Got to love the late Gene Page who did Barry White's strings on this one. Listen carefully after taxi cabs a hootin. There are 2 short honks on trombone.
There is just enough, barely enough rhyme within the lyrics to make a style for common time. EJ is an expert in common time, can stretch it out for as long as he needs. Sure Bernie wrote the story, but I wonder if that is how he read it. Or what was left out to squeeze into the bars.
I want to throw away the bars and Free the music.............
I don't understand the bickering. EJ and BT complemented each other with their lyrical and musical skills to form what may arguably be the best collaboration of their time. Success may have personally propelled EJ to still sell records but no where near the quality and depth after BT and he parted ways. The lyrics are thought provoking and the music and vocals behind it put it into song. Why argue who was who without who when they formed a dynamic pair deserving of equal credit.
EJ won't exist with out Bernie. The song writing is the key. Bernie was under paid. They could have gotten anybody to sing his songs. Elton couldn't write a Pepsi commercial song if his life depended on it.
@va4rebs: dude, you're an idiot. Hallmark Cards are written by high schoolers everyday - and while good, Bernies lyrics are just about thier local town and boozed infused lifestyles. Elton Johns voice, playing, LYRICS, melody and showmanship are what makes him a superstar. How many people can write this music? You dumb ass.
if he wasn't gay why did he not marry and have children. Or was offering your shirt a samaritan sharlitan ship, washing your feet the act of a real man?
These ridiculous comments! None of the lyrics to any of the songs, this one included, were written by elton john. They are 100% Bernie Taupin and he is 100% straight and a bit of a womanizer too-- married for the fourth time. Any homosexual references are strictly in your imagination.
Who cares what it means? The music RULES. Philadelphia sound BEFORE it was even called that. Also the lyrics are always so inside, you would have to ask Elton and Bernie.
I have a book on Elton and in it he talks bad about some of the celebrities of that time . Everything he said about them that he hated he later became .
the diamente lovers in hyde park - holding hands... (a great line - well done bernie. the vocal on this song is sooooooo black. fabulous example of elton's style at its best - with the high notes in perfect order...)

Not a really a strong album, but Tell Me When The Whistle Blows, Meal Ticket, and Someone Saved My LIfe Tonight make it worthwhile for me.

It's about growing up but it is hard for him,so he likes adventure too much and it has homosexual references as well...It is Elton John

This song fascinates me. Elton was being subtley honest in his lyrics.
"Part of me asked the young man for the time' as in, to spend time with him.
'With a cold, vacant stare of undo concern he said 'nien'- meaning 'No' in German.
The whole album 'Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboys' is, in part, an ode to homosexuality.
