I was a young child--- remembered walking on the dock, watching the smoke go into the atmosphere and the fire burning the trees. =[ That fire scared me so much. =[ I still get chills watching the memories.
Little known fact - the NEW BC GOV'T of the day had just laid off thousands of trained FF that year (including me). Many of us volunteered for free to fight these fires and were refused (15 years experience! at wildland firefighting).
I used to live in Kelowna and wanted to help, but my services were deemed "not useful"
horrible time in kelowna's history... great how the community pulled together though. i hope were not in a repeat right now with terrace mountain fire like right near me!its burning 4000 hectares right now and its un controlled..... PLEASE RAIN
Now they have to fight 3 fires on Westbank's side. They're doing another amazing job fighting these fires. I'm an evacuee of the Glenrosa fire and they've done so well getting it under control. I hope we never see a fire like this again.. it was awful. I remember it. I hope Westbank doesn't burn like this.
dude i remember this fire i was like 6 and my family had to go up north to quesnel for a while cuz my grandma was having a hard time breathing and we were/r living in winfield
I lived right across the lake, and the beaches were packed with people watching the flames, and everybody was glad it wasn't us, the folks in westbank. And now it is.
OMG!!!! I just moved to Kelowna from the UK last month and I heard that this was a dreadful fire and now thanks to your AWESOME video I can see just how bad it really was!!!! Thank you for sharing this.... Mike
yeah i lived right across the street from mission creek park and we got evacuated it was so hard to breathe outside so smokey i hated it but it was also kinda cool to look at it was kinda cool but it sucked at the same time;
The Firemen got way too much credit for their effort. Yes they did a great job in the neighbourhoods, but it was the forestry workers and the army in the thick of things.
Wow, what an ignorant prick. The thank you messages were clearly for all of the firefighters involved (forestry firefighters, military and regular firefighters).
Additionally, too much credit? how many hours have you volunteered to the fire service?? Have you entered an involved structure fire to attempt to save someone? When was the last time you did CPR for 20 min on someones broken body at a MVI before the paramedics showed up and made the call to stop resuscitation? Do you know what it looks like when all of the skin comes off a burn victim and sticks to your bunker gear?
i was living on the westside when this happened. this was so scary the fires were huge, lots of my friends that lived in kelowna their houses got burned down and after the fires it was like a bomb went off in the area and it was so sad
This was something, we got evacuated for few days so we went to my friend house and I think 2 days after the evacuation an other fire has been started by some kids on the Westside but they cleared it pretty quick.
I was working outside all days, nothing enjoyable.
wow that was something and i hated it i lived right accross street from mission creek park and i could barelly breath i had gotten evacuated for 4 days it was really something
I remember this, the sun turned orange and you coulnt breath for more than like 90 seconds without coughing, i lived RIGHT across from mission creek park at the time... they have horrible thunderstorms like today lighting was touching eachother
i live in lower mission, so 5 mintue drive to nearest destroyed home. i remember being evacutated for 5 days, and all the smoke and such. when the fire first started, no one expected it to come across that distance.
on first day of school after this, i remember at the assembly where the principal asked everyone to raise there hand if they had lost their house. about half the gym (500 students) put up their hand.
lol yeah i remember that it wasnt fun at all. i also lived right accross the street from mission creek park so i had the same thing as u i got evacuated for 6 days though. i do not want that to happen again. i dont live by there anymore i still live in kelowna though bye!
I live in the Upper Mission. Close to were the scene hit. We got evacuated immediatly, and the side of our house was all black and burned. We were right at the top. It was pretty scary.
I remember for that fire every morning I went outside my driveway was totally black from ashes. And most of my friends back in 2002 were living in Rutland and got evacuated and it really sucked...
Dude i moved into the westide into our house but we were on the other side, but we moved later that year, the sky was orange and it was sooo cool mind i was 12 or 11 back then
1. yes knox does beat all the schools W00T for dr.knox. 2. that was one fuckin scarey fire i was so close to it that my house and our cars were coverd in black ash and dust and i almost had to evacuate casue they thought it would come right over the back hill behind my house if it didnt get controled
That was not a true 'firestorm'. A firestorm is a rotating vortex that 'chimneys' ultra-hot fire gases up to the tropopause while drawing in ground-level air with hurricane force. Think Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo...
I remember standing on my roof in rutland and watching the flames. They were at least 3 times as tall as the trees around them. And watching the water bombers on the lake! that was sweet!
We had burning embers swirling around my front door a few days before we were evacuated, thankfully we didnt loose our home either but it was really scary for a few weeks.
Lol... I live in kelowna too.. I was evacuated for about a week.. The smoke was quite, you could probably see for about 100 meters at least.. What school do you guys go to? I go to OKM
i live there .
we literally can count on having fires every single summer.

Really? I guess those 100km winds incinerating 400 houses (of which 40 were inside of a few minutes) was just a co-incidence. Whew..what a relief.
