This movie is not even about an orphan. It is about an insane little person that is masquerading as an orphan. After seeing this movie I see that it is not even plausable. However, I would think little people would have more of a complaint that orphans.
Granted it was a movie but if you notice the similarities between that of problem child (comedy) and a horror movie being Orphan you will notice that there are stigmas that are very similar to that of foster youth. Granted right to some it may be a movie but to others like me and these guys in the video it is rather offensive.
P.S. I am a huge horror buff and I am going to not show support of this movie either.
No people who are adopting are most likely not watching this movie but their friends and family are/can be. The people who see (or have seen) the movie are being subtly influenced by the media to think of foster children in a negative way. Perhaps it isn't noticeable right away but on a subconscious level a person, (even those who have only just seen the commercials) question the issues raised by the movie.
Perhaps a friend of someone who has adopted will ask them when they are having trouble with their "child" is it easy to love them even if their not your own. Or perhaps think that a foster child is in capable of love because they are acting out.
I definitely agree with asian897. Not sure if some of these comments have come from the CCAI interns themselves, but wanted to say I am a CCAI intern from 06. Hope all your internship's are great, and I thought you all did a great job in this video. I will be adding it to my Facebook & Myspace as I have grieved over watching the previews for this movie. I appreciate movies as an art, yet my stomach turns when we desperately need positive portrayals of foster youth, not negative ones.
This movie has become a cheap scapegoat. I don't believe it will change the minds of people who want to adopt. If this movie does ruin adoption for the people who see it, then they weren't ready for a child anyway. It's just a fictional thriller. That would be like saying you won't stay at a motel after seeing the movie vacancy or go to Slovakia after seeing Hostel. It's just a story. Don't protest the movie, just help people realize that it is a work of fiction.
Children watchin an ad "There is something wrong with Esther, Orphan" do not know what fiction means........Is not about the adults is about what it does to orphans in foster care, use you imagination. If you have one.
People. Please hear me out. I have a little sister my family adopted from Korea. I honestly believe adopting her was the best thing my family has ever done and I would like to adopt when I'm older.
I saw the movie and in no way is it a "portrayal" of orphans. It is a fictional piece of work and when the girl says her mother doesn't love her as much as the biological kids, the dad strongly denies it.
I'm sorry you find this is offensive, but it is just a movie and it does not slander orphans.
I think that because you're not adopted yourself, it might be hard to completely understand why some people might get upset. As an adopted person myself, I find the movie IS offensive. Adoption is stll a topic that many people outside the adoption circle don't completely understand. So any negative view towards adoption(like this movie), doesn't help educate the public. It justs reinforces negative sterotypes.
I'm a KAD. Talking for your sister is dangerous. The Adoptee community tends to hate this with an utter passion after 50 years of people talking for us. She might in later years take exception to it. Just for your information.
What Adoptees and others (Such as Foster care children) object to is the constant negative portrayal of adoption and foster care. To us, it's the same as putting a black man calling a white man Master. I can articulate further as a KAD for you why I feel this way.
I understand the arguments here, I was simply stating my opinion as the people in this video stated theirs. asian897 countered my statement very politely, I respect that. That said, I would appreciate not being spoken down to. Thank you.
Warner Bros could have given this movie a diferent name like "Esther" and change it a little but keep the story about an evil child.
They were extremelly irresponsible about their marketing, and the only ones who'll suffer more abuse and bullying as a consequence will be the children who are orphan, adopted and in foster care.
Being an orphan, adopted and in foster care is hard enough foor these children.
They did not need a movie to make it even harder.Very, very sad.
I'm appalled by the movie Orphan, not because i think it can deter people from adopting but because is very well known orphan children get abused a lot in foster homes and sometimes adopted children get abused is their adoptive homes too by parents and siblings.
This movie just gives abusive children and foster and adoptive parents more ammunition to abuse orphans, adopted and children in foster care,Is very sad.
I didn't see the movie but even if I did, I would like to say for the record that I don't see an experience like the one in the movie is indicitive of all orphans and foster children. And, I think anyone who does is stupid. It is one unique situation and it is ficticious.
I strongly disagree with much of this statement. For one, while you may believe that children get abused a lot in foster care, it cannot be "well known" as it is not a fact. Do some children get abused in foster care? Yes, absolutely, and those foster homes are closed down sooner or later. The vast majority of the abuse suffered by foster children, however, occurs in their own homes, not in their foster homes.

all these fucking activists preaching out about this movie, saying that it promotes wrongful views on orphans, are fucking RETARDED! How does a movie condone whether or not a certain person is evil or not? Are you fucking kidding me??? ITS A FICTIONAL! FUCKING! STORY!!!! What does it have to do wit the actual orphans in orphanages? YOU GUYS ARE SO FUCKING ANNOYING, GO CHOKE ON A BOTTLE CAP YOU LAME ASS PIECES OF SHIT
Wow. Calm yourself down, dude. Why do these kids deserve to die just for talking about thier experiences as foster youth??? Just for trying to bring to light a REAL problem faced by the US? Looks like those violent movies have made their mark on you...
I don't hear a call for censorship in this moving little video. What I hear and see is a moving little video assembled by six or seven young people in and around the DC Metro area, articulating their (informed) perspective on the reality of, and value of, foster care. On the other side, I see a multimillion-dollar, media- and ad-driven push to get people to see a horror film on the done-to-death topic of 'bad seed' children.
Telling capital fascism to STFU is a good thing. Go America.
Do we ever say boycott? Or that we want to ban anything? No. We're just educating people about the real horrors. We're providing the other side of the story to counter act the negative connotations that the Orphan movie brings to the forefront. This is a response not a call to ban the movie.
Its a shame that our entertainment driven society constantly thrives from the exploitation of the victimized and glorification of immorality!!! Way to stand for what's right!
but Esther isnt a child......

That does make sense. I apologize if I came off rude. I certainly wasn't going for that. I was thinking about the adult side of the adoption.

OMG itsinthenet, you're 40 and do not understand it?
I guess you know NOTHING about the foster care system, the psychology of being an orphan or anything to do with children.
If the movie doesn't bother you why come here to attack me, the movie does bother me.
Free country, we can all differ in opinions.
grow up hunny, at 40 you should at least know to respect others opinion.

Yes unfortunately is more later than sooner, just the other day a 2 year old boy was left in a coma for the rest of his life by a foster parent.
A lot of the abuse is emotional and verbal so noone can see the scars.
Foster parents are not stupid, they want that gov money.NOT all but is about 50/50,
Just type toddler abused in foster care on google........
