Quite possibly, the finest, most nuanced performance by a female vocalist I've ever seen or heard. It's what happens when a great singer is also a gifted actress. This wasn't Lea we just heard; this was Fantine.
Thanks to Cameron for bringing Salonga in to this production. Now, we don't have to put up anymore with videos of Ruthie Henshall's toad-like voice and wooden rendition of Fantine!
It's amazing how Lea has transformed over the years...from Eponine to Fantine...all I can say is "Brilliant!" She made us believe that she was a street riff raff with a heart and then a woman who lost in love but still dreams...brilliant!
Well, about the comparison between Lea and Ruthie, I prefer Ruthie. I'm no specialist is this kind of music and I've never watched Les Mis, but Ruthie sounds smoother to hear. Lea stretches a lot of words unnecessarily, in my humble opinion (like in "I dreamed that gooooooood would be forgiving)
I've always thought one of the greatest things about Fantine is the fact that she is dignified all the way to her end because she knows she is the one who determines her dignity. Lea Salonga goes more that route than Ruthie Henshall, who shows her breaking down more and more in the song rather than telling her story. :)
Both Lea and Ruthie are good. Personally I like Ruthie better though because of the raspiness of her voice because it gives it more of the "struggling to speak because I am about to cry" voice. Some people like it, others do not. Lea I feel does it a little too fast and sharp of emphasis, making it seem like she is trying too hard to put emotion into it. She does start to even out though.
She is a really great singer and actress - but knowing that the story takes place in France around 1815 it is kinda strange to see an asian face playing a poor france worker. No offense! I would find it kinda strange as well if a european or american actress would play Miss Saigon...
Les Miserable quickly became my all time favorite musical when I first saw it on broadway a couple of years before I moved to Tampa Florida. This song & singer/actress was one of the reasons why. Thank you for the share & memory fictionmindx.. Eddie theLIGHT/laLUZ
@aapratoi completely disagree yes lea is good but ruthie was 10x better hands down lea was just more emotional but she didn't do it the same justice ruthie had
I'm sorry to all you Lea lovers out there, but I just can't stand her interpretation of this song. I didn't like her as Eponine either... I guess I just think she exagerates everything WAY too much. The more I hear her sing, the more I dislike her. But she keeps on getting gigs, so maybe I don't know what I am talking about...
@SuperYmmat I completely get what you mean. I LOVE Lea Solonga but I can relate to what you're saying with Sarah Brightman. I beleive she's a fabulous singer looking at how successful she is.... but I just don't like her vioce. I'm not a big fan of her singing at all but, yaa.....
@SuperYmmat Yeah, I'm with you on this. She overacts. The final note is absolutely gorgeous, and she almost saves the song with that alone, but her transitions between phrases are just too rigid. There is nothing naturally melodic about her sound, despite how strong of a singer she is. I enjoy some of her other performances, but by no means would I even begin to consider her as the "quintessential Fantine."
@skny626 I heard a woman sing the part of Epenine in Buffalo about 8 years back. The part of John val was performed by Ivan Rutherford. Do you know if it was Lea Solonga? She was/They were excellent. My wife and I argue all the time over which musical is better, Les Mis, or Phantom. I say musically, Les Mis. Phantom of course, gets top billing on special effects.
Ruthie Henshall's version is 'the' version to me. Not to take away from Lea Salonga - who I think has a much better voice and is more technically gifted - this version is absolutely spectacular! But - and I think it's in part that it's the version I'm used - Ruthie's version definitely has intense emotion, and her voice gives credence to a woman who life has completely fallen apart.
i remember anne hathaway once said she loves a filipino singer. apparently, lea salonga is one of the most gorgeous singers in Philippine, even the best. besides, anne hathaway once sang "on my own" in an occasion. and her mother is an actress in theater. i personally guess that she may have appreciated lea salonga because miss saigon was still in broadway when she was a teenager. maybe i am wrong, but i would be very happy if someone who adore lea can have a chance to sing her/his icon's song.
...damn, I've been pronouncing her name wrong the whole time. I've been pronouncing Lea as "Lee-ah" instead of "leh-ah" because of people I know IRL whose names are pronounced like the former.
It's great that they got rid of Ruthie Henshall and invited Salonga back for the 25th anniversary. I couldn't stand Ruthie's ugly, throaty voice and her very stiff "acting." Salonga IS Fantine!
@mdiamse They didn't "get rid" of Ruthie Henshall. They chose different people for variety's sake, which is good. (Except for Jenny Galloway.) Ruthie's voice is gorgeous. Lea's nasal tone is not to everyone's taste. I like her fine though.
@mdiamse To say that Ruthie's interpretation of Fantine was stiff - or to slight her acting - is to not give her credit. Don't get me wrong, I adore Lea with an undying passion, but I think her version of Fantine is a bit too young. Ruthie's is older, held back to a degree, but no less emotional. It depends on your taste, I suppose, but don't let your love of one version make you hate any other one. =P
@mdiamse i'm confused.....some say here ruthie is better.....and u say lea is better....but i think the chosen cast for this play says it all right?haha
@mdiamse I disagree with you slightly. Lea is very good, but you can't say that Ruthie Henshall was all bad as that's merely your opinion. Personally, I like how Ruthie portrays Fantine. She doesn't pretty her situation up - she's a woman who's lost everything, and has to sell herself shortly before dying of consumption. Her voice SHOULD be throaty and harsh, in my opinion. But yes, Lea is amazing. :)
She is amazing and definetely one of my all-time favorite, but I have to say I think she is a better Eponine than she is a Fantine... Ruthie Henshall did it better

I prefer Lea Salonga live because of her ability to get in character. I like Ruthie Henshall on the 10th anniversary performance, she was better technically. However, I prefer emotion over a little technique. But I do like both performance very much.

great performance.
Mas gusto ko ang peformance ni Ruthie. Medyo hirap si Lea sa pitch ng song na eto..

@kuntrabida hndi po siya hirap. ayaw lang niya i falsetto para buo at mas mganda ung quality ng voice.

Fantine and Enjolras were the best filled roles of the 25th anniversary.

I prefer Lea Salonga live because of her ability to get in character. I like Ruthie Henshall on the 10th anniversary performance, she was better technically. However, I prefer emotion over a little technique. But I do like both performance very much.

@archieanders "RUTHIE HENSHALL the rough, ugly-voiced, straining-to-hit-the-high notes, and acts-as-wooden-as-a-tree CAREER-LESS DOMESTIC STARLET HAS BEEN..." How mean, lol!
