I have this album and am touched by this song. The only thing I would change is the part about "America being as she should be" (implying that it's best the CSA was subjugated) since a Southern nation was a fantastic idea in 1860-61 and is even a better idea today. For me, the refrain about "winning that last one victory" conjures up the image of Southern Independence at last.

21 Dec 1859, Lincoln relayed to Gen Scott "to be as well prepared as he can to either hold, or retake, the forts, as the case may require, at, and after the inauguration"
He was preparing to invade before he took office.

actually if u do think of it there was never a surrender of the confederate forces, general lee surrendered the army of virginia, so therefore there never was a peace treaty signed or surrender made, so technically, the csa still does exist, it is an illegally occupied country
Actually, Confederate commanders surrendered their units one at a time as word of Lee's surrender spread. So yeah, the Confederate armed forces did officially surrender and the Southern states were brought back into the union legally.
What he refers to, I believe, is the fact that the CSA civil governments did not surrender. Soldiers do not make up a government; their surrender does not equate to the end of the nation. Also, to call the way states were re-admitted into the union 'legal' is to put a very generous spin on things.
True, and I understand. However, the surrender of all Confederate forces was prompted by Robert E. Lee. Once he surrendered, it was a domino effect. Lee commanded the respect of the Southern people by the war's end and in many ways he overshadowed Davis as a leader. The South chose to concede victory, if unofficially, to the North when Lee saw that it was pointless to continue the war. That didn't mean they liked it, but there was no point in continuing.

This song made me proud and sad. I love the South more than I can express, though I've been raised away from my birth place for far too long. As a child in California I remember convincing half of my fifth grade class to be Confederate heroes in our class's history contest (class split to debate War Between the States). To Chapter4 notes: The reason none of the Southerners were tried for treason was that the Federal Gov, the Northern States, were fearful that the Supreme Court would have ruled that they conducted an illegal war of supression. Remember, the victor writes history. A couple of good reads are A Southern Star for MD, written by a Johns Hopkins University faculty member. A small example of how the constitution and our bill of rights were trashed in the State of Maryland.

Wholesale murder, rape, pillaging, arson and starvation of the southern population, rich, poor, black and white. Written in 2007 and titled, "War Crimes Against Southern Civilians." A must read for historians to get the full picture. These atrocities are reminiceint of Nazi Germany. The victor in any war writes history and of course they are the good guys, yeah- right!

Luckily our country passed the test. I had family who fought for both north and south. But i dont think our country would be as great as it is today if we were two separate countries.

From what I learned, the south did not secceed/start the war because the northern goverment said "abandon slavery and stay in the union!", they secceeded because the northern goverment said "abandon slavery and stay in the union, or we raise an army and force you to do so!"?

Actually, what the northern government said was "stay in the union and pay the taxes, you can keep your slaves, and all will be well." (see Lincoln's first inaugural address for corroboration of this).
21 Dec 1859, Lincoln relayed to Gen Scott "to be as well prepared as he can to either hold, or retake, the forts, as the case may require, at, and after the inauguration"
He was preparing to invade before he took office.
The War, like all wars, was about Money & Power...Nothing more.

actually if u do think of it there was never a surrender of the confederate forces, general lee surrendered the army of virginia, so therefore there never was a peace treaty signed or surrender made, so technically, the csa still does exist, it is an illegally occupied country

Actually, Confederate commanders surrendered their units one at a time as word of Lee's surrender spread. So yeah, the Confederate armed forces did officially surrender and the Southern states were brought back into the union legally.

What he refers to, I believe, is the fact that the CSA civil governments did not surrender. Soldiers do not make up a government; their surrender does not equate to the end of the nation. Also, to call the way states were re-admitted into the union 'legal' is to put a very generous spin on things.

True, and I understand. However, the surrender of all Confederate forces was prompted by Robert E. Lee. Once he surrendered, it was a domino effect. Lee commanded the respect of the Southern people by the war's end and in many ways he overshadowed Davis as a leader. The South chose to concede victory, if unofficially, to the North when Lee saw that it was pointless to continue the war. That didn't mean they liked it, but there was no point in continuing.

This song made me proud and sad. I love the South more than I can express, though I've been raised away from my birth place for far too long. As a child in California I remember convincing half of my fifth grade class to be Confederate heroes in our class's history contest (class split to debate War Between the States). I agree 100% its about respect and honor of our heritage something not many today have nor understand. It something that is as much apart of us as anything else. For most families just like myself had relatives killed and family members who served as my 3rd Great Grandfather did. He fought for the same reason most men did... to protect his family. Many today do not respect themselves or anything for that matter. One of the reasons are country is in such a mess today people quit caring.

Our hearts are not in the past they are where ever freedom can be found. Our hearts are with our nation, but to honor our southern heroes and heritage is not saying down with the US all it is saying is to honor heroes of the past.

Great song, and good video, but you shouldn't have been so hard on ol' Bragg. While he was hesitant at times, his subordinates were as much to blame for the AOT losses as he was.

Bragg was an Idiot. He had over 6000 troops north of Fort Fisher....and just sat there while it was overrun by the Union in Jan of 1865. Worst General the south ever had.
