So people use images to lie or put forth their version of reality? Big deal, nothing new. "Increasingly consolidated media outlets?" I don't think so. The internet has done away with a monovocal mass media. Indeed the problem is the overabundance of rhetorical, bombastic opinion that abounds in this consumer paradise, cementing people into relativism or 'tolerance'. ie a superficial clinging to hollow "values" because the alternative, active nihilism is too frightening.

america wages war primarily by superiority of numbers and technology, usually not by more strategic methods employed by the east (which, beyond bushido, tend to be more effective at conserving the lives of soldiers, think the NVA)

so... america IS the war machine, our military "way" DEMANDS huge civilian support (industry AND bodies) so basically, it would be argued that the people "have to" be brainwashed

obviously the east brainwashes as well, but we're taught america does not
