Storys Behind the Lost Levels:

1. Wood Zone

Not sure how that went down, it was a nice zone. one theory was that there were too many levels in sonic 2, and that they had to take some out. ones that sonic team wasnt fond of the design and dumped it.

2. Hidden Palace Zone

this is CONFIRMED!!! : It was ORIGINALY to be in Sonic 2. NOT CONFIRMED: i think that its because they thought of knuckles and the master emerald so, they moved it, and re-designed it.

7.Genocide City Zone: It was meant to be a single level which used the map that ultimately became Metropolis Zone Act 3. Concept art of it has been released revealing that the level's name was originally Cyber City. Due to the level being mechanically themed, instead of grim and deadly as the name implied, the theory that this magazine clip referenced the boss of Genocide City seems unlikely.

6.Rock Zone: This level was planned as the "past" version of Dust Hill Zone, but the idea of time travel was dropped and the level was never implemented the game.

First of all these levels were only scrapped, not deleted. And second:

1. Wood Zone is very unfinished: in the Simon Wai prototype, the first act ends rather quickly, and the second act is simply an empty level slot with a palette. It shares music with Metropolis Zone.

2. 0:26 was suposed to be Winter zone. It was supposed to reuse many recolored graphics taken from Dust Hill Zone, but with the desert elements replaced by christmas trees.

Shame the other levels were never fleshed out. I'd love to see Sega do a "Sonic 2 COMPLETE" or something, with everything they had originally planned put back in.
