have we forgot about zappa in 1966? i am a huge pink floyd fan and beatles fan but as far as concepts are concerned in music, it had been done ealier. sure, pink floyd does it better than most. i really dont see how anyone can disagree with that thought
I rember seeing that "Televison Personalities" song on rage(Australian Late Night Music Show). I thought it resembled The Barret Period Floyd a lot. Actually, That Band once Released A song Called "I Know Where Syd Barret Lives". They Went On tour supporting David Gilmour, But where removed after Reading Syd Barret's Home Adress Onstage.
yea thats interesting , what isn't about this band I tell ya . Still hooked after 25 years over here . I'm 35 and I have brothers and one close to Gilmours age and we are all cracked out on Floyd . I can remember listening to The Wall and Final Cut right after they were released on vinyl . DSOTM was being cut the week I was born in Nashville during 72 . Love this band , but I'm one of the few who shows his dislike of the Syd days , MUCH RESPECT but didn't care for the tracks much .
Hmmmmmmm. The barret days peoduced a lot of inovative songs.......i suppose, post barret material was more soundscape-oriented than the barret days....Interstellar overdrive is an excellent example of the pink floyd pushing the limits in the barret days. Thhe lyrics were more about syd examining his percived madness maybe? People, tell me what ya thinks.
per Gilmour I think he stated about half of all bass work he himself did , now as to what albums you got me there . I know he said he did it simply because he could do it 5 times faster than Roger and it just made sense . He also stated ( Gilmour that is ) that he was dissapointed in Roger not ever having interest in bettering himself as a bassist . Another quote from David was that Roger occasionally thanked him sarcasticly about winning Roger bass playing awards , and then would laugh . ;)
Yeah. For example, "one of these days" has two bass trcks. Gilmour starts the song, and Roger joins in after about 8 bars. He also plays bass on the pompei version, though you only see it once, in a wide shot from the mixing desk. he overdubbed the pedal steel in paris. You dont see much ov ANYONE apart from nick mason in that song actually!
you may already know this, however, several film reels of film from the pompie gig were stolen/lost in france, and therefore the only reel they had for one of these day was from the camera on nick
yea, when the directors cut was being made, The Director (adrian maben) discovered that much of the film was Gone! Also, they were fighting a deadline, therefore adrian has described some of it as "rushed" "feeble". Its still a piece of great art.
I did hear that Dave did some of the bass work for the Floyd early recordings.
The reason why you see a lot of Nick Mason on the Pompeii verson of One of these Days is that the film footage of the other band members was lost/destroyed so they had to put the piece together without editing shots of the rest of the band.
In the early days that Rog couldn't tune his bass so he used to let Rick tune his bass. But I do like Roger's style of playing bass.
I had a look on the net for the bass, apparently only black and white photographs exist of the bass. I read that it was used extremly rarely in the 70s. its got a rosewood fretboard, and is painted in a german WWII aircraft style.
yea Waters rarely played anything at all in the studio , sang obvioulsy about it other than help direct the action . Gilmour always did the heavy lifting .
I wouldn't say that. On "Animals " and "The Wall" Gilmour handled most of the bass duties but Waters played a lot of guitar in those albums. But besides those two albums, Waters handled almost all of the bass work. The Final Cut doesn't feature a single song with Gilmour contributing on the bass as with Dark Side, no GIlmour bass there either.
Yeah--not fretless, but you're right, does look like it. But truthfully he isn't really that great a bassist--and fretless ones are damn tough to pitch right, and frankly I don't think he would've bothered. Never really passionate about it.
Yeah I doubt he'd ever go as far as to playing one but I think he's a prettty solid bass player. "Money" has got a damn good bass rif but I see what you mean.
Yeah--I don't know if this is true or nto though but I think they had Gilmour play that, not sure to tell the truth; I mean in concert obviously Waters played it. He's not Geddy Lee, but he's adequate. I mean I tried one once and it completely fucked with my head (and hand!), y'know?
@miamad how are the Floyd garbage? They are so innovative how are they GARBAGE

Biding My Time is probably my favorite EARLY Pink Floyd tune -- terribly underrated. This video is amazing!!!

Biding my time is a very underrated music.
The same happens with other jazzy Pink Floyd's song, San Tropez from Meddle.
Spectroman10 3 years ago 2
Ohh yeah baby, St Tropez is just excellent. I love it, makes you feel great (at least to me)

i love Rick's piano improvisation at 3:30
almost Dave Brubeck jazz style - you could make a decent song from that riff.
Miss you Rick. The quiet Floyd.

One more thing, anyone know if that bass Roger is playing had camouflage colours, and if so, did he do that himself, or order it like that?

Actually he is not. I don't think he ever has.

I guess it isn't a fretless, looks as though it might be but I suppose it isn't.

Yes, but that was not Rog playing it. I believe it was Gilmour.

in the later years, yes. like animals, he only played bass on dogs. everything else was Gilmour. the earlier years, Roger did a lot more bass.
