  • This song is maybe the most underrated one of a brilliant band. I love Big Country from the very beginning and it's a hard job to carry on after a milestone like The Crossing. But BC kept their creativity as long as they played together. Birmingham is just a simple demo track but should have made it to Driving To Damascus for sure. Maybe a second chance for a mature version with Mike Peters and Jamie Watson?

  • The solos in this song are real tearjerkers

  • Some of big country obscure songs are there best, why this one never made it on to an album I'll never know,Stuart adamson vastly underated.always in my thoughts

  • I find it splendidly absurd that a Scottish band would do a song about Birmingham, AL, but coming from this neck of the woods myself, let me say that it's spot on. It captures that itching discomfort about being stuck in the woods and run down cities of Alabama, with nothing but the thunderstorms, a jar of whiskey, and a dubious lady for comfort.

  • Maybe I'm different but at anytime, anytime, day, or, night, anytime, day or night Big Country catches my whole attention. (Maybe thats why I got fired once ha ha).

  • I've been having a crappy day, meaning I've been kinda down in the dumps for the whole stinking day. But then I started listening BC songs and when this came up... I first thought I bursted in tears, but after a few seconds I realized I was actually laughing. This is exactly why I love Big Country from here to eternity.

  • I like the way the pictures are rotated around the cube . . very new . . :)

  • The Best !!!!

Big Country Fan seid 1983 !!!!

  • @proximer100 ich auch the crossing war mein erstes album überhaupt

bin seitdem bc fan und werds auch immer bleiben

  • thanks 4 the upload i love this 1

  • My Spidey Sense is telling me Stuart had a particular lady in mind when he wrote this.....not to name names, mind you!

  • I've felt like that-what the song describes. Then when u get home,ur wiped out 4days!The healthcare inaction n US makes me feel that way too!

I'm stuck w/spineless politicians like blue dog craps down n Birmingham n the stormy weather,I'm just waiting 4the clouds 2blow,4the rains 2go.Feels like forever! I'm stuck here w/heartless,sell-out $grubbing wingnuts like u down n Birmingham&the storm is a raging, I'm just watching while the clouds explode, staying on the road While U watch me AGING!

  • Anyone have a tabf or this?

Or does anyone know the chord progression?

    STAY ALIVE

  • Oh I agree with you about Birmingham being about gold diggers, absolutely. We must have got out wires crossed, sorry, I was referring to 'Song Of The South' being about South Africa, not Birmingham :-)

Consummate has a sexual context of course, but is also a word to describe something being of the highest professionalism too. I think it's great the way his words here can be taken both ways, very clever writing :-)

  • Song Of The South was about South Africa and apartheid :-)

  • If this song doesn't put a smile on your face, nothing will :-)

  • FYI I believe that Republican Party Reptile is about ireland not the usa Republican party. and stuart hates capitalism and is one of the all time voices of the working class. this is why he had problems with the conservative usa. But now that the usa is a socialist country Stu would be happy!

  • since this sounds like american country music singing about birmingham this american BC fan has a great connection to this great song.

  • totaly underated band 1 of the best ever to come out of scotland, am going to the fan convention in liverpool next month cant wait hope to see some of you guys there/ bbw all the way rip the bigman

  • Like Stuart, another amazingly talented yet underrated musician that sadly is no longer with us,is the brilliant Warren Zevon.

  • I know what you mean rene2190.We lose one of the greatest musical talents of our time and most people are oblivious to what we lost.I am thankful that their are other people out there that feel the same way as us.

  • thanks for clarifying for me...nice song, Stuart certainly was amazing song writer.

  • are you sure he is not refering to Birmingham England ??? Why do you think he hate the southern states in U.S.A ?

  • You post great songs. Bless you. Thank you. Rest in peace Stuart, you are in a better place! Thank you for your music there will never be another who will come close to you. I have the picture at 2:26 on my desk at work, no one has a clue who it is!!

  • I don't think he hated the south but had misconceptions that went away when he visited there. I wish I could find the article where Stuart talks about how after having lived there, he actually preferred the US to the UK.

  • wow!!!!!!!!

  • great song ,one of my favourites from the damascus sessions.go raibh maith agat :)
