You shold overclock your graphics card... Just tweak a few simple settings and you will get a HUGE gaming boost. You will get better graphcis, and faster gameplay!
My Samsung NC10 had a 20 second optimized boot time with the N270. You're also wrong about about the bump on the back due to the N280, the newer Samsung netbooks don't have the bumps on the back, uses an N270 and gets more battery life than the 1000HE and weighs less. I bought the 1005HA, there's no difference from the N270 and N280.
I hear a lot of good things about the aspire one. What would you say are the goods and cons about it? Im really considering getting one because its a bit on the lower end. A lot of reviews of it seems promising.
ok i gots a question...i was looking at either this or the new toshiba nb200 but 1 thing i wanna know is if the eee pc has a loud fan? i hate when comps have fans that never shut up.
Great review! But I do have one question. I updated to Windows 7 yesterday and it works pretty well, but one problem is that my webcam no longer works. Did you have that problem?
I have a really stupid question. I see there is only an Rj45 port and no Rj11 port. I assume with an adaptor one can use an RJ11 input for DSL without any problems?I'm thinking of buying this computer, but I know very little about such things
How is the sound? I have a Asus Surf 4G and the sound is pretty good for its size and much better than the Acer Aspire One that I just bought the sound is hard to hear since the speakers are on the bottom.
Great vid! I think im gonna go pick one up now! I have a question for u. How do u think windows 7 would run with 2gb of ram in the machine? i plan to put windows 7 on mine but is upgrading the ram worth it? thanks love ur videos!
I was debating between this computer and the new Asus 1008HA "Seashell." I had heard lots of reviews saying this computer was "heavy" and "bulky," but after seeing these videos those worries are assuaged. ;)
Now I dont want to bother you for going out of your way, but this would replace my rather crappy laptop. And just a quick question, the sound of the fan seems pretty loud when you start the thing up, is it really that loud, or do I have my (crappy) laptop speakers turned up too loud?
This review changed my opinion about the computer, because I wanted a powerful, small pc to replace my three year old laptop that was more expensive (and less powerful). I now am going to save up enough cash instead of buying the 300$ MSI Wind. But I would like to know what the indicators on the bottom stand for, and how long the battery would last running: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Screen Brightness set to full throttle, and runing a cpu and memory intensive application all at the same time.
How do you compare the Samsung NC10 to the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE Netbook? I was about to buy the Samsung when i saw your video and you have convinced me to buy the ASUS instead!. Great review by the way.
Could you maybe try running Ubuntu Netbook Remix on the Eee PC 1000HE to see how well it runs and if everything like Wi-Fi works out the box? I was planning on buying a Netbook to use Ubuntu on, and the 1000HE seems really impressive with it's long battery life and nice screen and keyboard. Thanks!
Hey Jeff, just a quick question. Can this boot off a memory stick? For example, could I install Windows 7 off it. I've done this on my current computer without any hassle.
Hi Jeff, thanks for the great reviews. I just got a 1000he on the strength of your comments. And so far I love it. I have installed Win7 7100rc, dual boot as you describe, but am having problems using the function keys (volume/screen brightness etc). In one vid you mention compatibility mode, which I found, but can't figure out how to apply it to the function keys!!
hi, correct me if Im wrong but the small increases in performance the n280 has over the n270 are lost in the 1000he because it uses the exact same chipset which essential bumps the increased bus speed back down to what it was before with the N270? Also could you tell me whether the plastic under the keyboard bends when pressing keys as some vids that show the keyboard being typed on all show that the plastic bends like its made of cheap paper?
I'm considering one of these with two disperate principle uses:
1. Take with me when traveling for Skype, email, etc. and storing digital pictures.
2. Use at home in my easy chair connected to my big HDTV LCD to show the pictures to visitors/family and to check my email without getting up from the chair.
Is this a good laptop for the second use?
Is it possible to connect to the TV (it has all the conncet options) with cable or - preferably - wirelessly?
great review of this netbook I was thinking of getting a netbook. Now I am sure I want this one thanks to your review. Btw, can you make a video on how to install additional memory. thanks
The 1000HE can NOT address 667MHz RAM with the Intel 945GSE chipset. The chipset can only use 400 and 533MHz RAM. Your computer may display 667 in BIOS or startup but if you disable Spash Screen (or whatever it is) it shows up as DDR2-533MHz. You can also check and make sure in CPU-Z, it only shows up as 533MHz, the 667 is grayed out.
I have a question, when/if you slightly tilt your netbook do your fans grind? I'm having that issue with slight tilting during moving the netbook around. Also my top chrome function buttons have started to become less responsive during use or not working at all until I restart even after doing a clean restore not sure if its my machine and worth the RMA hassle.
Jeff, nice reviews you've posted on the Asus 1000HE. Curious of your experience in connecting this to an LCD monitor; can it drive 1920x1200 on the LCD? Lower priority is whether it supports dual display and extended desktop modes. Thanks in advance. Keep the reviews coming!
Well to answer my own questions. I installed Diablo 2 LoD, Unreal Tournament, UT2k4, Day of Defeat, and currently installing Half-Life 2 (haven't tested it yet) However, all those games run perfectly maxed out. Screen resolution 1024X600 is a bit strange so many are ran under 800X600. Even though you can easily game on with all your cult classics. I just upgraded my ram to 2gb today and deff noticed better fps. Also the inet connection on this netbook rock. getting 10-16mbit easy all the time
you can view Hulu in Canada but you'll first have to download a program called Hotspot Shield. It would be great if you can test Hulu out on this machine. I have an HP mini (which I absolutely love) but I've been eying this machine for a while.
as ive stated in the comments before i can get hulu from canada, and ive tested youtube hd and it is a little laggy, im curious to see if this improves after a ram upgrade.
i currently dont run a antivirus scan regularly so im not to sure about scan times.
Could this netbook handle any gaming? I fly quite a bit for work and would enjoy being able to play some Madden or Tiger 08....or even some of the older Clancy games.
I would like to see how older games such as Unreal Tournament, UT2k4, Diablo 2, maybe even Counter-Strike (not source), DoD, games of that fashion maybe Quake 3. I do plan on using it for light gaming with old favorites no expectations for highend modern gaming. I have mine shipping out Monday with an external cd-rom ($20) just wanted to get a quick gaming glimpse
Also, awesome reviews of this amazing machine. After watching your vids I no longer hesitated to go out and get one. Thanks
Nice one mate, I'm actually considering getting this baby over the other netbooks. I bought my girlfriend the Acer Aspire one and it's ok since she uses it for minor purposes. I think with an upgrade of 2GB of ram it's be super for a minimal netbook with good battery. Cheers...
Thanks for showing the video. I will be buying this soon; and am wondering how to dual-boot without an external drive. Is it possible? Thanks in advance.
i have a samsung se-s084 and it works great because it is entirely usb powered and you do not have to muck around with a power source for the cd. i would recommend this unit.
What kind of camera did you use for the reviews? I find your angle really smart positioned but am having a hard time visualizing the camera where it's had with your hands free!
Great video mate. I live in Vancouver and I ordered mine off ebay in the US because they had free shipping and before I found out NCIX had it... Now I'm kicking myself. I paid $388 which works out to over $490 Canadian and it's still sitting in Seattle until my family delivers it to me Friday but I can't wait! Already have the 2 gig RAM chip ready to go!
this is something that the windows 7 install disc does. if on a machine with hardware that is not as advanced it uses the old vista boot screen, but when on some higher end hardware it uses the new windows 7 boot. I used the same install disc for my desktop and the eee and got two different boot screens.
check out my videos.... see if it can handle &fmt=18, &fmt=35, and &fmt=22.
Also, make sure it's running at the full 1.66GHz when testing it out....I'm thinking of getting one of these but I want to know how well it handles all YouTube formats (and netflix).
i removed the fan question by accident, but yes the fan is a little louder then i would like but nothing too bad, its tolerable and you can only hear it after it revs up after a bit of use
that sux that you dont get hulu. thanks a lot though. my gateway edge just took a shit and i have a pretty nast desktop sooo was looking for a new laptop. the battery life might sell me alone.
i got it from microsoft when they had the public beta, im not sure if you can still get it or not, but it can be found in the usual places that host things like that cough torrent cough
the thing with the msi wind is that is slimmer and has a better design but other than that, as jeff said the processor is better in the HE, battery life is like 3 or 4 more hours, and also the touchpad has the srcolling with two fingers and the zooming in and out, which is somehting to consider in a netbook because of the small screen...
GN40 uses more power so you wont get the great battery life. Its a choice between battery life and graphics. If you want the battery life, get this, but if you want graphics, wait.

Try to install the Vista ACPI drivers to make the Volume Keys work. Just google "Vista ACPI fix eee pc"
If i remember doing it right it has to do with downgrading the recommended chipset driver.

And maybe do some 3D tests? (on older games of course)

Nice review dude. I just ordered a blue one today and also bought the 2gb ram chip. With shipping and tax it came out to $398. What a great price!
