  • can someone please make a video on easy ways to recognize and counter side spin quickly please PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEE

  • @jeffcalloway90 We sell a DVD called Receiving Secrets Revealed on our website that goes into this in detail. Take a look on our website for more information.

  • Is there a equivalent stroke on the backhand.. i am trying to learn it but cant find any videos.

  • @kevinqew We don't have a video on this yet but the principle is the same. If you brush the ball on the side you will generate the sidespin.

  • Comment removed

  • I need help, i can do the topspin fine and they are really spinny, but people keep returning them back for some reason, i will hit the ball my hardest and it will still come back, is my rubber too slow? i will do my fastest loop and it comesback. how do i prevent this?

  • @Sk8ingGuitarplayer Try thinking about your placement. If you play the ball out wide or into their middle you may get a different result. If you can play the topspin very consistently then you could consider getting a faster rubber. If you want a more detailed answer try using the ask the coach section of our website. There's more room there to answer your questions.

  • @pingskills ill try placement more often. and i use geospin tackyu and gambler reflectoid. and do u think they are too slow?

  • @Sk8ingGuitarplayer I haven't used those myself. If you want to ask a question about this on our website we can open it up to our readers and they can give you their thoughts. Just go to the ask the coach section and you can submit a question.

  • I have been playing table tennis for like 10 year, training and competitons, but never heard anyone say this and explaning it to me, Thanks!

  • i like your channel but most of your tutorials are for shakehand grip and i use penhold..

  • @narutosaenz Thanks. Yes most of our lessons are for the shakehand grip. However most of the principles are the same for both grips so you should still be able to take a lot out of each lesson.

  • every time i hit like that it just fly s to the side i hit it before it even hits the other side

  • Thanks! This rlly helped me. Now i can topspin soooo good

  • @wefly2high Great! Make sure you take a look at our website too. We've got heaps more advice and tips to help you improve even more.

  • Hey rossilio, im playing on a Competition this Friday so can u tell me some tips ? :o

  • @tekil4ence Checkout the PingSkills website. In particular look at our Ask the Coach questions under Match Strategy. You'll find heaps of great information there to help you out. Good luck!

  • thanks god that youre a lefty :D

  • @Vietnampenner Lefties rule :)

  • how am I going to block it?

  • @Thebubblegum07 Good question. Basically you would alter you normal block a little bit to counter the sidespin.

  • OOOOOOO HOW I LOVE THAT ENDING !!!!!! IS SO COOOOOOLLLL !!!!!!

  • Great post pingskills! I've been trying to work on my "hook" loop for a while now and this video makes it really easy to understand where I was going wrong.

  • Could you all go over Wang Liqin's inside out forehand? This is a great shot to learn.

  • @iandemagi It sure is a great shot. Basically he is just taking the principles mentioned here and executing them extremely well!

  • is this done the same way with penhold grip?

  • @byronsrock4 The basic principles are the same. If you hit the ball on the side you will generate some sidespin and get the ball to curve.

  • @pingskills I wanted to know which company is best in india....?

    Stiga, Stag, Or Butterfly...??

  • @rishabgrwl1 They are all good companies. It really is a personal choice.

  • @pingskills hey man i´m checking all of your videos again... very nice... i saw the one of the tournament very impresive as always... see ya... btw thanks to your videos i´ve managed to master the forehand smash which is very usefull

  • @2020895 Thanks. I'm glad you're finding them useful. The forehand smash is a nice shot to have. :)

  • someone at my club can do this straight behind the net after hitting a backhand its like impossible to play against him.

  • @pingskills hey, thanks for the video! It is really helpful :-)

Could you please tell me whether the position of the index finger on the bat really matters for the power or spin generated??

  • I wish to divide the instructions into 2 parts. First part is how to hold under varying situations and you have done fine and I regained what I learnt long long ago, but the 2nd part that is missing in the instructions is at what point of the ball's profile should we hammer. I had to stop and see at various points of the ball's path to locate it. Can you please help us with that 2nd part

  • 1:12 headshot

  • great pingskills.thats great

  • @narayannir Glad you liked it.

  • @pingskills,everyone will like this kind of useful videos.

And can u plzz give me some idea for a side-top spin(wat should be the bat angle)

  • @pingskills hi, thanks a lot for this video! Its really helpful :-)

Could you please tell me whether the position (horizontal or perpendicular) of the index finger on the bat affects the game??

  • really useful lessons!thanks pingskills!

    :)

  • @mavetopgear You're welcome.

  • I need help, to hook loop it I need to hit the ball on the side, but if I try it doesn't go forward? How can I get it to go forward with that motion? Am I hitting it all on the side, or partly on the front as well, I need some good detail about the angle of the shot and to understand it?

    Thanks :D

  • can this be done with the backhand?

  • @yobmas722 Sure, you just need to hit the ball a little bit on the side to generate the sidespin.

  • @yobmas722 Yeah, so like ping skills said angle the bat more at an angle, so the tip of the bat is facing more towards yourself.

  • i'm subscribing!! :) Nice tips!!

  • @asadullahbutt911 Thanks!

  • @pingskills LOL man it'd been a month or two that a TT was introduced in our school. In a month i was ruling the school with my shots!! But since a week some juniors were causing really trouble. As i couldn't return their (even slow paced) shots!! What i found in this video was, I was not pondering upon my shoulder movement!! Watched your video, and i'm ruling the school again!! :) cheeeeeeeeeeers!!

  • @asadullahbutt911 Great to hear. Keep up the good work!

  • Thanks Ping Skill, this is the first time that I can see how different side spins can be generated. This has been puzzling me all these years playing TT. Well, Time for the practice! Thanks again. :)

  • how do you make a sidespin with the penhold grip?

  • @gulligagardinen The principles are the same. The main thing you need to do is contact the ball on the side, this is what generates the sidespin.

  • @gulligagardinen You do the same, except I think the penhold grip would be more effective because it allows more wrist movement, so more spin. I would do that grip except it hurts my hand, and its not very good at backhand - and I need all the help with my backhand.

  • Il joue quand meme super haut

  • Woah ur a left handed/...........

    ./!!........

  • @stevent95 Alois certainly is a left handed player.

  • pingskills,

Also by using side spin you actually change (decrease) the mount of topspin on the ball. If you can vary the axis of the spin then your opponent will have a difficult time returning the ball because he has to guess how much topspin is or is not on the ball. Works very well on choppers and blockers -if they read a ball that has more sidespin as a ball having mostly top spin it goes into the net. On the other hand, if they read your shot as having more sidespin the ball goes long!

  • @iandemagi Excellent points. Cheers!

  • how do u return a smash?

  • @Dreamingrosegirl Take a look on the lessons on our website and check out the lob. This explains how to return a smash.

  • What's the best way to practice this by yourself?

  • @europeanbamf This is going to be very hard to practice by yourself. You could try some shadow play which is where you practice the stroke without a ball and just swing as you would if you were actually hitting a ball. Because of the sidespin you can't really play this shot up against a wall.

  • Wow your epic at hitting, youd be hard to block, expecially if u played serious :P

  • @pokeywoop Thanks!

  • Can you put PURE SIDESPIN on the ball using your forehand?

  • @2012wyvern You can, but having some topspin on the ball helps it to dip and makes it easier to hit the ball on the table.

  • @pingskills Thanks, I now see the need.

  • love ...

  • I find it hard to return sever from a tomohawk sever can you suggest anything please

  • @ashlincs15 Try posting this question on the Ask the Coach section of our website. We have more room there to answer and your questions get stored with your free account so you can look back over your questions whenever you like.

  • Can you tell me how you get sidespin + topspin for pen hold grip? Or make a video on it? I cannot find it anywhere!

    Thank you!

  • @clowncensis The principles are the same for penhold, you need to hit the ball on the side to generate the sidespin. It really is all about the angle of your racket when you hit the ball.

  • Thumbs up, If you think if the ball turns white then orange

  • thanks, great tut, keep giving tips, cause i suck at table tennis:P, but i love it !

  • Great videos!

  • i practiced it for almost 2hours..

  • They are paddles o-o not rackets..

  • holy ,other of ping. you can add some serious spin

  • Comment removed

  • do you keep your wrist in the appropriate position? or do you rotate the wrist during the forehand motion?

  • Hi,

Keep the wrist in position during the stroke. It is very difficult to move the wrist at exactly the right time to generate the sidespin and this would make the stroke very inconsistent. By keeping the wrist in position as you swing through the ball you can generate the sidespin required and the stroke will be more consistent.

  • If you've got any questions then be sure to visit our website where you can ask the Olympic coach any Table Tennis related questions.

  • He looks like the black version of that Australian comedian. The one in kath and kim.

  • The video "Sidespin Backhand Topspin" is missing. I'm waiting ;-)

  • forehand topspin and backhand topspin sounds the same to me. different strokes but will give you the same result IMO. it's because, it's both topspin.

  • i use this all the time now and my opponents find it harder to block than regular topspin thankz alot

  • well... this is the first time i have seen the "fade-away" spin... why not just use a backhand spin??... that way you don't leave the forehand half of the table unguarded

  • great videos

  • Excellent coaching. Thanks for the video guys!

  • ow! ... ya hit me right in the eye man!

  • his shot bounds sharply after hitting the surface of the table. good shot!!

  • hey thanks, but its a bit hard to learn if your a left hander =S

  • I agree, it's hard with a left hander.

  • Not actually. For a right hander, it's just like watching yourself in a mirror.

  • I think he needs some shorter shorts....

  • This is a really nice video! Thankyou. :)

  • i have 2 of my own little tech on sidespin.

    1. instead of doing a str8 topspin stroke i bring my bat across a bit if ya no wat i mean.

    2. this 1 is a bit 2 hard 2 discribe i have shown ppl how 2 do this but they cant its an awkward shot. i bend my wrist but instead of going down i bring my bat str8 across there is sooo much spin but u should only use it 4 a sneaky attack.

if it doesnt work just stop trying. =D

  • i g0t a t1p for u! if u st0p talkin like dis it becomes alot easier to explain!

  • it takes less time 2 type out

it isnt that hard 2 read

  • actually it would take longer to type if you are hitting numbers rather than letters. maybe you should go back to junior high and take keyboarding A.

  • it isnt a big deal i type da way i want

    we are argueing over nothing

so people stop replyin 2 my comments

  • well i was just correcting you because you said it takes less time two type out, when it doesnt. just wanted you to know that you are wrong.

  • no offence

i dont care so stop replying to my comments. unless you are going to say somthing positve.

  • Let rephrase what he was saying in a more mature fashion. When you are trying to explain something, try to write clearly and keep to short, straight-to-the-point sentences. Your second point contains two awfully written sentences. People always say, "ah, who cares?" but that is the problem. No one takes pride in their writing and, therefore, no-one gets anyone is talking about. Read your own post as if you don't know how to play the shot you are describing; you will still not get it.

  • ur a fucking douche

  • speak for yourself u twat

  • i was just trying to help you by recommending for yourself to go back and take keyboarding A, and perhaps maybe even 3rd grade english.

  • junkie mate.

  • your a douche

  • and your a proper full on spaz!

  • dude i got 1 problem when im doing forhand top spin i cant make, cuz my hand doesnt going up... and im training about 2 months and i still cant do that ffs i want that, i watched all videos but all my balls from forhand are clear...):

  • how do we counter or block a sidespin forehand topspin?

  • i have 1 question man does the side top spin works for backspin 2?

  • i can do topspin and backspin and block it

  • Chuthiyass

I can do side spin using my legs .

  • then you shouldn't be a table tennis player lmao :p

  • paste to 2 other videos

go to your channel and see your comment

  • wow dude nice tutorial im training 2 years and im still learning spin its really hard :S thx for post

  • can u give me some pointers how u swing it. the angle and everyting.. thanx

  • The best way is to take a look at the video. Try to picture yourself playing the stroke.

With the comments on YouTube we are limited to a set number of characters. For a more detailed response ask a question using the Ask the Coach section of our website.

  • any penholder tips for sidespin forehand?

  • awesome video you guys really helped me alot

  • great video

  • at 1:09 (when you make it curve away from you), is that also called an "inside-out forehand" ?

  • Yes, this can also be referred to as an inside-out forehand.

  • what bat and rubbers do you recommend me for playing offense? I'm going to enter in a club so I need good stuff.

    cheers

  • can this be done using bakchand?

  • yes but not with a pen grip its much harder though.. and is really so inconsistent people hardly use it since the forhand is obviously much stronger.

  • great video thanks

  • is this the same principle for a forehand loop? (when dropping the hand) Do you have a lesson for back hand loop? thanks!

  • Yes, I'm assuming.

Yea, I've been looking for a back-hand loop video as well...when they say topspin in the title of their vids, do you think they mean looping???

  • Yes, these topspin strokes are also known as loops.

  • do you always wait for the ball to drop before you hit it for sidespin? idk i hit it at pinnacle

  • To impart sidespin you can hit the ball at any time from right off the bounce to the top of the bounce or after it has dropped. The important thing is to hit the ball on the side to generate the sidespin.

  • Do you have any suggestions on doing a fade shot for penhold? I think the position for holding the bat up is quite strange for that.

  • can you give a lesson about this with backhand pls?

  • HATEbeersnobs your an idiot, he shows you sidespin topspin, when he hits the ball it's spinning you can see the ball has topspin, evidence of this is the dip of the ball over the net, and evidence of the sidespin along with the topspin is the way the ball curves away from to the players right in the air.

  • can i ask something...when the person sidespin topspin me...i shud sidespin topspin back to him??

  • impossible

no such thing as sidespin topspin?

there's either sidespin or topspin no in between lol

  • Say you are playing a lefty and he hits a forehand sidespin topspin at you, thus have the ball go from your right to your left. Assuming you get into position for your forehand and cancel out his sidespin, his topspin would make an attempted chop more likely to go off your paddle behind you. Either that or go back at him with a killer backspin. Idk, whatever your opponent seems to have problems with, do that.

  • i feel i am very good at puttin sidespin on the ball but in the rally i have some issues on conrtol any advice? also what rubbers would u reccomend for more spin (donic preferably)

  • Sorry, the simple advice is to practice a lot. The sidespin forehand topspin is naturally going to be a less consistent shot than the straight topspin. Because there is less topspin, the ball won't dip as much.

As for rubbers, I haven't used any of the Donic rubbers so can't really help you out.

If you have any other questions then try out the Ask the Coach section of our website.

  • if i practise in tight spaces playing against someone, will that help me get better ?

  • Not really. It might actually limit the strokes you can play. If you can I would recommend practising in a regular sized court.

  • All i go to say is Alois & Jeff are AWESOME!

    GO AUSSIE Table Tennis!!!!!!!!

  • If you were to recommend a paddle with a lot of control for under $50 what would you recommend?

  • "SeeMiller North Amercian Series"

    Butterfly paddle is phenomenal !

    US price = 29.99

BUT stay away from the Brian Pace paddle in that series

    IT HAS ZERO CONTROL!

  • Butterfly Senshu is right about $50. It does lack in "push" ability to some extent, but anything else it is great!

  • ok but thanks I'll try it!

  • I've been having problems with this, everytime I tend to side spin it, it harly turns even if I put a lot of effort into it!

    Any tips?

  • Try posting a question to our Ask the Coach section of our website, as we check there often.

To get the ball to turn you need to impart a lot of spin on the ball. For this you need to have a decent bat with a decent rubber that can grip the ball. Then you need to use a brushing contact and a fast contact to generate the spin. By changing the angle of your bat using your wrist you can vary the amount of sidespin. I'm quickly running out of characters so give our Ask the Coach a try next time.

  • HELP i just bought a paddle BUT it seems to have too much "kick" meaning everytime i hit the ball it flys way too outta control!

is this due to the thick sponge layer

    it's pretty thick!

  • AWESOME! i always wanted to place the ball

on the upper edges of the opponents side

This will surely make that agressive " no move" back YOU up player think twice about

    hoggin the table!

Thank you Ping Skills i might now be able to defeat the current JERK whom holds the Ping Pong title @ my college

    He's such an ahole! lol

  • wat if the opponent hit to my backhan side??

  • so the sidespin is mixed??with topspin?

  • Correct, the ball has a combination of topspin and sidespin. The more sidespin you impart the less topspin you will get.

  • How can these shots be linked to a smash?

  • You would generally play a smash to a higher ball.

  • another great video pingskills 5 stars!

    amazing shot at 1:13

  • when i try to get a lot of spin on my forehand i either swipe the paddle up too much or swing too flat. how do i get it just in between and what is a good way to practice it

  • When you finish a mega uber ultra topspin shot your bat should be like hitting your head nearly.

Practice so that it's not a normal topspin shot which would allow you to finish with your bat over your opposite shoulder.

And also commit as if you really want that ball to actually hit the table and the spin would actually make it not bounce and roll on their side of the table (yes clearly impossible) xD.

  • Excellent video...

The trainer here talkes like we know what table tennis is and not like we are retards (like some other video trainers)...

4/5 very good probably gonna try try it at a cup today...

  • i think side spin is easier than topspin

  • A lot of left handers tend to have a natural hook. Are you left handed?

  • im not a lefty but i try to train both hands, n i found it strange that it was easier to hook with my left!

  • in lefthanders topspin it always a little bit sidespin... :) good for me

  • amazing spin would love to be able to get that inside out forehand.

  • great video, love the way how every video is so detailed and explained so clearly that even a begginer can master this stuff

  • why you play with the black side

    ?
