In the 70's Connie Boswell did Viva(?) paper towel commercials, As a child I used to imitate her, as she came on screen and said in a nasal voice, "hi, I'm Connie Boswell". something about that made me laugh like a hyena. Still don't know why til this day.
im just mad about these girls! this is my fave song,i found this live version on the cd,"airshots and rareities" i also found the 78 record on ebay! its a shame that they are all but forgotten.does anyone know if any of their relatives(children?)are around and are they keeping their memory alive? email me if any fans know anything @ tonyboy0509@aol.com thanks everybody!
It was a session band billed as "The New Yorkers" consisting of Manny Klein (tp), Tommy Dorsey (tb), Jimmy Dorsey (cl, as) Arthur Schutt (p), the fabulous Eddie Lang (g), Joe Tarto (sb) and Stan King (d).
The Andrew Sisters started as a Boswells cover band. The Boswells were arguably the first pop group in a modern sense. Every girl group ever has a trace of the Boswells. Also, they were the only girl group until the Bangles (1981 - so that is sixty years) to write their own arrangements and play all their own instruments. Ella Fitzgerald patterened her style after Connee Boswell.
Also, they were trained musicians from the age of about 8. Connee was one of the best arrangers that pop/jazz has ever had, and she learnt more from personal friend Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby. And Martha was a concert pianist who could plaay anything ever written for the piano.
You think these chicks were innocent? They were hanging around in Storyville when Vet was 16. You better bet they drank their share of bootleg liquor and smoked their share of dope in the smokeeasies too! The life of a a musician in vuadeville was just as edgy then as now, if not more. Look at them more carefully,
Boswell sisters were natural beauties, modest make-up, thick hair, stress-free faces, relaxed disposition, 'n natural talent, raw gift.. those were d times..wholesome entertainment..hi-tech electronic gadgets were unheard of..we must preserve this kind of classic, captivating entertainment. Perfect job, mrhokum!
What about the hair...will no one say anything about that hair, and the little curl each one has...and how about those corsages and the old VOX amp in the background and that this is the way three angels sound when they harmonize!
The Boswell Sisters - Connee (L), Vet (C-Standing) and Martha (R - piano), began their careers in New Orleans. Connee was paralyzed from a childhood accident (or had polio according to the comments of several viewers) and always had to perform seated.
Thank you so much! I love the Boswell Sisters and have been listening for years, but this is the first film I ever have seen of them! I highly recommend all their records.
What can you say -- just amazing.

Does anyone have a clip with the Boswell Sisters singing "We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye"? They were marvellous.
Corrie121 4 years ago
As far as I know they were never filmed performing that rather surreal song.
