My father served with the 3rd marine division signal corp and was on a ship near the base of surabachi and could see the flag flying from where he was. He had fought on bouganville and guam and was near deaf by the time iwo came, So he stayed on board ship and helped out with the radio equiptment. He sailed back to guam and was shipped to hawaii for medical care. He didn't talk much about the pacific war. Alot of pain i am just now realizing the full affect it had onim and other's.
