@TheIntolerantAtheist I didn't pay any attention to science class prior to1995 when I had teachers try to force me to. I don't see myself starting now. Science is a delicate subject on many levels. On many levels for many people some of what is covered in science classes crosses boundaries that need not be crossed in my view unless the parent of the child in question consents. What ways can kids be taught science in ways that don't cross boundaries? Thats what needs be addressed.

The entire educational system from the Dept. of Education to the various teachers unions are all liberal and push their agendas upon school children on a daily basis. It's not just secularism vs faith or homosexuality vs heterosexuality, it's also collectivist doctrine that is being pushed via the public "education" system.

@TheIntolerantAtheist I really haven't the slightest idea what eye care has to do with this conversation. Science is not liberal propaganda. Neither is US or world history. Neither is English Literature unless the ones teaching the above subject have an agenda and manipulate instruction and even text books to reflect their agenda. Some would say teaching evolution is crossing a boundary where it conflicts with their religious views, evolution a theory and not conclusively proven fact.

I am not familiar with Robert Bird, but I have heard the stories of Kennedy's mistress. That is heinous! However, Kennedy's policies may be too liberal for many people's tastes, but he doesn't infuse his policies with the kind of blind hatred that Jesse did. He doesn't hate jews, blacks, hispanics, atheists, women, gays,lesbians, foreigners and feminists.

Thanks for your comment. I respectfully disagree though: Washington had great views on liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Helms was more focused on taking liberty and the pursuit of happiness away from people with a different skin color/religion/gender or lifestyle. United we stand and divided we fall: This core American belief made this nation great and it is about loving your feelow Americans, regardless of skin color, gender, religion and lifestyle.

Let me give it a try - Maybe Jessee Helms actually had values and stood up for what he beleived in (even if you disagree with some of his policies). He did a lot of great things for this country (esp. for the military)! He attacked liberalism head-on!He was anti-big govt, anti-entitlements, anti-communism, and (most importantly) PRO-AMERICAN! The liberal wackos that criticize that South should live down here for a little while. You might start to understand why we feel the way we do politically.

When 18-year-old Ryan White died 1990 (contracting AIDS through transfusions) his mother went to Congress to speak on behalf of people with AIDS. She spoke to 23 representatives: Helms refused to speak to her even when she was alone with him in an elevator.

What happened in his life to make him such a "harsh" person? He grew up in the south among conservative evangelical Christians. Remember, in the Bible, Christ talks about helping fellow man, helping the poor and not judging your fellow man over 3,000 times. He never mentions gays a single time. Many fundagelicals are not really Christian. If Christ came back and saw what they do in his name, I suspect they would have a lot of explaining to do.

He might have been a gay man with internalized homophobia, he might have been someone with black ancestry in spite of the Caucasian looks (as I am myself - no drama in Brazil, for here an overwhelming majority of us is mixed-race), but he might just be a very power-hungry man who focused on a reactionary constituency. And it worked - how many times was he elected?

Good theory. Called Reaction formation.Its a psycology concept in whcih people hide the true nature of ones self by publicly belittleing and opposing subjects. Usually if someone acts VERY strongly, almost to the point of irrationality about something...then they really arent that opposed to it , or sometimes are "it".
Like you said, he opposed gays. If his statements seemed irrational, then he very well could have been gay himself, but not knowingly would not have shown it, or ever come out.
