  • I saw the movie. The song was there.

  • I have to say, I disagree with a load of the comments on here! Firstly, The Producers movie was a great adaptation. It managed to keep all the charm of the Broadway show, with all the community in-jokes etc, which I think is why it didn't appeal to some critics and a more mainstream audience. And secondly, while this is a great number and it works very well on stage, I think it would have made the beginning of the movie drag a bit and the way it was done in the final cut worked very well. Just

  • There was a time...when I played the Phantom of the Opera?

  • Question:who do you have to f*** to get a break in this city?

    Answer: little old ladies:)

  • I wish they kept this song in the movie, if only for the nun at 4:54

  • He makes it sound SO easy. As though he didn't have to put in thousands of hours to sing so well. It seems like he just came on set after reading the lyrics and started singing. It seems so effortless.

  • My school is putting on the producers :D

  • i love that half way through they all start to dance a hora! good old mel brooks!

  • Oddly enough.. Neither did he. Gold!

  • Гениальный Мюзикл на ВСЕ ВРЕМЕНА!

  • "There was a time when I was young and gay...,but straight." hahaha

  • Why was this cut from the movie? It goes straight to the heart of Nathan Lane's character! Not to mention the fact it's funny as Hell!

  • @ztslovebird I guess it was just too "Broadway"... Pun intended.

  • this was very boring. I am glad it was cut.

  • " Maxela, ALLAMENCHA MUSINACHEN, HEY MU KAKA TASHIN PIPPIKACHEN!!" "What does that mean?" "I don't know, I don't speak Yiddish. Strangely enough, neither did he!"

  • Why did the producer of this film cut out this number? It's a critical scene that sets the tone for the whole musical. Was the producer trying to get the film to be a flop?

    ...oh... never mind.

  • They should've kept this scene. It was the most Broadway stage reasonable of all the scenes :(

  • Lane at his finest.

  • "WHO DO YOU HAVE TO F**K, TO MAKE IT IN THIS STINKIN' TOWN?!" So true, Nathan; so true!! AWESOME SONG!!!!

  • The director in the commentary track stated "It was with a heavy heart I cut the King Of Broadway number from the movie because it seemed were repeating information and it seemed more impactful to have Max's first appearance be dishevled when he meets Leo." Personally, I disagree because the set up is still there with Max holding the newspaper (though we don't realize its him reading the paper). Thankfully this song is still in the deleted scenes on the DVD. Nathan is the king of Broadway.

  • Magnificent!

  • god he's so awesome.

  • Nathan is a GOD!

  • I love Love Nathan Lane so much. He is so handsome and charming. I have a crush on Nathan Lane really bad. Nathan has such a wonderful singing voice. I love you so much Nathan Lane.

  • @MichaelBublesGirl27 I had a crush on him, too, for a while. Then I found out he was gay. I wasn't really surprised, but still, it was a little sad. Oh well.

  • omg i LOVE Nathan Lane. so funny

  • Should not have been deleted ! Damn it !!!

  • I wonder why at 4:17 the policeman has his cap on but its gone from his head at 4:22. Almost looks like a frame is missing.

  • the movie had many problems. Taking out the best song was but just one of them

  • I wish they hadn't cut this amazing song!

  • nathan lane is perfect!!!

  • I always thought this movie was a HUGE missed opportunity. I liked it but it could have been amazing. I think the problem lies with the director who had never directed a film before but had directed the show and did it as such. The film has very little visual style as far as the camera is concerned and lags behind with films like Guys and Dolls while films like Chicago push forward.

  • @SockMonkey007 I think the film doesn't use the camera tricks because it was choreographed with surgical precision and it would therefore be detrimental to do so, the audience would have missed out on the performers expertise. Reality TV dance competitions use all of these camera tricks (to the point where you vomit) to help cover-up the crap and make it more interesting. ‘The Producers’ had no need to.

  • @SockMonkey007 yet guys and dolls is still a very famous and respected movie. personally it's one of my favorites due to the acting and singing. not everything is good because of fancy camera tricks and lack of true expertise in the field

  • This always reminds me of something else but I can't think what :S haha

Great song tho :) i love Nathan Lane :)

  • This great video pretty much sums up M. Night Shyamalan's career.

  • @Hectorferjr2 No, there is a difference: Max was good at one point.

  • @DementisXYZ your right.

  • I can see philosoraptor asking "Who DO you have to fuck to get a break in this stinking town?"

  • One of the best lines in the musical:

"There was a time when I was young and gay...but straight!"

Makes me laugh every single time.

  • Musicals: professional flash mobs.

  • @clarinetchum Love it :) nicking it btw lol! :)

  • This is the wonderul absurdity of musicals incarnate. Every person in close proximity to the lead just randomly bursts into song along with him. The nun, the cop, the milkman, the construction worker, they're all so random but so well-defined.

  • Best. Thing. Ever.

  • Mbabii23/Latetothepartyreview: Oh, cool.

  • Haha, sounds like (I've never seen the movie, maybe is the same actor) Timon

  • @BlackZero98 He is.

  • @BlackZero98 it is the same actor

  • They should not have deleted this scene.

  • I love this song because it defines Broadway.

  • Watch the other versions of this song on youtube, then watch this version and what you notice is that this guy has superior breathing technique. A lot of the other versions, the singer loses the beat because he runs out of breath at a bad time.

  • Were they doing the horah at one point? This was such a hilarious scene! Why would they cut it?? :(

  • There a lot of extremely talented blue collar and poor folks on the streets of Broadway!

  • This song really reminds me of M. Night Shyamalan alot. Who used to be the King of Twist.

  • I just realized....Nathan just said "fuck" in front of nun. TWO nuns. *snicker*

  • Saw this musical with Roger Bart (Carmen Ghia) playing Leo Bloom. I still have yet to see the movie version, and it's killing me.

  • One of my favorite films of all time. Nathan Lane is the best! Its a shame they cut this scene from the movie.

  • @randomheroine maybe because of the F___ word...

  • @scorpioninpink ...and? I've seen several PG-13 movies that dropped the F-bomb once or twice.

This isn't exactly a movie you'd want your small kids to watch...with or without this scene. :p

  • I'm a big fan of ALW musicals, but i've laughed more in this 5 minutes than any of ALW's shows.

  • this film is so "jewish" thanks mel!

  • @tearmann I was wondering why it reminded me so much of Fiddler on the Roof. The dancing, the fiddler on the roof. Ironic.

  • I liked this song! >< Why didn't they leave it in the movie? I mean just an extra 5 minutes is no big deal.

  • In the commentary, it was explained that this song was cut because this song and the scene that follows after pretty much convey the same information, which may be fine on stage, but it would've held the film up if they'd left it in.

  • Nathan Lane *swoon*

  • Fiddler on the Roof reference FTW.

  • Too bad this was a deleted soong, it's my fave XD

  • Nathan Lane is incredible. No other way to explain him

  • did they put it back in to the movie? this is one of the best song just because nathan says fuck!

  • Is this after the trial?

  • @Mad4john Its imediatly after "Opening Night".

  • @neilo86 ahh thanks for clearing that up!

  • This is a fantastic number. Can't imagine what was going through the director's head leaving this out. I guess it was too soon after "Opening Night," but it's so funny the audience would have forgiven it.

  • This is one of the best songs in the whole musical so WHY DID THEY LEAVE IT OUT?!?! *bursts into tears*

Nathan Lane is great, by the way.

  • "WHO DO YOU HAVE TO FUCK TO GET A BREAK IN THIS STINKIN TOWN??!!"

  • This should hae been in the movie in place on Betrayed. It adds more, it sets up the perfect tone for the rest of the movie, and it sums up broadway perfectly.

  • I love musicals! Where else can you find back-flipping nuns? XD

  • This is my favorite song ever

  • I DID!!!

  • Can anyone understand what Nathan Lane is saying at 3:01? I only have a tiny smuttering of Yiddish.

  • @VirgilwithanE So you don't speak Yiddish? I'm Jewish, strangely, enough, neither do I. ;)

  • @hollywoodsevil707 Wanna be friends? lol

  • @VirgilwithanE Invited you.

  • @VirgilwithanE Maxella, alle menschen muss zu machen, jeden tug a gentzen kachen

i think it means something about all honorable muslims say something im not sure what though cos the program i used didn't recognise the rest :(

  • @05tewkesburye Thanks man, I didn't think I'd even get a response!

  • I love this movie, so great. Nathan Lane is a genius

  • I have no idea why critics panned this movie, as someone who also saw and really loved the musical on the stage, I thought it tranisitoned wonderfully to the screen.

Tied for Sweeny Todd for my favorite musical.

  • I AGREE!!!!!!!

  • @davidssabb94 They probably didn't like it because it was a remake.

  • @davidssabb94 same with me :-)

  • I'm not really a big fan of musicals, but The Producers was one of the most enjoyable and entertaining movies that I've ever seen. Great stuff.

  • i love this song it was actually the first song i heard from the producers and it made me wana watch it lol but im pretty sure they cut it because its more of a stage musical number it kinda dsnt really go well on film

  • I love this movie, but this is the funniest scene. It's too bad they axed this in the film.

  • Why the hell did they delete it from the movie?

  • -The F bomb. If they deleted that scene with the swear, they could set the movie as PG-13.

Either that or they needed to limit the time.

  • The best part of this scene is Max's utterly pathetic "I DID" right after the chorus sings, "There was a time he wore the finest clothes!"

  • who do you have to f*** to get a break in this stinking town. lol awesome

  • "... "Everybody is dead. Thet were the lucky ones.' That's the best review we got."

  • @MoonyMidnight still better than twilight....

  • I always love this song because it's the opposite of Nathan! Nathan is the KING of Broadway and ALWAYS be!

  • This was my favorite song in the Musical, and the scene would've made the whole movie seem meatier.

  • @TheShoeOfMattie

    Absolutely right.

  • @TheShoeOfMattie The only reason why they took this song out is because they were actually thinking of nixing it entirely. Because the song was actually *TOO* good.

They realized the problem of having a showstopper as the very first song. How the hell do you top this, you know?

  • nathan lane is the greatest!!!

  • there was a time when i was young and gay.. and strait rofl

  • there was a time when i was bold haha

  • Nathan Lane is so BEST! :D

  • Great song and routine, shame they cut it!

  • could you upload the whole movie? I have only seen it filmed from a screen -.-

  • The music department at my school had gone to see this, and when he said "Who do ya have to fuck to get a break in this stinkin' town?" EVERYONE gasped in shock. It was fantastic!!! I just about died of laughter, it was too good!! Nathan Lane made this role, he really did. He is just way too good!!

  • they didnt cut it. i saw the producers live a couple of months ago and they included this song.

  • it was cut from the movie

  • That is the theatre version, it is entirely different from the movie.

  • this is from the movie only it was cut from the theretical release, it is however viewable from the deleted scenes on the Producers DVD

  • What a great song!

Damn, why did they cut it? =(

  • In the play, it introduces the character.

In the movie, the plot introduces the character better.

it was a dumb idea, but they needed to shorten the movie.

They had an awesome scene with Ernie Sabella (Pumbaa), but they had to cut that too...

  • Yep... the best scenes are, unfortunately, those, which have to be cut.

I didn't ever see the scene, where Timon and Pumbaa are reunited (well, at least their voices =D), is it on YouTube?

  • I can't find it. I own the DVD, so i saw it there. Wish I could find it, I lost the dvd. :-P

But it's the bar scene during springtime for hitler (remember in the 60's version?).

Nathan and Matthew are drinking to their success, and Ernie played the drunk.

It was gonna happen before the line "I was just a paper hanger." now that scene looks like a useless cut. :-(

  • Aah, after the "Let's get out of here, before they kill us"? =D

I saw the movie on DVD, but it was just rented by a friend of mine. Can't find the DVD in the shops around here, I'll have to order it :<

  • After Let's get out of here, but in the middle of Roger's long part.

    After "Heil Myself"

    ~4:45 in this video WCUfkMkVbwo

  • Whate are they saying wen he is on the Trash can? poor what?

  • They're saying 'Poor Bialy'...that's his nickname from Max Bialystock

  • Thanks

  • It's to bad they had to cut this. It works great for a live show, but in a movie you need to get to the point faster. This whole scene just kind of delays the actual story.

  • Oh man, why did they have to cut out the dancing from 3:30 to 4:03 they shouldv'e added it in the credits somewhere, somehow. Really love that dance.

  • Lol,

"I don't know, I don't speak Yiddish. Strangley enough, neither did he."

  • lol @ "Who do ya have to FUCK to get a break in this stinkin' town??? "

  • i wish they kept this in.

    i love this song.

  • i know, right?

  • ...young and gay, but straight? LOL. He's really gay in "real" life. Nonetheless, he's adorable and completely talented.

  • Nathan You Rock!

  • real shame they had to cut this one!

    i love it.

nathan looks so happy on the instrumental 2, there all having so much fun. the work that went into this! and the music arrangment to just cut it!

its a better entrance for max i think, i ilke how on the dvd you see how it goes to this from 'opening night' and it makes sense when you see the guy in opening night reading the news paper...must be max! cause you only see his hands.

    Brilliant song :)

  • There was a time when I was young and gay, but straight. ^_^

  • gay doesnt mean just homosexual

  • Yeah...I kinda knew that since I was a wee little tot. It's okay, I'm sure somebody in the world doesn't know. I bet you'll find him someday.

  • yeah means that he was like happy or some thing

  • lol 1:52 haha

  • Great Nathan!!! Love this song!! Especially the running part!!

  • I heard this in the stage production. It's a pity they had to cut it...

  • No, there was the astor bar, a few extra pieces of songs, and a game of hide and seek between Max and Hold-me-Touche-Me

  • i cant beileve they cut ' oh our debits are the evening' in i wanna be a producer, it was only like another 15secs!

and that black guy was brilliant at it.

and i love the clarinet solo 2

  • No that's Jim Borstelmann, he also plays Scott the Choreographer (Guy with the huge bulge in "Keep it gay" and the guy who wings "The little wooden boy"

  • What is he saying exactly when he speaks in Yiddish?

Makseleh, alle menschen müssen machen... ?

  • Maxim, alle...

    (Max Bialystock)

  • does anyone know what song this is ripping off? i swear i've heard this tune before.

  • It's not ripping anything off.

  • It sounds familiar tho. the tune i mean. and the bit of "The biggest bathroom at the ritz" bit

  • Hey does anyone notice the poster of Funny Boy- Hamlet with the skull, and Hamlet here looks a lot like Johny Depp as Ichabod Crane or Sweeney Todd?

  • love the nuns.

  • Admittedly I'm not much of a fan of musicals, but The Producers is irresistable in every way. It is the epitome of what entertainment is all about. It puts a smile on your face, warms the heart, and reminds us to enjoy life.

  • why did they cut this from the movie?

  • Stopped the flow of the action...movie is fairly long as it is, and it is a movie version of the show, not a filming of the show. It sucks, but it happens. Some of the best songs are cut.

  • "fuck" was used in a term to get an r rating

  • The "Flow of the action" excuse shouldn't apply to movie musicals... it never did in the classics like "Singin' in the Rain".

  • The main reason was the purpose of this song was to set what Max is, how he is a nothing now and stuff, but in the movie they were able to extend the dialogue. Basically it made this song moot. I love this song though, but oh well.

  • it's about damn time somebody made a english version of this...haha i saw this on stage and it was great, it is so much better to see the movie version of it. Thank you!!

  • I can't belive they cut this from the movie! I LOVE this song, i have it stuck in my head all the time

  • there was a time when i was young and gay...but straight. ha ha

  • Geez why did they cut this out! Its genious!!!

  • WHO DO YOU HAVE TO FUCK TO GET A BREAK IN THIS STINKING TOWN ....LOL great line

  • I heard that they cut this out because they thought they were repeating details about how great max used to be. But I do agree that it's one of the best numbers.

  • too bad they cut this out

  • Great number. Amazing Coreography, beutiful harmonies, amazing actors, and they cut it. Talk about class A dumbasses.

  • Best part of the whole movie and it was cut

  • aw i like this song!

  • It's good to be the king
