Listen to his interpretations of Scriabin's The Poem of Ecstacy and the evidence of his power deepens. He was unique, similar to Furtwangler in his approach to severely powerful climaxes and logical development. Exceptional tension and power, amazing patience and focus.
i know this music in my soul and have listened to every available recording...this is a searing...loving interpretation...the notes are caressed and the pace slowed so that every nuance glimmers...svetlanov and his musicians become the music...extraordinary....visionary and sublime
I bought the Angel/Melodiya LP of this work under Svetlanov from a man who ran a record shop in a furniture store in Hobart Tasmania in 1969. This man imported Angel LPs from the USA.
The LPs I bought there have haunted me ever since......I think my soul was for ever seared by some of the most intense Russian music ever.. the Shostakovich....incomparable !!! Svetlanov"s Shostakovich "Leningrad" symphony still eludes me though....but I remember the 2 LP set like it was yesterday.....Jack Tas.
Evgeny Svetlanov was probably the greatest Russian conductor of the 20th c so it;s not surprising that he gives a great performance here, somehow he never fails to bring out the best in the music.
I remember my Dad, home on leave from the Navy, putting this on the record player, sitting me on his knee, and telling me a story about drowned sailors walking out of the sea to look for their lost children. I was FOUR YEARS OLD, for fuck's sake! Is it any wonder I have emotional problems?
If only there were more artists like this today.

I wouldn't have added a timpani at 14:46. That's not in the score. Although I admit that it's effective. Nonetheless, the composer is always right!

Absolutely perfect. This interpretation is much closer to the of Rachmaninov than intepretation Vladimir Ashkenazy.
