Start with a few trading runs, like elite. If you see a station with an icon near it you can communicate with someone on board to get a job. The story missions should also keep you buisy. Try to get to every sector there are some pretty ones with cool background music. Eventually conquor the x-universe :)

How do you get the HQ, without cheating?

You must have X3: Reuion (with the latest patch installed or Have the version that included Bala Gi Missions (included with the latest patch). Complete the game missions. You can start the Bala Gi missions at anytime I believe (anyone correct me if I am wrong). Once these missions are complete your reward is the Player HQ. (It a good idea to complete Bala Gi missions first before primary missions.) That way you can utilize the Player HQ more in my opinion.
