i'm actually amused by the comments stating that Ginsberg was gay and jewish. Why. Yes, he was. However, being gay and jewish does not make his work is good OR bad. I like Ginsberg's poetry because I find it beautiful and intriguing. Whether he was gay or straight, jewish, catholic, muslim, it doesn't really matter to me because he still produced what I deem to be amongst the best pieces of poetry in the history of mankind.
I love this poem so much. People are so quick to diminish this as filth but there is much more to this poem then the swear words...there is a real message here, a real picture of behind-the-scenes 1950's. Ginsberg is brilliant and his words are true. I love his authenticity and his ability to see deeper than what meets the eye. What a great mind!

Ginsberg was an icon in the beat movement. His ideas of freedom stem from great minds such as Aldous Huxley. What do we truly know about happiness or freedom? Who would question such things? What kind of ideas would provoke such questioning? The events of our time surely influenced the process in which this took place. Ginsberg was an outlet for the expression of these thoughts in his time.

@DarioColon He's describing his vision of america and honestly, I think it's still very relevant today. If you take the time to actually analyze his poetry there is a lot you could learn from it. In this particular line, you obviously saw one of ginsberg's homosexual references which can be taken literally. But if you think about it metaphorically, I think he's trying to explain how a lot of people, even in today's society get screwed over on a regular basis and do nothing but ask for more.

My favorite part of this poem is the line that ends "and ended fainting on the wall, eluding the last gizm of consciousness." That whole line has so much momentum, it's nearly tangible. Why does the audience laugh so much, especially at that line? When I recite this poem and get to that line, it's such an intense experience...The laugh track detracts from it...

It was proven to be not obscene in the court of law, as to tell the story Ginsberg wanted to, he needed to use such language. I saw AG open up the intoxicating possibility, to my Sixties highschool friends, that if they were unhappy they were poets, so anything they wrote was poetry. If it didn't quite work they could chant it. I'm the only one of them who became a published author. They substitute taught, lived off inheritance, took care of dying parents so they could move back home, took HR job in a bank. Ginsberg was an icon in the beat movement. His ideas of freedom stem from great minds such as Aldous Huxley. What do we truly know about happiness or freedom? Who would question such things? What kind of ideas would provoke such questioning? The events of our time surely influenced the process in which this took place. Ginsberg was an outlet for the expression of these thoughts in his time.

@DarioColon He's describing his vision of america and honestly, I think it's still very relevant today. If you take the time to actually analyze his poetry there is a lot you could learn from it. In this particular line, you obviously saw one of ginsberg's homosexual references which can be taken literally. But if you think about it metaphorically, I think he's trying to explain how a lot of people, even in today's society get screwed over on a regular basis and do nothing but ask for more.

I suggest you watch "Howl" the movie with James Franco. It's basically a reading of his poem with great imagery and it tells you a bit about Ginsberg's life.
It's great. Just watch it. You'll thank me later.

@DarioColon What about the sheer boring uncountable hip hop songs that don't even bother to hide their filth within word play and just say i fuck you in this club, or a million other songs, poems, paintings and movies that can't even dream of speaking or being with any kind of experience like HOWL. @DarioColon Maybe we both should have asked each other some standard questions first. Like: Hey what kind of hip hop do you listen to? To which you and I would have replied: Many varied forms. The truth is that the majority of hip hop listeners have no time for intelligent hip hop because they are swarmed with the pop media. MTV's impact on musical culture is: Yes, Hip Hop singles are the minority in relation to vast amount of hip hop, but the majority of listener's only care about the singles.

@fantheofungle Well what is your definition of a "Hip-Hop listener"? No real fan of Hip-Hop culture just listens to the radio. Take Jay-Z and Kanye West's new single "Otis". The single itself has nothing particularly intelligent, but look into Jay-Z's catalogue and you will find some of the greatest Hip-Hop songs of all time, and look at Kanye's career and you'll see one of the best producers at work. The singles are just meant to catch the attention of an amateur audience. Biggie did the same.

My favorite part of this poem is the line that ends "and ended fainting on the wall, eluding the last gizm of consciousness." That whole line has so much momentum, it's nearly tangible. Why does the audience laugh so much, especially at that line? When I recite this poem and get to that line, it's such an intense experience...The laugh track detracts from it...

I did not say this "Dude' ripped Jim off. omg all I said is "it sounds like a Morrison poem" Meaning it reminded me of something of Morrison's & That I really would like to find Gensberg's works & check them out! So: "Dude" don't even start silly drama with me and stop putting words into my mouth.
