Maybe not in 10 years and maybe not in 20, but sooner or later there will be a time when all SID chips are lost, broken, etc. Then you will be happy to have emulation. So we need to build and improve emulations now, while we can still compare them with the real thing.
Couldn't find a forum for it, so I'm posting here: I've been using it for a bit and the emulation sounds way off on timing. I don't know if it's not cycle exact or what, but take some newer tunes like Jeff's Hyperzapper and the drums sound wrong, no hard punch like they should be, but soft and slow. It does not sound like a filter, but a timing issue.
Another issue is that the pitch control resets to zero when you let go of the slider. Why? It was one of my favourite features of Sidplay 3.4.
We are not talking necessarily about emulation software here, and you did not mention that your talk was limited to 'here', also you did not even mention emulation. Your exact sentense is "The best sidplayer out there for any platform!".. which means that no other player can match it, and it could be translated as that you think emulation is better than the real thing..HardSID rocks, and Acid64 is the best player for modern computers anyway. This might be best for mac though.
Well, just open your eyes :-) And have a look at the SIDPLAY4 window. The SIDPLAY4 user interface is years (!) ahead of Acid64 2.1 - which is a great piece of software too, no question about that. And course, SIDPLAY4 is the best. In my opinion. Man, you are taking this far too serious. Relax ;-)
for ANY platform? Even the C64? What about using HardSID with a PC? Hmm? I think Acid64 is the best SIDplayer for PC, and for C64 I only have used one. Still, I wish people would think even a bit before they talk/type.
Well, I think for the original C64 you actually really don´t need SID emulation. We are talking about emulation/player software here. By the way, you can also use HardSID with SIDPLAY3 for the Mac. So, let me be a little more specific:
Since most Sidplayers (on all platforms) use similar (or even exact the same) SID emulation engines anyway, SIDPLAY4 in my opinion is the best, because of it´s great user interface, it´s unique HVSC integration and search abilities.
Btw, how is it's HVSC 'integration' unique? I think you are over-hyping it a bit. Besides, playing SIDs doesn't mean using emulation necessarily, and those who do, do not even understand what they are missing not playing them with a real SID chip. No emulation can ever compete with the real thing. Besides, not all emulation engines are the same, or even similar to each other; I have experienced very different variations - there are more than just one good player/interface for playing the .sids.
In any case, my reply wasn't meant to be a debate about which player is best or even good, but more a viewpoint to sentence and how ironically thoughtless it is.. just pointing out, that the generalization 'any platform' is false, and shows that perhaps you either didn't think it through or didn't realize there are other platforms with better players - in any case, you'd be spewing false over-generalizations and I was just wanting to guide your attention to this action of yours.
How nice to put that -1 to my comment btw.. so you are not very good at accepting honest neutral criticism and responsibility of your own words? Have some backbone, man! Also, how many thumbs do you actually have? There is a huge amount of SIDplayers, and I don't think this is anything special. I have seen distortion emulation years before this one, and it's still EMULATION, so by definition, it can't be the best. Only when real SID chip is involved, can the word 'best' apply.

The aspect ratio of this video could use some tweaking. Is the SIDPLAY 4 only for Mac?
gamorbab 3 years ago
Yes, it is Mac only and uses a lot of new features of OS X 10.5.

That distortion emu ROCKS!

All thumbs up :-)
