I actually find the dancing in this video to be pretty recognizable when compared to the style from the late 90s to today. It is very clear where today's stylings came from watching this. What shocks me is how night and day this is from the clip from 1979. That was just 4 years before this and yet that style is nothing like this or today's dancing. What the heck happened between '79 and '83 to cause such a tectonic shift in the approach. I'm simply amazed!
I like the modern style WAY better than this. The Samba looks really choppy and they pop their chests the way gymnasts do that looks ugly. The one piece things for the guys takes away from their hips. Anyone agree?
Modern style Latin dancing had to come from somewhere ... and this is where it came from! It may look weird now, but all things start somewhere. I competed as an Amateur during this time and look back with really fond memories! Hated wearing the catsuits tho'!!!
You are absolutely right HoverCorte. That's why I am placing so much of the '90 and '80 and from way before, so that people in this century realize where it all came from. Thanks for your comment;-)
Yes, the men's catsuits seem to disguise the hip movements. I really did not see too much hip movement in the men anyway. During the (early 1980's), the men were just starting to do the hip action, as I remember in competition. Good observation!!You are right about the way (the men) used their chest. They also had alot of shoulder movements and arm swinging in the samba, too.
Sorry don't know, though must admit I knew the title a long time ago. But, the orchestra is the Midland Big Band (Dutch band), maybe checking by them will help finding the title. Good luck!
My teacher is Christiane Primeau (the first couple), SO FUNNY to see her dancing like that!! LOL

My guess is that dancers post 80's from former communist countries changed the look of lnternational Latin dancing.

This how these songs should be danced. Pure. There are a lot of talented dancers today, but way too much posing in the routines.

Oh, beautifull! I like these old videos a lot. It would be nice to see one from the 50's. How the dancing looked back then.
The costumes sre also beautifull, maybe even more beautiful than the costumes today. Nowadays the latin dancers wear almost nothing at all. :p
