Canada needs an Attack heli, We have to rely on US Air in Afghanistan. We should get some cheap Apaches or AH-1Z. Or maybe the Eurocopter Tiger since we use alot of German vehicles, Anythings better then Griffons with C6 GPMG's to escort our Chinooks. It makes our troops feel better knowing we have atleast ONE Canadian attack helicopter to call on. BTW Go USA.

The USAF does the heavy hauling for the military. My landlord ships out this Sunday for a year in Afghanistan and I can guarantee he'll be going over on a C-17 or C-5. The Navy handles the seagoing segment as well as hitting the coastlines. The Marines and Army do the ass kicking on the ground and the USAF does the long distance, heavy iron dropping as needed along with supplies and such.

There's no real "best." It depends on what mission you want to participate in. The AH-1Z is sexiest to noobs, but people who want it going in may decide that sitting in the most cramped of all cockpits while getting shot at is not for them. They might decide that it's a lot more satisfying to deliver a platoon of Marines into a hot zone so that they can go kick some ass. The opposite is also true. There are also jets. For now, focus on passing OCS, and then TBS. Worry about airframe later.
UH-1 Yanke is a multirole aircraft it carriers rocket a minigun and a .50 cal for attacking and does long range navigation for the ah-1 it is a good choice
This is what makes the USMC great, they either upgrade their existing arsenal themselves or purchase updated versions of the same model rather than spend billions on a new project. (Osprey excluded)

Absolutely. Beats all the overhyped stuff thats come out since. This was genius engineering when the US army was in a jam and really needed it. There is a lack of clarity in roles now with designers claiming to build "all conquering" "capable of doing everything" gear that needs upgrading within a couple of years of entering service.
The new AH1 and UH1 may look the same from the previous generation but performance and capability is now twice as better. Better engine and rotor system, electronics, sensors and weapons. Why build a completely new helicopters when you can make a already proven one and make it better. This will be in the US Marines' inventory for many years to come.
@bittemeinrammstein I was basing my comment on the length of service, performance in combat, and the potential of continued use. The Mi-28N is a new kid on the block. The Mi-24 (Shaitan-Arba , satan's chariot as the Afghan Mujahedin called it) is far too versatile to merely be the kalashnikov. i believe the Russians called it the air tank which somewhat belittles its surprising speed but I understand why they did. Top weapon, too good to be compared to AK in my view, but what do I know!

There is a lack of clarity in roles now with designers claiming to build "all conquering" "capable of doing everything" gear that needs upgrading within a couple of years of entering service.

Great helicopters. Why built a new platform when you can upgrade a proven and successful helicopters. This is good addition to the US Marines! :)

The new AH1 and UH1 may look the same from the previous generation but performance and capability is now twice as better. Better engine and rotor system, electronics, sensors and weapons. Why build a completely new helicopters when you can make a already proven one and make it better. This will be in the US Marines' inventory for many years to come.

Nah, Mi-28N or Mi-24 is kalashnikov of attack helicopter world... AH-1 is more the M-16.

@bittemeinrammstein I was basing my comment on the length of service, performance in combat, and the potential of continued use. The Mi-28N is a new kid on the block. The Mi-24 (Shaitan-Arba , satan's chariot as the Afghan Mujahedin called it) is far too versatile to merely be the kalashnikov. i believe the Russians called it the air tank which somewhat belittles its surprising speed but I understand why they did. Top weapon, too good to be compared to AK in my view, but what do I know!

Does the USMC refer to the UH-1N and the UH-1Y as Hueys just like the classic UH-1s?

They refer to the UH-1s by the official name. The Iroquois.
Of course, the troops (be they soldiers or marines) will always call the aircraft a Huey.

I did not notice the final versions of the UH-1Y and AH-1Z does not use the same type of updated version of the AH-1W's engines and no the panels on the tail plane either I guess those versions must been earlier prototype/test models then with that stuff.
