Guatemala and Mexico were very densely populated when Europeans arrived, thats why there are still many there (same thing with the Andes in S. America). keep in mind that the aztecs had an empire of their own and conquered their neighbouring states. had they the resources and ability of the spanish, they would have expanded their empire with equal, if not greater, ferocity.
