Thank you for this, maestrojimbo. So beautiful, and so full of yearning.
I remember a marvelous "Ah, vous dirai-je maman" on the the Tonight Show - she bounced up and down, hands in pockets - that she performed around the time the studio version was recorded.
Oh, Lord...I think that was better than the original recording or the live performance from 1963 when Douglas Moore looked on. Amazing, gorgeous singing...
@REBECCAtheSOPRANO It's great to hear from a young person that likes Sills - her many recordings just weren't that flattering, esp. the post 1975 ones. The earlier recordings document one of the finest musician/singers of the century (in my opinion). Please visit the many other early recordings (live) on my channel for they are unrivaled.
It's great to have another version of the Willow Song from ones already known. However, Sills did not make her first appearance on Dick Cavett's show until June 23, 1969 (I recorded it with his intro, and she sang "Je suis Titania"). She did appear on Cavett next on Dec. 29, 1969. I wonder if that's the appearance on which she sang this? This acoustic is a little odd though - doesn't sound like a live TV ambiance. She did sing the Willow Song on Camera Three on May 11, 1969. Could that be it?
I copied it off the TV directly and added reverb. Dick Cavett for sure The year is a little fuzzy, but I was at Juilliard those years. This is the best of all the Baby Doe recording I've heard - high notes are so sweet and effortless. Stay tuned for Marten aller Arten next - same show. What's your source?
@maestrojimbo I too recorded Sills on TV in the late 60s-early 70's. She was on many dif. shows (Carson, Cavett, Frost, Griffin, etc.) I didn't mark mine well then, but have used newspaper articles to verify dates & programs. Cavett guests usually only got 1 number per show. On Camera 3 of 5/11/69, she sang Doe, Abduction, Manon and Caesar arias. I only rec. 2, missing Doe & Manon. Your new Abduction upload matches mine from Camera 3. If you have the other 2 arias, it's Camera 3 - & a great find
@infoman111 You must be right - if your Constanza aria matches it must be the same source. Commercial broadcasting probably wouldn't allow longer arias like that. Remember how the arias were sooooo shredded on the Johnny Carson Show? Also, Carson had no idea how to handle her - mostly silly stuff. Too bad. I really admire your sustained passion for Sills over these many years and hope I can help with more in the future.
@infoman111 I looked at your amazing lists and realized that I have several things not posted, but much is on reel-to-reel. I have her New Jersey Aida, Elijah, Traviata w/Kraus,opening night of Lucia (with a temperature of 104!) and many other things. I made a compilation of them and gave it to her after a performance of Norma in Boston.
Hello! You certainly have a fascinating collection. of Sills. I used to hear her a lot in my student days. I'm sorry I cannot verify anything, but my cassette tape is marked Dick Cavett. I do not have the other 2 you mentioned. I remember being irritated with Johnny Carson for the way he handled her - mostly silly things. Her arias were soooo shredded, too. Dick Cavett was more intelligent and let her sing more.
just beautiful. Such sweet high notes.
Thanks for sharing with Us. Lorraine

@tjlan I have it and will probably upload it in the future - trying to get the more "substantial" music first.
