Even if ability has something to do with you position in society, choice does not, and they're two completely different things. Everyone in America does not, incidentally, have adequate or equal access to education; unlike many countries third level education is not free, and no education would be if it were truly capitalist.

I see it in the hospital, where I work: As an ongoing doctor I really like my job, but I get lots of reward. The nurses, especially in intensive care, work as hard, but they get nothing for it. Just like the first couple of years of WW1. FYI, The Civil War was about State's Rights vs strong central government, not slavery. Missouri and Kentucky, both slave states, fought for the Union.

The reasons for the civil war are complex but mostly simply yes the south actually did fight the civil war primarily protect slavery , the north to increase central gov and maintain the union. Socialism means more choices not less. Socialism is based on the promotion of human freedom and choice to its highest possibility; that's one socialist programmes are based. Compare that to capitalism; for all that capitalism progresses on previous forms of society it basically leaves your choices entirely up to luck and a coercively-enforced hierarchy of property- and labour-relations. Personally I think its fairly clear which system is freer.

The new "Global Happiness Index" set up byu the New Economics Foundation ranks the US 150 out of 178 in terms of people's happiness!
In WHO World Health Rankings it comes in 37, this despite there being only 31 other "advanced economies" in the world.
In poverty and inequality measurements (by the UNDP), it comes at the very bottom of a ranking of developed economies.

survey found that the poorest 10% of Americans were poorer than the poorest 10% in every other developed economy (mostly the large European economies) measured.
In education it ranks 18th out of 24 among developed countries.
In terms of social mobility and equal opportunity, another survey again found the US bottom of all developed countries measured.

A powerful military isn't an indicator of freedom; quite the opposite, that's why north korea has the world's largest military relative to its size.
"True democracy", "Trial by peers"; That's an absolute farce. Yes of course America is some form of democracy; but in terms of the oppenness and fairness of its political legal system its the worst in world by fair when compared to other well-established demcracies. Spcialism makes people free by giving them control of their own means of production, emancipating them from capitalist exploitation, guaranteeing them basic rights of work and well-being, providing universal access to (normally) basic things like education, healthcare, basic neutration etc. etc. to give a short answer. Of course it all depends on your meaning of socialism althtough true socialism is democratic.

Your fought YOURSELVES, how to does that count? Half of those 600,000 who died were fighting to keep slavery. Most countries have been able to abolish slavery WITHOUT having a civil war. It true you didn't keep the native americans as slaves, you simply exterminated them.
And yes some of us rather do like socialism of a sort (although I doubt you actually know what socialism really is). Why? Because it makes better and freer countries,oh how stupid of us

No country is perfect. There are still Native amercians, they were not exterminated but the way they were treated was shameful. What country are you from? Yes I know exactly what Socialism but you obviously don't since you seem to think it makes you "freer and better". Socialism is the opposite of freedom. How do you think socialism makes you better and more free? Explain that if you can and try use facts.

The Native Americans were exterminated, admittedly most of the work was done before independence, but it was one of the most useful eliminations of populations. in world history none the less.
No country is perfect but many are better than the united states. To give you just one figure. You said the US is the freeest country in the world. Its actually in the late teens in world rankingsl; behind most Europeans and in the same league as some in S. America Denmark is first last time I saw.

I'm not going to argue the native American point anymore since you seem to think the US is the only country or people to ever have oppressed anyone. Moving along, where are you getting your "World Rankings" from? How are they defining "most free countries?". Let's see, a true free market economy, most powerful military on the planet, strongest economy, low taxes, a true democracy, trial by peers. Land of the free, home of the brave. Again, having government make choices for you is NOT freedom.

I can't give you theworld rankings I was referring to, I remember it was it was in Time Magazine around Septeber 2007. Denmark was 1st, the US somewhere around 18th.
That's actually better than its press freedom ranking; at the latest it ranks 48th in the world in press freedom according to Reporters without Borders.

It's like I've always said. "Unless you are born with a severe mental or physical handicap; where you are in life now is nothing but the sum of all the choices you have made up until now". Capitalism rewards those that have worked hard, taken some risk and chose to invest. Capitalism brings out the small business spirit. Socialism removes the incentive to do the best you can. You are right about our sliding education and some of our discontent. The USA has gotten more liberal unfortunately

Much as what was to be expected you have chosen to ignore the logic of everything i say and persist in the restatement of your previous ideas despite the fact they've been shown to be wrong. As the figures i have given you show; more capitalism is not a good thing, if it were the US would be better off than the rest of the more socialist-influenced world, not less.

Almost nothing in life is actually solely determined by your own atomistic choice; any choices you make are themselves determined by the place in society you're born into. Such individual atonomy as there is in free society generally is restricted by the rigours of capitalism; which determins things according to property and merit which you may be lucky enough to possess. None of that is inhibited if there is more equal distribution of resources too.

A free market economy or low taxes are not a measure of overall freedom for individuals or society, although even according to economic measures alone the US is only about the 5th "freeest" in the world. Nor does it have the strongest economy, as the last few months should tell you. Its actually growing at a lower rate than pretty much every major economy in the world.

WOW, you must have ALOT of free time on your hands. There are alot of holes here, it's hard to know where to begin. Your's and my basic difference is in how we see Capitalism and Socialism. Socialism tries to force everyone to be equal. It believes in "redistribution". Most people who are not well off, are so because of choices they have made. That is a fact. Every citizen in America has access to education. Through education and hard work, anything is possible.

People are not where are because of their choices, they are there mostly because of the position in society to which they were born into because of luck. Even if ability has something to do with you position in society, choice does not, and they're two completely different things. Everyone in America does not, incidentally, have adequate or equal access to education; unlike many countries third level education is not free, and no education would be if it were truly capitalist.

Most are there b/c of the position they were born into, or at most because of the suitability natural abilities to the market. Hardly a v fair measuer"Through education and hard work, anything is possible."Grow up and stop repeating cliches. Anything is possible in that in a properly organised society an infinity of options are open; but not in a capitalist society which is based on a a tyranny of property.
