@jpatton1989 being a hockey player I have to say I've never seen a fight where they were doing it just for entertainment. Some of the higher ups in the league might encourage it (for audience interest), but if they're throwing punches it's probably for a reason. Sometimes the refs don't intervene right away because if two guys are at the point of fighting it's not like they're gonna back down until they get blood. If the refs break up the first fight there will be a second one to break up.

Would you want to go near two guys that are very huge compared to you, while they are very angry? No, neither would the refs. Also, that's probably half the reason a lot of people go to games. Additionally, it probably has a pretty unique effect on team morale, depending on whether your team's player won or lost the fight.
