  • The Monitors made their version first. Also lead singer Richard Street sung with the Temptations before David Ruffin, I like their version best from when I first seen it in the motown review in 65.

  • Great version. i didn't know their was another version BUT The Temptations version has a more emotional attachment to it therefore I prefer the Temps version.

  • The female known as Candy, and her husband Maurice are family.I remember when I was a little girl and their songs would come on the radio. My family and I would lose it! And whenever they were in town they'd comeover to our house. Richard Street who was the lead singer of The Monitors went on to become one of the Temptations and lead one of my favorite songs,HEAVENLY. Thank you for noticing them, and for the memories!

  • The Monitors sing, strongly, and flawlessly. I have never a bad note on any Moniters' tracks. Absolute perfectopm! I LOVE MOTOWN!

  • sounds like a potential cut 4 the spinners instead 4 the monitors!

  • The Monitors' version is MUCH BETTER. The Temptations have a much bigger fan base, and their fans will always prefer their version of a song over whatever other versions are out there, but listening objectively to both versions, I'd have to say that Richard and The Monitors' version . in my opinion , is the better of the two.

  • @williamg2552 ,That is your bottomline.Stop going after The Tempts. It isnt a crime to like The Tempts version better. People prefer what they like, we have ears,The Tempts have a unique sound, with Ruffin's unique voice and The Tempts harmonies make for a perfect match. You picking a version over The Tempts version, no.LOL. Well you do the opposite, you'll choose the other version just because its not the Tempts, but nobody cares. The Tempts are great and you cant change that. Sorry.

  • @williamg2552 ,The Tempts version of What Love Has Joined Together and You Can Depend On Me are argubly better than the Miracles version. But as far as this version the harmonies cant compare to the Tempts version in my opinion, Richard comes close, but David does better in my opinion, but maybe to some Richard does a better job, everyone has their own opinion. Dont be mad because people like The Temptations. Its just the way it is. This version by the Monitors is still exceptional in my opinion

  • Let me make a correction. This is the original version. The monitors made this version first and then the temptations. I'm from Detroit, and I've seen them perform in person this song, and then the temptations came out with their version. This is what you call soul singning.

  • One of my long-time faves also. Superb!

  • @FOURTOPS4EVER It had to be January or February 1966. I had just graduated from High School (they had January graduations back then). I was in College. After classes we'd sometimes go to this house where we'd meet, dance, talk - have fun in general. This always played. Motown had so many stars back then that oftentimes a singer or group shared the same song. The Temps did this as well but I didn't like their version. PEACE

  • Saw them perform this at the Regal Theater in Chicago- they were outta sight - for real. Thanks for the post.

  • Thanks for the comment, now I am very envious !!

  • FIRME

  • Many thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed this classic sound.

  • I have the 45 "Greetings"....nice group!

  • This is a slightly different version that I've never heard from the Monitors. I like it.

  • @eternalywd ,yeah this is a great version, i like the Tempts version better, but I really like this version thought

  • @tuzwol I feel the same way. I really like this version! Both versions play over n over in my head. Same song but they approached it differently. However, David's always a winner wit me--The tempts are a winner with me period! I feel like if I sang this song to a woman, I'd win her over more singin it like D.R. than if I'd sung it like Richard but love the song period!! Great job to both!

  • I thought it was brilliant so I included it on my compilation Soul Satisfaction 2. Listening to it now - it sounds EVEN better lol! Thanks for the post. Jo x

  • Thanks for taking the time to comment Jo. much appreciated, LOVE The Monitors !!!

  • Lovin' it!

  • Many thanks for taking the time to comment, it`s a fantastic vocal with a beat we all LOVE.

  • This is a song the Temptations covered with David Ruffin. Richard Street was/is a great singer and a good replacement for Paul Wiliams, though there is one Paul Williams and he was AWESOME with the Temps.

  • Have to agree with you, Paul Williams was a fantastic vocalist with the Temps. I also feel Richard Street did a great job with both groups, and the vocal on Say You has his class all over it.

  • Is this the group Richard Street (Temptations) was a part of? The guy one of the pictures looks like him.

  • Hi, Yes he left the Monitors to join The Temptations to later replace Paul Williams around `71 . Many thanks for viewing and leaving a comment.

  • the Temptations also did this song on the Getting Ready lp.I love both versions.

  • Thanks for the comment and the info. will check that out ASAP , many thanks. I love the Monitors, probably as they were together for such a short time but produced some great vocal performances.

  • Thanks breadmaker, appreciate the comment, many thanks.

  • awesome

  • Actually , the Monitors were a MOTOWN grou....Not from Philly.

  • Quite right too !!! This is Tamla Motown at its best !!!!!!!!!

  • Good Philly Sound. I love the way the female singer is "styled".
