@jules74386 - While the Cap'n certainly took not small amount of influence from Wolf, he definitely used those influences to create his own sound, sort of like how Wolf would have sounded had he gone to California instead of Chicago?
@fefferton Have you heard Wait's latest? He's been listening to a lot of Beefheart lately, I'll wager. When I listen to "Things Will Be Better in Chicago". I keep thinking of the sound of "Strictly Personal".
@LBDumont The Waits/Beefheart connection is no coincidence. Waits openly acknowledges Beefheart's influence. Tom and his wife Kathleen even issued a public statement of condolences on the Captain's passing. You can find it on the Web site of Tom's record label, Anti.
Is it Beefheart or Waits on vocals? Hhhhhmmmmm........my ears can't tell. Awesome version of this tune though. More like outstanding. Wonder what masterpieces Zappa would've created if he'd be here today?
Absolutely great. Captain is one (if not the) of the best singer who express emotions through his vocals, and i'm blowed away by the agressivity and anger in this live! I'd given much to see him and/or zappa (well i mean rather both men if possible ^^).
im considers that immortality is the only goal worth striving for. He knows that it isn't something you just automatically get for believing some nonsense or other like Christianity or Islam. Congratulations on Achieving immortality Don Van Vliet and Mr. Zappa
@skepticarpenter I can't say I've ever heard of "uglets". If you insert the word "unguent"[sp?] it's appropriate and is a real & funny
sounding word that logically propels an afflicted man's lament. i.e. "Conceptual Continuity" was always a nec-
cesary component in Frank's framework for his convoluted and dense oeuvre. Excuse my feeble grasp of English as it may not convey the reality of Frank's Biscuit Crux I cling to with a tenuous grasp. That's the way
that's the laziest and most loping 12 bar I've ever heard....I'm getting wood. I followed everything that Frank and Don did way back then...a bit Beatles/Rolling Stones, I remember Don doing the voice on Willie the Pimp.....similar atmosphere to this...menacing but homely...Hot Rats....Hot Zits...I'm approaching 60 now but hearing and seeing this is oiling my knees. Frank was a bit OCD about recording stuff as I recall..maybe his widow will understand his future thoughts and release them to PD
This reminds me so much of 1960's era rock.I know this came out in 1975 and I am surprised that I did not see Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa back then. You do not hear music like this anymore.
I saw this tour. Beefheart was brilliant, played trombone. A fan held his hands out at the conclusion of a solo [in hopes Don would give him the instrument, I suppose]
I wonder how he felt when the Captain emptied the spit valve on him.
now that's a sublime kind of blues that- forgive me for saying- has white man's blues writ all over it in the best possible way- Beefheart really carries this off but I also love the little guitar lick- zappa makes it sound easy- sometimes zap's best when he reigns it in a bit
mcsushi999. check out clear spot beefhearts brilliant album from start to finnish. i understand how he is very misunderstood. and he really is . pure , unique and true . off the wall genius
I love this original version of the torture never stops, never understood zappa's fascination with the reworked version he put on so many live recordings. Beefheart has the perfect voice for this great text
although I"m a big fan of the captain, I"d have to say howlin' wolf the teacher and the captain the student (O)-(O)
