I remember on this album,he added some comments including"to get best effect listen to this album on your own late at night as loud as you can,I did as suggested many a time;)
This is one of my all time favourites and until today I didn't know the title of this song. Thanks google, thanks youtube and thanks to the person who uploaded it.
I can remember listening to this track and others everyday and night. lights off blaring in my headphones. this track seemed profound to me at the time. It still does in a way. always will do. love everything about THE THE n Mtt Johnson. yep i even changed my name to matt johnson
An absolute inspiration. I have been listening to his music for years and cant fault any of them. This particular song was one of my favourites, and is so apt! Just wish I had seen him live!
This track is quite apt for me now and as it was when i first listened to it when it first came out " another year older and what have i done my asperations have shrivaled in the sun, ive been crippled by guilt blinded by science, ive been waiting for tomorrow all of my life " brilliant ! ( date 1st jan 2011 )

One of the most powerful intro's to a song/album ever.. That drum line, then the sound of bombers, then 'I'm hiding in the corner, of an overgrown garden, covering my body in leaves and trying not to breath'... F'in dark sh*t.. Awesome..
This track still scares the shit out of me. It tells a tale of the despondency and the futility of trying to keep on living .This track was definitely a precursor to the likes of NIN and mid-period Ministry -I'm sure of that.
What a brilliant start to a brilliant album. If I was a boxer I would use this as my entrance theme tune. The drums, the lyrics, the melodic hooks, the darkness.
I'm just grateful I found The The in my late teens (back in the 80's). Matt Johnson fucking sorted me out. I was in danger of spinning out of control and it was music like this that pulled me back from the brink.
love it

The power and precision - venom - of Zeke Manyika's drumming on this track (and Giant and Twilight Hour) still blow me away. Incredible stuff.

As a music snob, I have one favorite / (artistic expression I judge the best) for each decade. Guess who gets the 80's. All his first four records.

This album took about 20 seconds to "grow on me".
Normally it takes about 3 or 4 listens. Not this one !!!

I get that, but the thing about Soul Mining is that it takes a few listens to really hear what is going on.

I'm back in '84 again! Thanks!
All desires have been denied
To put me in this state of mind
Another year over and what have I done
My aspirations have shriveled in the sun
I'm crippled by guilt, blinded by science
I've been waiting for tomorrow
All my life
He makes gloom and despair sound like things to strive for.
