I've been looking for this song since watching this episode over 20 years ago. Thought it was Bootsy Collins' band all along but it was actually Carla Bley's 2 songs. Duh! A Big Thanks for posting it.
@tybolini2 Your an idiot. Period. When you produce 24 albums ,win 6 Grammys and play on movie scores then let me know. And by the way, who gave you permission to be a critic?
Nothing on television has coveyed the pure joy of music making as vividly as Night Music. The musicians are clearly thrilled by the challenge of melding dispirate styles and genres and their enthusiasm is infectious to anyone with eyes and ears!
Steve Swallow...wonderful tone. Some people dont like his tone. But I like it. Its like a dub tone like when you run an electric through a low pass filter + boss octaver. Its got a lil fuzz to it but its good for solid low end support. Its nice to have a clip of how the Parker bass sounds as well...
The absolute magic of music! Artists from different genres coming together and jamming--this is pure genius. Back in the day before we all were born in the 30's &40's, just imagine--this was the norm in creating good music.
This is about the best thing I've ever seen on 'Tube.
What a treat! 4 bassists! (counting Bootsy :-)
Tom Barney grinning and grooving behind Steve Swallow's lead at ~2:55 is choice! I've never seen a group this big besides a symphony orchestra get so much on the same page and make so much music. Hiram - such a voice, and here a fiery contrast to the Lawns vibe. All this and Bootsy.
See also of course "Carla Bley - Sextet". Thanks for the post!
Friggin great. I watched this the night it aired. What a blast. I cannot thank you enough for youtubing this most excellent jam session. I read up.. and did not know that Hiram Bullock passed. Is this so?
i loved the show. thank you so much for posting. "lawns" is amazing--and as a part of "healing power" is even better. and the solo by bullock, along w his solo on sting's version of little wing, are two of the finest... btw, has anyone found the program when sting played LW on night music?
Wow -- thanks for this. I loved this show! I remember watching this at the time. I thought Sanborn's son, Jonathan, is also there, in the turqouise shirt?
i videotaped (vhs) this piece back in 1989 or 1990 i think and i truly believe that steve swallows bass solo around 2:20 is one of the most moving ive ever heard....not a lot of notes, but it hits just right....
Just thought I'd mention that while this piece is indeed "Healing Power", it starts with an introduction which is another piece by Bley, called "Lawns". It then goes into "Healing Power" around 3:06.

Hiram was always fantastic on this show, but that guitar he's using stinks! Locking nuts and floating trems completely rob you of tone....
