What makes you so certain that Neil deGrasse Tyson is any more of a source of logic and reason than Billy Graham? What happened in his life to make him such a "harsh" person? He grew up in the south among conservative evangelical Christians. Good theory. Called Reaction formation.Its a psycology concept in whcih people hide the true nature of ones self by publicly belittleing and opposing subjects. Usually if someone acts VERY strongly, almost to the point of irrationality about something...then they really arent that opposed to it , or sometimes are "it".

Like you said, he opposed gays. If his statements seemed irrational, then he very well could have been gay himself, but not knowingly would not have shown it, or ever come out.
