I've listened to this about 20 times and cried a couple times. Perhaps we should form a panel of men deeply moved by the lyrics of Earle. Would fill stadiums and perhaps eventually become a tax exempt religion. That sounds like a lot o work though ;)
I agree with you that Morrison never achieved the greatness that Steve Earle has as far as lyrics go. He was not a true heddonist though. Heddonists believed that whatever made you feel good was good for you and your soul. Excess of anything makes you feel bad therefore it was bad to over indulge because the outcome made you feel bad. True heddonists believed in moderation far more than people think now. Over indulgence is what people mean when they talk about heddonism. That is wrong.
This is a wonderful song. Very useful too. Its a great one to say to someone randomly at 5 oclock in the morning when they complain about having to get up. Ex. "Ugh, its too early, i hate getting up in the morning." "this is the best time of the day, the dawn etc" lol.
Jim Morrison never lived long enough to mature into such a great songwriter as Steve Earle. Jim was a hedonistic narcissist while Steve is a populist who overcame his drug and alcohol addictions.. There is a big difference and record sales don't make Jim a better writer.

Shakespeare is rocking from beyond the grave, a smile on his face, a tear in his eye and holding up a peace sign; wondering. Have we learned nothing?

This song just exudes Jim Morrison. Good lung capacity, too.
