  • Ha Ha - well spotted !

  • Joni was already showing her fascination with open guitar tunings. She is a superb guitarist, by the way.

  • That the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were fair

  • I wonder how Dave Van Ronk made it to Winnipeg. According to his Wikipedia page he refused to get on a plane. /watch?v=H3z7NxFbZzA

  • I want to see the Tom and Harry Chapin segment. Please.

  • One of the best Joni Mitchell songs EVER!!! x

  • Never saw this one -- but wait-- is Joni pregnant here?

  • @downthestreetteam They all want to shag her thas why.

  • Ugh. Why can't I 'like' this more than once?

  • Hippies never die, they simply get uploaded on youtube.

  • Thanks for posting this it's really great ! I Love Joni , her art and music . I've seen her in concert and watched several docunmentaries of her ... but never knew she was originally ; Joni Anderson !

  • I can see where the movie A Mighty Wind got its inspiration, though apart from Michael McKean, none of the principals were Canadian.

  • She's 21 or 22 here! Wow.

  • Beautiful Lady, in so many ways

  • Harry Chapin. Wow

  • In case y'all don't know, there is a video here on You Tube that shows Joni and her daughter that she gave up for adoption reuniting. Its a beautiful video. Now Joni has her daughter and grandkids together. Y'all need to check it out.

  • INCREDIBLE to see her on the cusp of an unimaginable career!

  • WOW!

  • wow

  • a really intersting archive ...thanks for the clip

  • I wanna see more of Dave Ron Von!!!!

  • Highway theme even back then. How many Joni songs reference the road and traveling.

  • @heneksja I guess if you're born in Canada, the 'urge for going' is pretty strong

  • Damn she is beautiful in all dimensions.

  • what happened to the volume?

  • Beauty!

  • IMO the folk seems like it was a tightly wound scene and I can understand why talents like dylan and mitchell split from it.

  • All these years as a FAN of Joni Mitchell--I've spent the last 3 hrs gettin' to know Joan (Joni) Anderson----I neeeeeveeer knew!!!! Thanx, Hank---ya've Made my Day!!!! =D

  • The greatness is allready there...

  • she had awesome talent and an awesome head.

  • She was really beautiful.

  • Breathtaking...

  • @Sincopare The really cool thing is that on the same stage was Harry Chapin and his brothers, Steve and Tom!!!

  • @georgeklimes don't forget Dave Van Ronk....

  • @georgeklimes

Jim Chapin the drummer, is Harry's father (author of many well written drumming instructional books.)

  • Guy at 0:19 looks like a hipster haha

  • Joni,You make my millennium!

    <3

  • Goodness a sweet 22 year old and only 10 years away from writing one of my favourite albums 'Hissing of Summer Lawns' What a talent.

  • i love her

  • I'm an Irish Canadian. I raised my children there. If there was any person who would tilt my total allegiance to Canada; it is she.

  • Grounded and angelic. Both sides are always present, in the presence of her. She's always been wise, it seems.

  • She always had such an amazing gift for song-writing. Her lyrics are so evocative.

  • this makes want to punch cats, it's so good.

eat ur heart out metal freaks.

  • Comment removed

  • wow isn't Joni so stunning when she was younger with the sweetest voice.

  • Why can't we have shows like this today?

  • @sizemeat

something to do with attention span... gee we're so smart, now what was I zapping?

  • she is so cute.

  • It's not hard to believe she was once known as Joanie Anderson - what's REALLY hard to believe is that Joanie Mitchell ever wore MASCARA ! I mean don't get me wrong, I've been a HUGE fan since childhood & Woodstock in the late 60's & bought about a half dozen of her albums over the many years, I've always felt she is a pretty woman but with make up? Joanie is a KNOCKOUT ! Thanks for uploading this rare glimpse !

  • @IsItEarthYet I think she looks better without makeup.

  • wow such clarity and innocence that was unheard of in her later music.

  • @w9j15g People who use the word promiscuity are usually too numb to realize they are frustrated. Don't knock what you can't get.

  • Moral d ecline? How about rap music, 911, ritalin, adhd, gay rights, aids, abortion and on and on. In your case Orwell is right. Decline is improvement.

  • does anyone know who the father is? Just curious...

  • Wonderful to see this early performance of the genius that became Joni Mitchell . Youtube is fantastic but it seems that many use it as little more than a place where they can vent their spleen and wax wrath about their hatreds and prejudices. I'm always mystified why so many watch artists they profess to hate and then feel they must tell the rest of us that they' hate them and why.

Seems like bad time management to me - but maybe the asinine retarded twerps have nothing else to do.

  • @thGory1 What a great comment - I've found that but have never found the wherewithall to express it so succinctly

  • @thGory1 That's beautiful....A classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. (One sentence about Joni, then three for "venting" your own "spleen") .

  • What the hell is it with all this animosity in the comments of a Joni Mitchell song? Joni is a fucking Goddess....

  • @lblmer who let you out? you some kind of metel head?

ok, maybe god? lol! i'm sure you no nothing of dylan or joni.

    or even music, btw.

  • @54taqiyya Are you stowe und?

  • @lblmer what moral decline? what do you mean, the decline where we can no longer freely victimize, gay or black people or be ignorant of human or animal rights? The moral decline where we can no longer use the church to oppress people... I think you will find that society is slowly becoming more moral, thoughtful and decent although it takes a while........

  • @lblmer "Dopey" is your comment. Born to take the highway was a song about the feeling of wonder and traveling. People have been writing songs about this feeling for HUNDREDS OF YEARS before Joni wrote hers, and this is simply her creation to describe it. ...and quite a good one.

"Beginning of moral decline" is just your "dopey" full-of-yourself, bullshit judgment.

Do you have a harsh moral judgments of her other songs? This is your problem.

  • What a woman. So complex, so talented, so pure, so adventurous, so beautiful. An amazing package. I'm not sure most of us share the same genetics.... I think she must be from a much more advanced planet somewhere. I'm grateful she wound up here! Thank you, Joni.

  • Gutted I can't get this song on CD! See, what you've done? Taunted me with something I can't have!!! *pout* Bought Ladies of the Canyon today and Song to a Seagull and Clouds should arrive next week. Exciting!

  • Cute !

  • She was my first girlfriend. I think I was 5 or 6. Still my best girlfriend.

  • @Kinthesky1 You blew it, pal - shoulda hitched a ride on that star! ;-)

  • Wow, what a voice .... and quite the cutie. She was still only 21 years old here.

  • Very talented lovely Joni Mitchell AND the Chapin brothers looking on!

  • Thanks for uploading this, even at this stage Joni shines above the lame-ass

band & gives a glimpse of the great things to come.

  • I would love to have one of those at home

  • Thanks, this is a true treasure! American Idol contestants & hopefuls should see this. If I was a record producer and saw this at the time-"Wow, there's a winner here!"

  • A female Gordon Lightfoot. God bless Canada.

  • @BLM912er I'm with you on Canada, but Gordon, as good as he is, is no match for Joni Mitchell. Very few are.

  • WOW! Thanks for posting. :)

  • Beautiful.

  • I've skipped on concrete, danced on cobbles

Stuck to pavement in the heat

I've seen where children crouched at marbles

Made chalk circles in the street

Found a penny at my feet

I was born to take the highway, I was born to chase a dream

Any road at all is my way, Any place is where I've been

    Anything is what I've seen

  • boundless talent!!!!!!!!!!

  • GENIUS!

  • everyone has a beginning :)

  • harry chapen? cat's in the cradle?

  • @54taqiyya Yup, it sure looked like Harry Chapin (with an "i') to me. ...I looked him up and, yes, that's definitely THE Harry Chapin. He had a brother, Tom, etc... Too bad this video doesn't show them performing, also. (And, I am a H U G E JM fan!)

  • I really would have loved to be a teen in the sixties! I would be a total hippie and I would stalk Joni! I LOVE HER!

  • She was so good! Her intricate guitar harmonies, her voice so melodic and so precise, wow!

  • Did you hear Dave Van Ronk, the guy with the beard, pounding his guitar in support of Joni at the end of her song? Wow! That's dave van ronk!!!! This is the same guy who dylan worshipped in the early 60's in the new york coffee house scene. And here's old dave totally mesmerised by young joni. No doubt he could recognize, better than anyone in that place, a musical giant in the making.

  • An Angel!

  • Abortion - safe, legal and rare! Let's hear it for prochoice! And let's hear it for playground insult words that have lost the power to sting!

  • The next person to talk about abortion is a cunt

  • UNBELIEVABLE! Thank you so much for posting this!

  • @brian14leonard She didn't post it. She copied these vids from my old account of lightning49, even stealing my descriptions, words for word. I got them from a rare DVD traded by someone in Japan.

  • @clairedelune49 whoops! Well, thank *you* for having originally posted these early-Joni videos!

  • The kids are like "this ain't HULLALABOO" !!?!? They also didn't blink about that crazy drum sound. hahah

    great video, thanks.

oh, and like, when Joni opened her box of Talent, was she like, oh "perfect fit!" ?? She sounds amazing for her young age, and sounds together with all that intonation and tonality which she graced many other songs to her future with.

  • Oscar is almost as enchanted as I am. I've got the exact same silly astonished smile on my face.

    Imagine seeing this performance live.

  • henhenstoll The host's last name is "Brand" (v. "Brandt"). Great post!

  • this is a beautiful song. its too bad its not released elsewhere.

  • How awesome that when they announced the 'Chapin Family' and it was those Chapin Brothers! Thanks for posting this rare perfomance!

  • How awesome was it when he announced the 'Chapin Family' and it turned out to be THAT Chapin family! These talented writer/musicians would never make it on plastic dildo Idol Simon Cowell's musical robotics factory!

  • I agree, this isn't the place for an abortion debate. I enjoyed the video very much.

I am somewhat taken aback by all these comments about how pretty Joni is. It's as if people are saying "You've written great songs and become a great artist - but let me pay you a REAL compliment." I don't think her looks are that important.

  • ohh she so beautiful!

  • @briebrie29 I agree, she is so beautiful. Also, I don't know why everyone is talking about abortion on this page. First of all, who knows if she got an abortion? And second of all, she put her child up for adoption because she was poor at that time, did not get an abortion. Finally, its an insult to Joni that you're having this ridiculous discussion on a video of beautiful music.

  • What a treasure from that time. Joni, Oscar, Harry C. and Dave Van. R., Just appreciate it, it ain`t gonna happen again.

  • Joni was so beautiful! A singular talent who brightens my day. She is a reflection of the best things of my childhood. I thank God he blessed us with her.

  • This is some sweet early footage, easily my favorite incarnation of Joni. She is gorgeous and her eyes are twice the size they were 5 years later.

  • lol

  • Thanks for posting this!!!! It´s so beautiful that brought tears to my eyes....

Look at the guys sharing the stage... she begins to sing and they are in a trance...

Once again, Thank you so much....

    Muchas gracias, amiga!!!

  • What is about those incredible eyes in the pre "fake color contact lense" era...Joni had them, Judy Collins had them, Joan Baez had them....just incredible eyes....oh, and all three of them could sing too :-)

  • @binstence ""Joni..abortion would have robbed you of a daughter""

She WAS robbed of her daughter, and it was because of self righteous prigs like you. People like you called her a slut and her baby a bastard. A few years later -

AFTER the peace and love movement, and dismantling of old prejudices - she couldve kept her baby.

  • But to make the whiners happy -- I love the video and the song. Joni was great, right from the beginning!

Thanks for putting it up - where in the world did you find it?

  • That IS Joni's message in all her music - You don't tell me who to love, what to love, where when how many times. No one has the right to put their shackles on someone else's love.

If that isn't her mesage, I don't know what is.

  • You see the beauty and talent assembled on that stage and then throw insults back and forth? You watch that vision perform and then post vicious notes on that issue? You are beyond help. All of you.

  • I think its absolutely RELEVANT to smoke out these assholes and give em what for. Those judgemental, bible babbling pro-lite assholes are the same kind of people who hindered Joni when she got pregnant. People like them made her give up her baby in the first place. If only it had been a few years later, she couldve been an unwed mother and kept her baby. When I come across one of these assholes, Im not gonna let em forget it. And Joni attacks em too, in her music.

  • @Hexl702

No one "made" her give up her baby. You think she wanted to drag an infant around with her when she launched her career and did all those club dates? Get real. Joni was young and, to her credit, apparently realistic about the situation. It was better for the kid, too. Don't make stupid assumptions, and don't blame pro-life people for this situation. Moron.

  • @sportsmediaamerica ""drag an infant around with her did all those club dates""

Except she wasnt a singer when she got pregnant, she was an art student. She couldve given her parents partial custody like many women do while she launched her career. But she couldnt even tell her parents, because of the SHAME - not her own, but from the disapproving assholes prevalent in society at the time who wouldve given em a hard time. Moron.

  • Joni is and was SO talented, beautiful! Thanks for sharing this!

  • Thanks for sharing this! So beautiful - the voice, the face, the times...

  • Beautiful girl. Great voice. Great song. I give it seven stars.

  • That was cool when they introduced the Chapin brothers and you hear "Harry" being yelled by Harry Chapin. This is a stunning performance.

  • Back to the Music. I've never seen such an early Clip. What a beautiful vision this is. She sang just like an Angel...

    Johnny Caprise

  • I find it disgusting that you use this as a forum for an abortion debate. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Go somewhere else. Maybe to one of the MILLION places available to you on the internet for that kind of misery.

This is music. Don't taint it.

  • @Joebycool ""don't taint it"""

Yeah, making you THINK is a really horrible thing, isn't it.

  • @Hexl702 I am a law student. I spend my whole day thinking about people's problems and learning about arguments and tragedies and injustices. I often go to forums where abortion IS discussed, because it's an issue I want to have a voice about. However, this is a beautiful piece of music. So don't you dare accuse me of not wanting to think, when I have come to listen to Joni Mitchell. I want to think about beautiful music right now, that is what I'm here and that is what this space is for.

  • We're not asking you to like abortion. We know the proliquors don't like abortion. We want to you to not interfere.

In short, we want you to be the same bystander you were the other 50 million times.

  • @Hex702 -- hex comes in many sizes. Any mechanic can wrench you out of yer shoes. Darn, quit doin' that biker crank too.

Hey good men, what is; PWN ? Send this old fock a defination.

  • Yeah, we've heard it before. You guys congratulate yourselves on being master-debaters "What a debate! We sure PWNed! them!"

But abortion is legal throughout the land. Does that make you PWNed! by the prochoicers? LOL!

  • I read in articles where Joni said " You have no idea how we were treated in those days, young unmarried mothers."

Geez, wonder who does that unmarried women with babies - calls them whores, sluts, contributing to the decline of society :::Hint -- it's not OUR side:::

  • Proloofas bring out the worst in me -- GRR-- I came here to praise Joni. I hadnt heard this song before - Praise YouTube!

  • @binstence

Even if Roe VWade were overturned, some 23 states would still keep it legal. Now what - you gonna pass laws against interstate travel?

Anyhow, Joni gives every indication that she can't stand self-righteous prigs like you.

People like you made her give up her baby in the 1st place - if you get an abortion, the fundies and rightwads call you a slut. If youre unmarried and make the beautiful choice to have the baby, they STILL call you a slut, and the baby a bastard.

  • Joni is so beautiful

  • Holy shit...the amount of talent on that stage is INSANE!

  • actually it's much more like saying you have to be a slave to understand being a slave (owning a slave's body and being in a slave's body). the woman owns that fetus as much as she owns her breasts and her nose. if it weren't for her body nourishing it, it would die.

but all of this is really mute because this is about how lovely joni mitchell is.

    which she is. =)

  • it is always a women's issue. unless you have a child growing in your body, you can't understand this issue. women have known since the dawn of time how to get rid of unwanted pregnancies by natural means (parsley anyone?). your term death-worshiper is what is offensive and uncalled for. you can have opinions, but you can't expect to be taken seriously if those opinions turn into hateful labels. then it's just slander.

  • @fabuloussabre ""term death worshipper is uncalled for"""

The prolickers say things like that out of sheer frustration. They've been calling women sluts, whores and murderers for 37 years now and havent made a dent! Abortion holding steady around 1.2 million a year. It's so popular it practically sells itself!

  • you're male.

this isn't your place. this is a women's issue. unless you have a female body there is no way you should have opinions about wombs or what stays in them / comes out.

  • wow thats all i can say

  • Was that Harry Chapin of "Cat's in the Cradle" fame that he pointing at before Joni?

  • This is incredible!! Awesome! Who knew she played with open tuning so early in her career? Thanks for posting this- i love it!

  • Do you have the part with Dave Van Ronk performing? It's pretty hard to find footage of him performing this young, and this is pretty good quality. If you have it, could you post it?

  • Apparently this is a dvd clip so no... I asked the same question before!

  • I AM IN LOVE.

  • You Assh*le. How f*cking dare you. By what absurd egotism do you presume to know what I or anybody else on here believes about life, God, birth, death, the human soul, abortion or anything else!?! Much less judge them for what you presume they believe, whether they do or not? Or do you expect to be patted on the head and praised for your superior, fatuous pose of conscience? You think you're going to convert anyone to your POV by condescending and sneering at them? How very Christlike.

  • Get a life. Stop judging the hard choices of others. Take your preachy pomposity and stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

  • @searcherboy Exactly! Why deliberitely troll comments pages on YT just to vent other issues on someones non-evil music post? CREEPY SAD LIFE YOU HAVE.

  • Would y'all shut the &$#@ up and LISTEN TO THE MUSIC! The woman is a treasure no matter what the history. Idiots!

  • And Joni would be the first one to say that she supports another woman's right to make a different choice.

But nice try trying to force your will on other people by using someone else.

  • @binstence well, her daughter was a model!

  • This is absolutely lovely in all ways. Thanks for posting.

  • How cool that Joni + Harry Chapin + Dave Van Ronk were all on the same show. I wonder what it would have been like if they'd done something together.

  • I always knew she was an incredibly talented singer, but I have never seen footage of her this young before. She is stunningly beautiful. Wow! Age isn't fair to some of us.

  • Who knew....WOW!

  • Some women do film well in black and white don't they! Seriously, you could already pick up on tat poetic way of writing, inventive timing and such in so young a woman, how was she not going to be a sensation....what a time those days were..has it been that long ago...:_-(

  • Great. Joni was and still in a class of her own.

  • If the music thing didn't work out she could have been a model.

  • Amazing. What a spectacular talent she was.

  • @StereoSpace: is

  • Am I the only one who noticed Harry Chapin with his brothers at the start of this video? That was when they were signed to Epic and before Tom took off in that Taxi to WOLD.

  • As a long time fan of Joni Mitchell ,I've never see her like this with her hair done up. She's "Model" beautiful. Alas like me we all age.

  • I love Joni, she is my all time favorite singer and artist. Thank you for posting this rare vidio.

  • Wow, very early Joni songwriting. You can already hear the Joni sound. I've never heard this song before.

  • She's still wonderful.

  • Wow. Beautiful. I wish this were released.

  • Just wonderful ... a precious diamond !

  • So when you see the geek of any stripe, show respect, could be a Baby Joni. Look at these guys, they sure did...

  • Joni has definitely evolved over the decades but the talent was always there.

  • Wish I was in the audience that evening.

  • why? you'd be an old buzzard now like joni..i saw joni in 2007...fucking scary..she was like 64, looked 84...smokes like a fucking chimney and her face looks it..ya know how cigarette smokers look after years of toking on tobacco...i looked her over.and the vibe i got was that she was nuts...she hadnt seen her daughter in 40 years..she dumped her when she was an infant gave her up for adoption..recently the daughter is visiting joni at her home and joni slaps her in the face, LAPD came to home

  • Comment removed

  • nuts she might be but listen to little green before you judge her on the adoption

  • BabyGwar, you know absolutely sweet dick all about Joni MItchell. Your words make you sound like an old bitter crone. If you don't like her, move on. And don't let the door hit you on your way out, douchebag.

  • Comment removed

  • The year I was born and, if I'm not mistaken, an extremely pivitol year for music and the whole counterculture movement.

  • She,s mine I saw her first .
