Mine had sharp edges on the barrel ramp and the frame just below the ramp. You could see the copper build up. I removed the sharp edges and polished the ramp and it will load slow and easy on hollow points or target rounds.
@Mattsplat1975 Do you have a sharp edge on the frame just below the ramp? My rounds were dragging over it as they left the mag so I rounded it with a .010" radius and the edges at the top and bottom of the ramp also. I tried last night to make mine hang by holding it back, but it will not hang.
@MrNolandone I was looking at mine but when I load a full magazine it is clear that the first round isn't anywhere near that frame edge. It hasn't ever jammed on me so I am not too concerned about it. It is a great little gun. Thanks for posting the comments.
@Mattsplat1975 You are right I also looked at mine. I think the barrel work is all it realy needed. Being a machinist I just don't like burrs and sharp edges. I think it is great gun also.
What is the best ammo to use. My LCP is not broke in yet and has not chambered a round a few times with Remington fmj....usually 2 round chambered I suppose after the gun loosens up a little, should have no problems.
@silverexplosion Mine does fine with everything I have ever used in it. I wish I could help. Everything from target to personal defense of all kinds. The target ammo I used was Winchester bulk packs but I have used a number of personal defense rounds and all work just fine.
glad to see I was not the only one that has a hard time loadind the first round with there lcp, however I highly reccomend sending it back to ruger for repair, it took ten days from the time I sent it to the day i got it back and the improvement was 100 percent well worth it.
Hi Matt... I just ordered one from Buds and while reading the reviews, some folks said that hollow points would jam up, but the FMJ would not. What's your take on that? Please tell me what ammo you use for personal protection and which you use for training rounds. Thanks so much! Just trying to do my homework before it gets here.
@aussiedog29 I haven't had any problems. I haven't tested tons of different ammo but it has shot target and hollow-points both with no problems. You will love how easy this gun is to carry, by the way. Hope you like yours as much as I like mine.
@Mattsplat1975 It's going to sound crazy but I have a Smith & Wesson 686, TNP Tactical and a Smith & Wesson 9mm Sigma but for some weird reason I like my Ruger LCP best maybe it's because its so easy to shoot and EDC! LOL I just freaking love my RUGER!
Im a little heavier then you if not around the same. And I sit on mine with the CT on it and have had no problems just if you wanted to know. nice vid.
@ChokeYouu That is good to know. I just didn't feel good sitting on all that plastic. I felt like I might break something someday. Glad to hear it is holding up though. Thanks for the post.
wow stupid NEVER have a gun loaded unless u are at a shooting range or somwhere safe expecially not in ur house thats how people get killed and u even have a gun safety video ,how about u make a new one by the information i have just told you
when I held this in the store the magizine seemed a little loose when I gripped it tight, like it seperated a bit from the gun when gripping it tight. Do you notice this? or does it bother you?
@aw3212 I have never notice that at all. I am not home at the moment and I am carrying a different gun with me. I wish I could check it out and see if I notice what you mean. Never bothered me though. I am wondering if it only does that when there is an empty mag. Usually mags fit tighter with loaded because to the top cartridge creates friction on the bottom of the slide.
I might suggest Buffalo bore 100 grain Hardcast flat nose
987 fps / 211 ft lbs. / +Ps 1150 fps / 294 ft lbs. ( I know it is a no no in an LCP ) but I put em through the LCP. HARD CAST is by nature a tad slippery. It WILL feed slicker then Monkey snot and penetration is excellent.
Just my 2 cents. As always polish the feed ramp. MY LCP has never had a failure to feed, :)
@Mattsplat1975 Yeah, Most folks have complaints with racking that 1st round. But honestly, when I loaded my mags with Buffalo hardcast flat nose I can release the slide as SLOWLY as I care to and they will not hang up on the feed ramp like a Hornady Critical Defense HPs. But it will feed ANYTHING if ya just pop the slide release. Expensive Ammo but comforting to have. Cheers
I took a polishing dremel head to the loading ramp and put a mirror finish on it and that has helped with the loading. It does still happen but not as bad.
@92fssharpshooter I did the same to mine. It is nice and shiny now but it didn't really change anything. But I still haven't had any failures in this gun.
Good video and intro to the LCP. I've always owned a 357 revolver that's too big for concealed carry, and recently took a CC class and got my license. I've been looking for the right firearm for me to carry and a cop friend suggested the LCP. Your videos have been very informative and I appreciate the warning about the initial load. I hope I'll be able to check that out at a range before I purchase the gun. Thanks and keep up the good work, especially re: handguns and concealed carry!
Man, I was so pissed when I tried to chamber my first round and that happened (about 20 minutes ago). I've found that snapping your wrist that's holding the gun in a downward motion helps a lot too (in addition to letting the slide slam forward, of course). Thanks for the info!
@wavesOfFury Yeah, don't stress. It should cycle just fine without problems. Mine has NEVER jammed. Just rack it hard the on the initial load. Thanks for the comment!
@XxChOzEn1xX Yep, it isn't a problem. I have never had any problems with this little gun at all. It has fed and fired every time I have pulled the trigger. Even during break-in. Not a single glitch. Glad the video was helpful.
@havefunletsauction I will have to check that out. But to be honest, I can't imagine a more comfortable way to carry this little gun than the pocket holster. I can't even tell it is there.
I recently bought an LCP for my wife and immediately noticed the same thing with the initial loading. I've been told that certain types of ammo load better than others but I'm haven't tested this yet. I have a friend that owns one and his does the same thing if you "pussy" it.
I've also been told that this might go away after firing a few hundred rounds through the gun. Since this is for my wife and she's small I'd hate for that first round to jam when she needs it.
@MrShushhhh I am not really worried about it. Mine hangs up very lightly and I have to try to get it to do it. I have also played around with it a little and when I draw from my pocket holster just the friction of it sliding out makes if pop back into place (keep in mind I had to intentionally half-cock the slide and gently put it in in the first place). I probably haven't even put 100 rounds through mine yet but might be a good idea and see if it corrects the problem. Thanks for the comment!
I own a ruger lcp, I have added the +1 mag extender and hogue jr grip. It is better controlled with these additions because of the length and width of the grip, I can actually get my pinky finger on the grip now .The only problem with the gun is thats its too light , it needs some weight added to the front just under the barrel at the tip to keep the muzzle from climbing so much when it is fired, this will allow you to keep your sight or lazer on target.
@ajd2003 I guess that is the trade-off for concealability. Bulking up the gun would make it more shootable but not as comfortable and lightweight for carrying. I have other guns I carry when I want the bigger grip. The mods sure would be nice at the range though. I usually can't stand shooting more than a couple mags from the LCP. Man, I need more money for guns and accessories for them! Thanks for the comment, brother!
Hey, i have a Ruger LCP with crimson trace laser grip. I am looking for a inside the waist leather holster to hit it. Do you know any good sites or companys that makes one?
@borntohunt89 I don't and the reason is because after carrying it in a pocket holster I haven't wanted an inside the waistband holster. I absolutely love how comfortable and easy this gun is to carry in a pocket holster. Good luck in your search but if you haven't tried it yet I would first try buying a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster for this little pistol. You will love it.
@Denomolise I know you can see me kind of trying to bend it. It doesn't really have a lot of play but it is made of plastic so if you push it hard you can feel it flex a little. Sorry it took to long to reply.
i want one of these but i am gonna wait till they have ammo on the shelf no one can keep this round in stock.u have to be there when a stray case shows up
So maybe you will never get one! Ha ha. It is hard stuff to find. The good news is that these guns aren't comfortable to shoot so you won't be blazing through the ammo at the range. 2 or 3 magazines and I am done with this little screamer usually. But an awesome carry gun for sure.
Mine had sharp edges on the barrel ramp and the frame just below the ramp. You could see the copper build up. I removed the sharp edges and polished the ramp and it will load slow and easy on hollow points or target rounds.

@MrNolandone I polished mine to a mirror finish but you still need to give it a hard slingshot to load the first round.
