this scene is actually a movie representation of the "divine comedy", written by Dante Alighieri. if you look close enough, you'll see that Satan has three faces and is eating three souls. you'll also see Dante and Virgilio while descending the tunnel, situated just below Satan, that leads to Purgatory, on the other side of the earth. hope to have helped someone :)

this is the bottom level of dante's "inferno" or "hell". the three faces of satan are each chewing on one of the world's famous traitors (judas iscariot, etc.). when dante and virgil pass the very bottom, they turn and see satan's BOTTOM half sticking out of the sheet of ice.
