  • Why is St Augustine French? Fort Caroline (a bit further north) was french, but St Augustine was a spanish colony founded around 1565. And I have never heard of a french occupation time?

  • they need a new game for the ps3

    dude your channel rules

  • "Plow into enemy ships and engage in fisticuffs" Ah, getting historical here. Afaik people didn't really were fond of cannon based combat before the Spanish got roflstomped by the English Queen. When was that ? 1570's or so? I believe someone graduated like you has much more say in things like that.

  • @Xerdocreisson 1588. The Spanish Armada got roflpwned due to a smorgasbord of largely self-inflicted factors, including their poor cannon design. You are right, though, that cannons only started to become popular on cannons maybe fifteen, twenty years prior.

  • @Xerdocreisson Elizabeth didn't ROFLstomp the Spanish Armada so much as she attributed their largely humiliating loss (suffered mostly due to many 'natural' causes and in part due to Elizabeth's naval tactics) to divine providence; obviously the storm that sieged the Spanish on their journey and arrival to England was not an ordinary one, but the work of a Protestant God.

    And people bought it.

    God, I love her...

  • @Elryze Wait. Wasn't Lizzie catholic?

  • All console games seem to be written for 13 year old, so you need cutesy cartoon type graphics! They still do it today, when the average console gamer is 28! What's up with that? Just don't understand why all console games are sumbed down when there are console gamers reaching 30!

  • I had this game on the Amiga CD32, definitely one of the best games of all time.

  • wait why is the dutch flag red, white, green as it's seposed to be red, white and blue?

  • @earganon The flag used in the game is incorrect, but keep in mind that flags can change over the course of history. In this case, the folks who translated the game to the Sega Genesis must have gotten their flags wrong; the Dutch Republic used either the Prinsenvlag (orange-white-blue) or the Dutch Republic Lion. At any rate, this game does Do It Wrong.

  • Droning verbosity for the win!

  • Dammit Grim. Now I have to reinstall Pirates.

  • Should have named yourself Reapér. Would fit more. Oh stereotypes, how would the world be without ye...

  • @Scarlex680 If only the game allowed for accented letters!

  • grimith reaper lol

  • So, the impact of age won't be major then Grim?

  • you have a small Pinnace

  • Oh snap! I didn't see this version coming.

    Well played, Grimbeard, well played!

  • So, G-Man. You want to be a pirate, eh? You look more like a flooring inspector! ಠ‿ಠ

  • 6:15 A DoctAAARRRR.

7:34 Holy crap a drag queen pirate. He's completed the Ten Pirate Beauty Rituals and become the Prettiest Pirate Who Ever Lived.

  • @BoboTheVulture A considerable number of Spanish captains have undergone the same treatment. I had no idea that style was all the rage in the Spanish Main.

  • It won't come up in this version, but the original Sid Meier Pirates! on Amiga and DOS had an amusing bit of copy protection where they'd ask about some seafaring fact, and if you get the question wrong the crew just laughs at you being an idiot captain but is still desperate for one anyway.

  • This is a great game, I remember renting it a few times as a kid, but I don't think I ever played it on any of the higher difficulties. It'll be interesting to see if you try for all ten pirate quests.

  • GRIMITH DOES WHAT HE WANTS BECUASE A PRIATE IS FREE HE IS A PRIATE!

  • why does everyone in this game a bloddy pimp

  • wow grimith on the nostalgia train. you play all the children game i played

  • *Hears Music, Eyes Widen* Man, I have to admit the flood of memories that came at me when I heard the opening chords to the game were astounding. Pirates! Gold is one of the very few games I owned for the Sega Genesis but it was assuredly the most played. It's the only game that, on occasion, will cause me to actually break out my Sega Genesis, hook it up to my television, and proceed to play with no questions asked. Own the remake on Steam but it isn't the same. :( Good luck and happy hunting!

  • did you see the cloud at 8:44?? It looks like a pig or something :D

  • Great pick Grim.

  • Down here like you said we say august-ine

  • Oh God, why is everyone suddenly turned into Fabio? This is a nightmare!

  • @UnclePutte You cannot resist! The power of Fabio compels you!

  • @UnclePutte Big buttery slabs of Fabio!

  • @PlumpHelmetPunk I can't believe it's not Fabio!

    ...wait a second...

  • 06:48 Nope, "Reaper" is derived from the Old English "Repan", meaning ""to cut or harvest". So it actually could be an accurate name for an English captain.

  • Did Sid Meiers basically update this game for his Pirates! game because this seems to share man features such as skills, weapons etc?

  • @HaldorZX As I noted in the intro, MicroProse released "Pirates! Gold" in 1993 as an improvement to the original "Sid Meier's Pirates!" To my knowledge, though, Sid Meier himself was not involved in the design or programming of any aspect in this game. He was just inspiration.

  • @GrimithR Did you ever try out the 2004 remake of Pirates? I liked it a lot, brought back some memories since I used to play the game soooooo much as a kid.

  • Damn GrimitH, You always pick the best games :)

  • Oh and last but not least, most pirates wore an eyepatch not to cover their eyehole but to have an eye that was adapted to the darkness, so that they could switch the eyepatch to the other eye and fight in darkness more effectively at any time.

  • @MrBritishGamer Yeah, and also used batarangs, wore capes and called themselves "ninjarates".

  • @MrBritishGamer "Most pirates"? To my knowledge, there is no recorded historical precedent of sailors wearing eyepatches to preserve night vision in one eye, so your claim is unsubstantiated. Is it plausible? Certainly, but your statement is flawed.

  • @GrimithR Mythbusters disproved that claim anyway. XD

  • @MrBritishGamer do you recall where you heard this historical trivia? I have to agree with Grimith; there's no historical or even physical evidence to suggest this claim. It sounds like the "carrots improve night vision" wive's tale that emerged after WW2. It was actually a myth propagated by British officials crediting their pilots' success against German air raids to their diets of carrots; in fact it was their improved radar. But the story remained and people believe it to this day.

  • @gnomechomskylives not off the top of my head no.

But I have seen it since on Mythbusters, so it was quite probably a myth.

Just an fyi though, it's totally confirmed! ^^

  • @MrBritishGamer Yeah I found the Mythbusters clip on Youtube. Though remember they only proved that it was possible, not that it was actually employed by real pirates. My gut tells me that this is one of those "too good to be true" tales. I'd be more inclined to believe it if there were more evidence or eyewitness (no pun intended) accounts of such a use for covering the eyes.

  • @13:15 Cool Captain's Cabin.

    @14:45 Promising Grim Reaper £_+

  • Also, the cutlass was a favourite because you could swing it in the close quarters of the deck, where you wouldnt be able to swing a longsword for example.

    Just fyi

  • @MrBritishGamer Don't erroneously discount the lack of training required to wield a cutlass versus a finesse weapon such as the rapier.

  • French corsair huh?

Cant wait for SKS' reaction to this xP

There will be much yelling of the word "DRAAAAKKKKEEE" I feel.

  • @1:24 This should be child's play for you then Long John Grimsy £_+

  • 9:14 - Is it just me, or does your captain seem to be sporting a Trollface? Problem, Spain?

  • @ScreamingDoom At 9:14? That's the merchant.

  • Hooray! This should prove to be an awesome LGWI.

  • 80 years war for sure ^^ yay this LP!

  • 3:06 0_o? Really?

  • You, Sir, are God!

  • Sweet, this is one of the great games of my childhood!

  • Why is the dutch flag is the hungarian flag ???

  • @MrSandTrooper I presume the folks who ported the game to the Sega Genesis just made an error; if memory serves, the computerized versions of the game use the Dutch Republic Lion, which I think is accurate since the Dutch in this game are supposed to hail from the Dutch Republic. At the very least, they should have used the orange-white-blue flag.

  • Oh yeah plump! I'm pumped for this LGWI Adventure ! MONEYY!!! BOOOOZE!

  • This is my favorite version of Pirates! since it's also the one I was raised on. You play all my favorite Genesis games.

    Down the with the Spanish!

  • @PlumpHelmetPunk I'm interested in knowing why you elected to LP the Pirates! remake instead of this game. Was it just the additional features providing a more interesting narrative for you to make?

  • @GrimithR I think the remake has better gameplay (except for swordfighting which is too cinematic) and a better "main quest" to follow along. My biggest complaint with the remake is the simple fact you can never get rid of Raymondo.

The Genesis version has the nostalgia appealing graphics and music that I love though and the gameplay is still awesome.
