It doesn't sound bad. This is what the drums sound like on wav or flac formats of the song. His drums just sound more compressed. He plays it very well
It's not that he's playing any differently with the mics. It's that his kit was never really tuned perfectly and the mics amplify that. Give him some time, I'm sure he'll get better with time at tuning and EQ'ing/mixing.
