  • Octavio Best of the twentieth century, Wunderlich, Mccormack and Kraus get to do that passage as does alva. Any wording can finish the passage, but all the tenors move the diaphragm and so the air escapes them, however it does Alva's why it is that pasajelo slowly and rhythmically. I challenge anyone to tell me otherwise. Long live the best Peruvian tenor of the story.

  • in the description says that maestro Alva is a lyric tenor,in fact to my understanding he is a leggiero tenor, you should specify with more accuracy, correct me if i am wrong.

  • @mandevillesmind so does Peter Anders.

  • @seektheforce and so do many others. IT's meant to be taken in one breath, and while not everyone always succeeds in doing so, most tenors are capable of doing it in one breath. Every day is different though and sometimes they fail to take it in one breath, which in my eyes means they're an experience richer :)

  • @MajorNeirLex I'm told by my voice teacher to breathe after you hold the F for twelve beats, and then on the third beat of the Eb at the end of the 2nd initial melisma. He said I can tie a hand behind my back later :D

  • Nobody does it better. I mean nobody. Technique, tone and voice control. Burrows, Alva, McCormack... this era had several masters and today none. Random life...

  • He has a very beautiful voice of lyrico which I like rather than spinto or dramatico. I am always impressed with his voice and rendition. I hope someone would post his singing 'ideal' and 'sogno' which made me like him when I heard them for the first time over the radio in 1968.

  • ecelent

  • This is a great performance but hasn't convinced me that it is better than John McCormack. Nobody has come near his masterful performance.

  • Genial... simplesmente genial...

  • BRAVO!!!

  • insustituible. pero... ¿cuando respira!!!!?????

  • Please listen to Francisco Araiza great rendition, a Master in Mozart fach.

  • This is a great version but Stuart Burrows beats them all. Burrows even goes into the next phrase after the long run without taking a breath. The man is robotic!!! Alva is no doubt the second best at this aria. Loved it.

  • AMAZING!!

LUIS ALVA, ALEJANDRO GRANDA, ERNESTO PALACIO AND JUAN DIEGO FLOREZ.. ALL PERUVIANS TENORS!! ;)

  • he destroys pavarotti and domingo's renditions of this piece. this is amazing, like watching an olympian nail a difficult performance. bravo

Complimenti, Maestro!

  • DESCRIPTION SAYS LYRIC TO ME AS MOST OF US MAY KNOW TO ME HE IS LEGGIERO TENOR!!!

  • @3:24

The guy holding the torch is like... ah man...how much longer

  • Please tell me your name so I can guy your CD(s). PS. He doesn't take a breath until 2:16, not at 2:11. I don't see much point in witing until 2:21 either. Haven't been able to find a single other version exhibiting this level of control, and that includes McCormack and Domingo!

  • If only the entire world could understand and appreciate this beauty

It's so sad that the immaculate beauty of the human voice is not given its just recognition anymore.

    Mozart is so heavenly

  • Oh how I wish I could find this on DVD!

  • That greatest Bel Canto Tenor that ever lived. I'm swooning...and he looked so very young here.

  • @cincorn I wish more people understood this!

  • @cincorn

yes he is the best! thank you.

  • The tempo scares me. Even more so, his technique scares me. Brilliant.

  • The tempo scares me. Even more so, his technique scares me. Brilliant.

  • Excellent - but also consider John McCormack. And consider that bel canto is pretty nearly dead in the modern operatic world.

  • Fantastic. The best.

  • Meraviglioso!!!!

    Roberto.

  • John McCormack, anyone?

  • @causabon99 Luigi Alva - and then anybody else, IMO

  • wonderful, amazing

  • 1:57-2:15 in one breath!!!

  • Bellisima this rendition was awesome Luis Alva i wish i could listen to your amazing belcanto. We the peruvians are proud of you.

  • Bjoerling was famous for not having to breathe, but Alva is in the same league, and what a divine interpretation! A Mozart singer like no other. I wonder if Alva has retired or if he still is teaching in Milano. If he only knew how desperately we miss him and his wonderful singing...

  • @zgopify

What a beautiful remark.when i am listening to famous modern singers, I always think that it will be great for them to learn how to sing bell canto firm this great maestro.

  • Agreed! And not to heavy either, fantastic! I become frustrated when I hear tenors perform arias like Dalla, Il mio tesoro, or Un'aura amorosa and it is too heavy and dramatic. It's light! Keep it light! Thank you Luigi for your fantastic interpretation, line, and breath management!!! Who can better this? He can be equaled, but never bested!

  • Bravo! I am in awestruck. That was fantastic!

  • Stuart Burrows version of Il mio tesoro is also very fine...and is on YouTube.

  • Bravo maestro Alva ! Lindo fraseo lindos matices ! waoooooooooooo

  • The best rendition of this aria on youtube, and only Mac Cormack matches it.

  • This is along with McCormack's version the best version on youtube. I am a fan of Dermota, but his interpretation pales compared to this fantastic singing. Try Dermota in Korngold.

  • FLAWLESS !!!

  • What many people do not know is that to sing these passages without breathing (like Alva does and most tenors do not) was not "optional" in the baroque, classical and belcanto era. It was a must. If you couldn't, the only thing you could do is to ask the composer for another aria.

  • woooow...i just cant belive the breats suport!!! amaizing!

  • This probably the best rendition I've ever heard of this benchmark Aria.

  • In the 70`s and even later many people still said that Mozart was not for him because he was not a "mozartian singer". For me he has ever been by far the best Ottavio I have ever heard. A master in the control of breath. But if you want to really hear Alva singing without need for breathing for a much longer time, just listen to his aria of the 1st Act of Scarlatti`s La Griselda (Live, Napoli)

  • @f1a6b3 The best Ottavio - and the best Almaviva - and the best Ferrando - and the best Nemorino :)

  • @VivaTenors I love his version of L'elisir d'amore, with Carteri and Panerai. It sounds like a music box! All lovers of bel canto should listen to Alva's "Una furtiva lacrima". Be prepared, it is very different from the voices we are used to in that aria (unless you are used to hear Tito Schipa), but perfectly valid for that time (1832). He sounds wonderful!

  • @VivaTenors ...and also the best Paolino (Il Matrimonio Segreto), the role that made him famous in 1 day!

  • Hear Luigi Alva, Antonella Manotti, Carmen Gonzales, William Matteuzzi in great 1982 perfomance of Joseph Haydn - Carlo Goldoni comedy opera "Lo Speziale"

  • I couldn't agree more! Among his many attributes, I cannot believe this beast's breath support. That long coloratura passage in just one breath! And he didn't even need to take it like some ridiculous gulp. I just don't think anyone can parallel that!

  • I agree. unbelievable...he makes it sound so natural to hold such long lines as IF he was merely speaking them. incredible.

  • @castodivo Bill Withers Ain't No Sunshine (0:55 - 1:18)

  • @castodivo I absolutely agree, I only heard an irish tenor who sang this passage comparably to Alva

  • @castodivo Erm, well, I can sing that coloratura passage in the same way.. actually I don't even have to take a breath as he does at 2:11 and I simply go no until 2:21! It's not a matter of being a beast, just managing well the breath. But I agree with you, it's impressive to the most (they react to my long phrases in the same way!) :-)

  • @taurdur

who are you?You can sing like Alva.Could you please post your performance?so far I have not hear anybody else with this exceptional breath control and beautiful belcanto, including the most famous tenors of our century

  • @MegaBreez Hi, as soon as I have a second to breath ( work permitting I mean ;-) ) I will! Best

  • fabulous.

  • Its good, but I dont listen to this music, its still good and i know that

  • sublime

  • Excelencia sin Par!!!

    Caro Maestro LUIGI ALVA!!!

    Delicia y Maestría!!!

    BRAVO!!!

    BRAVISSIMO!!!

Mil Gracias!!! *Gabba02 * Por Este Bellissimo Video del Recuerdo!!!

  • @laoniricArte1 .....´Luigi Ava su verdadero nombre es Luis Alva y es peruano !!!

  • The camerman should be flogged for pulling away at 1:12 just when he was showing his remarkable technique. Same at 3:02 with that overlay.

  • Peruvian Style

  • insuperabile qualcuno sa se viene dalla scuola garcia come il mio maestro perchè a me hanno insegnato così la stessa scuola he fortuna ho avuto....

  • Perfection! how could human sing so perfectly?

He is blessed by God.Thank you Maestro!

All young soloists need to learn form this remarkable artist, including Mr. Florez.

  • Breathtaking.

  • You can't see him breathe because when he does breathe, he relaxes his diaphragm completely and quickly and uses his intercostal muscles to get fantastic deep breaths whilst keeping his upper ribcage raised and posture very straight. This is good for keeping the singer's voice fresh for hours of stress free singing and gives the opera character a stillness and grandeur needed for DG's heroic status. No one ever looks at your tummy when you sing just at your face and upper chest!

  • im workign on this piece right now and its my first year of college.... definitely okay to sing any year of college.

  • That would depend on the singer, acousticarms611...you may be ready for this; I do not pretend to know. Most singers in their first few years of college, however, are not. It requires a level of breath control that is quite high. It also requires seamless control of the passagio, which is not an easy thing to attain.

  • You're not kidding. So many of these passages hang around an F natural. That is very difficult to do without any kind of break. Breath Breath Breath.

  • amen to that! this song stays up around the passagio alot of the time!

  • Wow!!! He is an alien... it's amazing how he never needs a breath...

  • Very beautiful. I like Don Giovanni and to watch Opera.

  • I also think Luigi Alva is a wonderful model to listen to.

  • I honestly don't think this would be that terrible of a thing to tackle your second year of college. It's more a matter of voice development. My sophamore year I was Tamino, junior year Albert Herring, and senior year Rinuccio. And within those years about 4 other arias on top. I'm now working on my masters at Juilliard- so I did something right. I say if you have the voice, then excersise it- you just have to know the boundaries of your particular voice. And your always polishing the arias.

  • Beautiful. I don't think I've ever heard it sung this easily. And I hate, Hate, HATE this role - it's usually so boring. Hahaha, but here Alva brings the character something, by doing almost nothing! I'm speechless.

  • he is from Peru :)

  • I could just sit here and watch Mr Alva all day!

I don't know what it is about Mr Alva's voice that makes this aria even more tender than it already is.

This was my #MusicMonday choice last night!

I love every note of it.

  • I think Alva i perfect for the role of Don Ottavio. Don Ottavio is the don Giovanni's antagonist, he is his opposite. if Don Giovanni is an inconstant liar, with its deep but agile voice, Don Ottavio is faithful and constant and it has a clear and pure voice, as the Alva's voice. If i was a director Alva was my first chose fort the role.

The other named singers are also excellent, of course, and anyone can choose his favorite, for as him sees like the opera.

  • Incredibile, amazing.

    No effort and natural.

it seems just a "promenade" among the notes and virtuosic performance

  • great tenor , thank you for this posting

  • I posted a few weeks ago about IlBarbiere, where Luigi Alva is amazing.

Having just listened to his Il Mio Tesoro I ask whether anybody has a better recording than I have of John McCormack singing this (in Italian, but with a broad Athlone Irish accent)?

    Well done Gabba02. I'm a newbie.

  • Dear mprocino, I'll try your recommendation of Gosta Winbergh right now if I can find it. Alva was quite good. Have you heard John McCormack sing Il Mio Tesoro?

My favourite Alva is as Lindoro in the Barber.

Please all friends reply; I'm new.

I got this on Gabb02's page (unlikely as it may seem from the name) but had a pointer from mprocino: ttyy to all.

I'm not keen on tenors, just on Alva, I prefer mezzo's and great goddesses.

    Regards,

    Barry

  • One of my favorite tenors!

  • His "Ecco ridente in cielo" is beautifully sung and beautifully enunciated (as always, just listen to the phrase "spunta la bella Aurora" ): is there a video from Covent Garden where he was a regular for about 10 years around 1960 and, so a friend told me, very well-liked by the audience.

    Best thanks to Gabba02

  • Luigi Alva has such a pretty voice. He's

elegant, aristocratic but every inch a good

actor. As a former professional dancer, I

have been taught to hide the effort. Alva does this in spades here. He is obviously

the creme de la creme. I love him. Thank

    you.

  • Bravo!!!!!!!!

  • Outstanding performance!

  • hey eltontheprince post a video of you singing this aria

  • Haha, I don't think you want me to do that.

  • Was this conducted by Alberto Erede, who studied with Felix Weingartner?

  • THE BEST OF THE BEST

  • My voice teacher assigned me this song this semester. I'm a mere sophomore in college. What have I gotten myself into this semester...

  • I can't imagine learning this in your second year of college. Try something easier like the 24 Italian songs and arias. That should take you a couple of years.

  • Comment removed

  • Well, it wasn't exactly my choice. I have a red book that I use and the 2nd book of tenor solos that I use the most. But my voice teacher assigned me two opera arias last year. "Dis Bildnis" and "Il Mio Tesoro" in the spring. The rest he gave me were pretty easier. I think he was trying to get me to learn from doing.

  • Well long ago when I was a voice major my first Mozart was Susanna's aria Deh Vieni from the 4th act of Le Nozze and that wasn't that easy to master. I also got to learn Micaela's aria and Handel's Come Unto Him. But first I had to learn lied and songs before tackling arias. I had a great teacher, God rest her soul. I went on to do a lot of roles in graduate school and community opera. It was a good foundation.

  • The best of the best in this repertoire!!!Bravissimo maestro!!!!!!

  • I have been singing this aria for over a decade and it has never become easy for me....Though many people say I sing it well. So if I could offer some encouragement, dont worry about it being perfect. For all you know Luigi Alva is working very hard, he just knows how to hide it. Or he is a freak and it is easy. Either way this is a hard piece, so just enjoy the genius of Mozart. I will post a video of me singing it so you can hear what I mean.

  • que voz tan pura!!!!!!!

  • Amazing! Alva sings this aria as it is meant to be sung, his breath control is incredible and his tonality so smooth.

  • I love the bluster of this interpretation. "Never fear, Ottavio is here!!!" (or has gone after the bad guy!)

And of course, he's full of crap. He'd still be singing and everything would have passed him by.

    Awesome!

grande eternamente luis alva! siempre elegante y genialmentemusicall!!:D

  • great tenor

  • I totally agree with cantorandopera.

    The best rendition IMHO

  • This is a total WOW! Exceptional beauty of line, clean coloratura, and what a gorgeous voice! But the blow away is the magnificent breath control - is just amazing. And he does a wonderful job in bringing a pretty lame character to life. This is the height of elegance and musicality.

  • the best Don Ottavio ever in my opinion, thanks Luigi!

  • Simply one of the best!

  • I'm so proud i know him!!

    A formidable tenore.

    Hi Luis! ;)

  • I met him when I was studying singing in Milano. Gracious, warm and very down to earth. Happy to talk shop with a student. Still have fond memories, 30 years later.

  • Great, great! Every day another gem.

  • The Best Don Ottavio!

  • Thanks for sharing this clip what a wonderful treasure it is! He is indeed one of the greats and a perfect role for him. I have enojyed his voice for years, but never seen his acting, until now, many thanks!!

  • The best octavio at all times.

  • Luigi Alva was one of the best Don Ottavios, musically and dramatically. It's a difficult part, since Ottavio makes all kinds of worthy and extravagant promises but never actually does very much at all in the way of revenge. If you overplay it, it becomes absurd. The tempo is good too - not too fast. They often used to do it too fast in the old days, probably to make the longer phrases easier to sing!

  • peruano tenia que ser viva el peru

  • I Would like to point out that the comment given by "turquestan" lacks understanding of the complex technicality involving singing! As nature has it, the longer the word, the grater the breath. Therefore singing at a slower tempo requires extra breath particularly in this aria. Just because it looks easy it doesn't mean It is! What Luigi Alva has, is a solid technique!!

  • Actually he's right in a way... in a way scales are easier to sing slower and don't place so much of a demand on control.

  • Do you mean turquestan is right? Please tell me I misundertood!! I dread to think that there is more than one vocally incompetent individual!!

  • There is no need to be insulting. Generally speaking you are obviously correct; longer notes require more breath; however, when singing intricate passages, it is sometimes easier to sing slower. For instance, it is 'easier' in a sense to sing the end crescendo of 'Una furtiva lagrima' (Non Ciedo..) slowly- it requires far more voice control to do it quickly. Listen to Caruso sing the end quickly and you'll see what I mean. Some tenors do it slowly cuz their control isn't as good

  • I hope there's a couple million

Otherwise how could we tell them apart from the good ones!

  • Nice tone, awesome piani, but at such a slow tempo it's a lot easier to sing. And for the acting side of it, a bit lifeless.

  • Técnica increible + voz armoniosa y cálida = Excelente, perfecto. Las dos cosas en un mismo tenor. Y estudio en mi colegio :D La Salle :P

  • beautiful pure tenor sound and incredible breath control - this is truly amazing. Raises goose bumps!!

  • The great old days from the Festival of Aix-en-Provence!

    thank you

  • an excellent performance of this difficult aria; I had not heard Alva before, thank you for posting. Better interpretation imo than some of the really well-known tenors on YT (except McCormack).

  • Don Luis Alva y Talledo; FUE NUMERO UNO EN SU EPOCA

  • He was one of the stalwarts, but am I the only one to hear a lot of off-pitch singing. For instance at :53, a 1:12. Great breath control, however. He sings the notorious phrase in one breath with no trouble 1:57 -- 2:15

  • A thoroughly reliable singer who didn't get involved in the histrionics that are associated with todays so called reigning tenors...Bravo Luigi!!

  • Enorme Mtro. Alva!!! Un enorme cantante y mejor persona aún... eres grande Luchooo!!!

  • This is the single best performance of this often overlooked aria I've ever seen. I can't believe how perfect it is.

  • I could not agree more, I had for an unknown reason snubbed Alva, the two Don Giovanni extracts on You Tube are an absolute marvel. Better than Dermota. The frailty of it (some viewers reported off-pitch moments accurately but diesrespectfully too) makes all the more enjoyable.

  • Increible!!!!!!!!!

  • I've listened to this and most of the other versions that I can find on here, but this performance is awesome. Total control start to finish, live on the stage too. Just magic. Anybody got any more Luigi Alva?

Me gustó.-

  • Bravo Luigi!!!

  • And the right pronunciation is DI ASCIUGAR, there are two separate words, but well, when singing you can take some freedom with details, I guess...

  • d'ascuigar would be the contraction and contractions such as these are widely used today, though i agree there should be some "i" in there, it's still correct in literature/speech

  • I like him, but still have a slight preference for Dermota or Simoneau as Don Ottavio.
