David McWilliams died in 2002 - he was 56. He was a prolific songwriter, and involved in music all his life: This particular song itself is, believe it or not, about a homeless man who McWilliams knew from his days in Ballymena, in Northern Ireland.
Beautifully "crafted, vivid lyric writer"some say a one hit wonder, but he never got the promotion.publicity he really deserved-Catchy melodious tunes but sometimes the backing was over orchestrated..and didnt enhance his guitar work...PITY!
another "could`ve been.if ONLY.. ."Memorable ,better than Peter Sarsted!
There´s a Spanish version of this song. It´s sung by a Lady, her name is Ana Belen. And the name of the song is "Vuelo en libertad" Check it out! it´s just as great as this version, of course, with a feamle voice...kisses!
OMG!!! I checked out the version by Ana Belen & it's AMAZING!!! Thanks & P.S. The American pop group, The Grass Roots also did a great version back in 1968, & I love that version, infact I LOVE any version of this pop MASTERPIECE!! Thanks in Gary in PA USA
in canada, heard the strains of this song on programme 'Heartbeat'...took a while to find it...in canada few songs from outside north america were...or are...ever played...thanks to youtube I seen it for first time...I'd like to see canada for LAST time !!!!!!
Of course this is the original its 1000 times better. The only cover i can think of which surpasses the original is All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. Bob Dylan did the original!
This song is still remembered by many. It never entered the UK top 75. It was played constantly on the pirate radio station Caroline. They were promoting the artist for the record company. If you like this check out his other material from that time. Similar production with lots of lush string arrangements and a distinctive bass.
David is from my home town of Ballymena and my sister used to babysit for him. this song is magic
