DR.STRONG :I didn't want to bother you on your holiday. I'm not implying that Mr. Alex Young should drop what he's doing to make a video. It's just that with all the activity on the Sun the last few days, I was curious what was going to happen next. You said Alex was doing this as a favor for you, it is also a favor and a act of kindness for me and all of your subscriber's. Well anyway DR.STRONG enjoy your days off, sorry for bothering you, and keep safe.
I thought DR. Strong said someone was going to be posting video's when he was out of town. What happen? No vid., yesterday and nothing so far today. Anybody know if DR. S. fill in guy is posting video's elsewhere?
@706wilson I am not sure what happened - I haveno mesage from Alex but he does this as a favor when he has time from his full time job. I suspect he is busy - check out the links in the description Box - some of them lead to Alex's pages
@706wilson Alex is doing this on a time if avail basis as not much is going on he may not be able to fill in. You can check out the links in the description boxhe may have posted something there.
I just read that the comet/ whatever, Elenin is 1/6 the size of the sun or bigger ( 200,000 kilometers) .... This is the very latest . Would appreciate some insight from mr. Strong
@themikster2010 The comet Coma is about 200,000 km that is the tenuous atmosphere of gas surrounding the commet. The Suns atmosphere extends out to about 100 AU. The Nucleus - the solid part is tiny
@drkstrong. There is prob at least 1000 perc. More sat, and other space (sensitv.) Equipment than 12 yrs ago during the last S.max. Earth can handle it, been so for mill.yrs.,however everyday in space is new(and the sun)!! I hope she is kind to us....lol
@thesimulacre No it is a mirror effect - the mirror is made of many layers. each reflects with decreasing efficency but if you get something VERY bright there are multiple reflections
Hard to swallow the whole "man-made global warming" tripe when we see the correlation between CMEs and subsequent high temps on Earth. Thank you, Dr. Strong, for your "warm enlightenments".
@ETHIOLOGIST1 Actuallt there is no such correlation. CME's were much rarer in 2010 than in 2005. they are tied for the warmest years on record. 1998 the third warmest wasjust after solar minimum and 2009 which was in the depths of minimum. Where did you get the impression that here is such a corelation?
On a recent vid you asked if there was anything to change. Maybe a bit of drm and bass or dub step as background music. Not that the classical isnt good, would just be funny listening to your voice over it, even in a rap style! Your name suits it too ; )
@TRIPCITY44 Th eacual probelm is that I have a crumby micro phone (microsoft's) which gives and annoyiny rhythmic hiss so I put the music background to drown it out (plus i like the music!)
Hypnotically fasinating images. Whats underneath all that action on the surface makes the Sun so mystical. I presume science has only an assumption of what really goes on.
@TRIPCITY44 No, a new technology was developed abut 30 year sago called helio seismology that measures sound waves on the surface of the Sun and uses them to get a picture of the solar interor, rather like seismographs see the structure of the Earths interior. So we have a pretty good idea of what is happening. The problem is that the resolution is low but some of the processes are small scale - there we have to us models.
@drkstrong Please excuse my ignorance , but, will the Earths magnetosphere protect from the solar radiation? I spend a lot of time outdoors. Should I do inside work for the next couple of days? Thank you. Peace.
@Godtaughtmehow The magnetosphere protects against high energy charged particle. The atmosphere protects both particles and electromagnetic radiation. The bit of the spectrum that we have to worry about is the UV. That can be enhanced for a few minutes at the time of a flare but not by much - the big problem is extended exposure. Use a hugh spf sunscreen (for both UVA & UVB), wear long sleves and trousers and a broad brimmed hat.
I can't wait for your return!!!!!

i been looking at solar flares on youtube 1263 th one 2 negative spots jest got twice as big its grown a tail
wormywelshdude 6 months ago
@wormywelshdude There is no such thing as negative spots - it is an instrumental effect caused by forshortening near the limb of the Sun

Love it! A symphony of light! A ballet of leaping flames...bending, twisting, twirling to the drama that is their brief existence.
Good reporting too! Ha!
