad?
MALSIV 2 years ago
its only bad if your striking the cymbal right on the edge against your stick. having the cymbals angled towards you and doing a "swiping" motion expands the cymbals life cuz your not creating too much stress from direction strike vibration. dont worry about how neat it looks just for show, theres never a reason to.
NewDarkAges13 2 years ago
did u not listen its a bad angle it will crack your cymbal faster please angle it slightly and learn to listen.

how to prevent arms from getting tired!
13MONTES13 2 years ago
what cymbals would you reccomend that have good quality but also cheap, and i only have two cymbals so should i really be carefull or something or just not play as much?
LinkinPark771 2 years ago
i know its a little late but the sabian xs20 line is great for that remember zildjian sucks for beginner cymbals.
sabian1hhx1only 2 years ago
@LinkinPark771
Stagg DH or SH if you dont have alot to spend, they are hand hammered cymbals made with B20 bronze Or you could pay alot more for something worse like sabian B8's which are made with B8 bronze which sounds pretty bad IMO.
Just because they're stagg does not mean anything, try them out thy're really good
Lloyd1515 1 year ago
dont tighten your cymbals to much or you'll break your cymbals around the bell were you put it on the stand. or the outside rim will take a huge beating and you wont get optimum tone and ring.
CalTamaDrummer 2 years ago
i did that and there is little lines on the cymbal now
skidaddy21 2 years ago
a reason that u could b breakin ur sticks so much is 1 ur using to light of a stick or in ur case it looks like its from ur cymbals being to loose u dnt want them that loose cause u can break ur cymbals like that and break ur sticks u wanna try to put more felts or something and hit the cymbal wit more of a swiping attack like from side to side not directly down on it
x6pacsam 2 years ago
Make a video on how not to break your sticks alot ha.
AskMitchJackson 2 years ago
nice man! finally someone who tell people how to care about their cymbals instead of showing it in a neat angle just for showmanship

this video was very very helpful.... i just cracked a cymbol today...when should i throw it out.... will it keep on cracking bigger and bigger as time goes on.... or will it stop if i use propper cymbol placement?
robzombie081 2 years ago
You can drill a hole at the end of the crack, it helps a little bit, but cracks could develop elsewhere. it all depends really
scheyjosh 2 years ago
the crack is like only 1 cm. long...and what size drill bit should i use
robzombie081 2 years ago
hmm im not too sure since ive never done that
scheyjosh 2 years ago
@scheyjosh hahaha you looked pretty worried hitting you cymbal the wrong way, but i would to even if it was an example
AmbitiousMOnkey1100 1 year ago
@robzombie081 any size drill bits should work, maybe not something too huge, or just cut around the crack making a half square like this {_} either way, the crack will grow all the way around like mine did
blink182isbarker 1 year ago
@robzombie081 never use a drill bit do your self the favor and send in to warranty
AjaxpuffNstuff 1 year ago
@robzombie081 if i didnt get rid of it already i would cut it up in strips so its like chimes

great video bro .. but i think travis is great .. he got his own style let him alone man .. do your video without criticizing others ... maybe travis can affort more cymbals and you cant .. but you got an amazing kit so you dont have to be hating on travis's style of drumming
javier20893 2 years ago
Travis is very overrated.
NewYorkJets99 2 years ago
so who cares .. its not travis's fault.
