i hate how everyone says he "has no soul while playing." He's a professor at berklee, and enjoys what he's doing as well as knows what he's doing. musicians dont trash talk other musicians. its called respect. also, hes a metal guitarist. shouldnt be watching this if you arent into shredding like this either
I don't even like yngwie ( i loved him when he was Alcatrazz, but that's it), but this clown has the same guitar: cream colored scalloped strat ( but a cheap fucked up esp, instead of fender), cheaper jewelry (silver instead of the gold jewelry of yngwie), and the exact dame neoclassical licks...
I'll never forget being in Joe's office at Berklee. He showed me and my friend some sick sweeps, but all I could hear was his braclets shaking on his wrist! (he was unplugged). Great skill but I thought he lacked emotion.
As a 30-year guitar veteran, I have grown so extremely weary of all the "guitarist A is better than B" shit. You don't hear pianists and violinists spout off this shit. Just learn what you can from everyone who has something to teach. What good does it to the guitar community to propagate "my favorite kicks your favorite's ass" arguments? The guys you're talking about don't do that shit themselves.
@48eRiF Yngwie could never play this clean and with this much content. Yngwie's licks are empty. I'm not into this style, but Joe knows what he's playing and doesn't just regurgitate pentatonic licks with token harmonic minor scale licks thrown in. He teaches real classical pieces in his lessons, as opposed to Yngwie, who likes the sound of the classical stuff, but couldn't play a real classical piece to save his life.
@48eRiF Hey, Vinnie Moore looks like Yngwie, too. And Richie Blackmore. And Dave Murray. And Randy Rhoads. And Dave Mustaine. And Jeff Hanneman. My God! There is a conspiracy of guitar players who are trying to be Lord Yngwie!. Even some older players have been trying to copy Yngwie, years before he even came on the scene! The evil bastards!
@MartyFriedmanRulez66 No more than Joe does. My point was that they all have long hair, making them "trying to look like Yngwie", as if he started the long hair on guys trend. Please try to keep up.
Typical Joe Stump.... SLOPPY. I started this and he missed a note after barely 2 seconds!!! first lick is right, then vibrato, then the same lick with the whammy bar, but there's a note missing... And if there's not supposed to be a note, then the timing is off, so I guess there should be one.
It's all the time like that with Joe stump. I really like his compositions, but PLEASE get tight, it hurts my ears. All popular shredders are more tight then Joe Stump.
I'll have to open an exception and repeat what I always post here on youtube but I'll talk a bit more because you are seeking perfection.
Joe Stump has perhaps the greatest vision of all electric guitarists... He can really devote the entire composition into a single instrument. The result is closer to the rock with classical music. Yeah, Hendrix playing classical...
But if you search for perfection should perhaps listen to Baroque or acoustic instruments.
I do seek perfection, but i really like a loose way of improvising, like for example Yngwie does it. He is never off with timing, he never misses a note. Guys like Satriani, Vai, Petrucci never are off like this either, they just make everything fit. Listen to Speed Metal Messiah from Stump. I love the song, but he's completely lost at some places.
I might be biased, as I play a mean guitar too, and I'm a big fan of Yngwie, but your ignorance is only topped by your single-mindedness, and total lack of knowledge by guitar players, as well as music in general! Joe doesn't want to be Yngwie, but he has total respect of his playing, and Joe said that Yngwie was one of his influences, just like Blackmore, M. Schenker, G. Moore, U.J. Roth, and many of classical composers.. BTW, "Guitar Magazine" named Joe is the fastest top 10 of all time!
Don't matter if he wants to be like Yngwie, Yngwie is awesome, and Joe is awesome too! Kudos Joe!...FYI "night of the living shred" goes for $100. on ebay.
@ya6655 Agreed. Stump is much more hard rock/metal than Yngwie. I don't see Stump putting out an album with a full orchestra on it, at the very least.
Yes you guys are foolish trolls biased on excerpt videos you tube.
I have the whole video and albums of Stump cause i wanted to check by myself and studying the patterns and hell no he got his own style shred, leave malmsteen alone !
oh man... hate being a troll, totally respect this guy and his "followers" but... this is the most noodling, ultra-boring demential non-musical intro to an instructional video I´ve ever seen...
I never know he was an assistant professor at Berkley thats very cool..
het when we were kids we all emulated hendrix so I dont see why the haters are on Joes case just because he loves Malmsteen.. I am sure in time he will find the music inside of him and add that to his awesome technique... say what you will about hime but the guy has killer chops thats for sure..
Ah good old Joe Stump, Never have I seen a player with such a lack of his own personal style or creativity. This guy is a perfect example of someone who did nothing but sit in his room learning neoclassical metal, and yngwie songs. (Say what you want, this guy IS an yngwie clone, no originality and is noticeably worse which is kind of sad for someone who devotes such time to a single style of music). I don't know why he gets so much attention, he brings nothing new to the table.
@shlokda How long have you been playing guitar? I thought so! If you knew anything about music, all musicians steal each other's secrets. So who do you think has his "own personal style or creativity?" Jimmy Page? See Willie Dixon Jimi Hendrix? See Robert Johnson, Chess records SRV? See J. Hendrix, Muddy Waters, several other blues players. As far as you saying that Joe brings nothing new to the table, I admit that Yngwie came 1st, but Joe is a pioneer of a "shred" style.
@Chrisferartu 10 years. I never said you can't take other's licks and styles. Of course that's how you further your own ability. However, there's a line that you must draw between borrowing, and flat out cloning. Also, how does Joe dressing like Yngwie and Ritchie, and playing almost the exact same kind of guitar as Yngwie, have anything to do with his originality? Joe is hardly a pioneer of shred guitar, there are far more noteworthy and accomplished players in that style/genre.
good job joe !!!!!! i"m a yngwie malmsteen fan !! but your sounds are cleaner, your playing not false as your speed burns up ( what yngwie does ) and your ego is much better than yngwie !! 10 points for you !!! greats from the netherlands !!

I do not like Steve Vai because the guy just does not change the tone in the songs.
Anyway I'm glad I need to find the way to listen to music technically like you perhaps.
I still insist that Stump guitar has a lot more power than those of Malmsteen and the result is a much more powerful neo-classical rock.
And maybe those mistakes are an error that studio editor ignores and not from the musician. Take easy.
