i think it comes down to slashing vs piercing. a thin blade like she used won't be very good to make a slashing attack which is what she was doing. a long thin blade would be ideal for thrusting in between scales however.

falling from that height onto a broken wooden beam would probably create enough force to drive the sharp end in between the scales and impale her.

alternatively, the main character could have just used a thrusting attack at an eye, mouth or heart.
