  • I think the SD-1 kills it. :)

  • I have a SD-1 and I like it more than others pedals (for this money)

  • Dude learn how to equalize them first

  • sd-1 is much more clean...

  • this is fake

  • the volume of the Bad Monkey is too low

  • Great demo...I own the SD1 and at first I hated overdrive pedals. Most of my amps are tube driven. Now I use it to boost my dirt pedal in my Dime head and the combination is amazing. I like the Digitec Bad Monkey pedal I don't own one but I own a Jam man by Digitec and their stuff is as good as Boss products. If I need another set up for my other amp I would get the BM for sure...

  • Bad monkey, alot better. IMHO. I own both. But the Bad Monkey is more similar to the Xotic Effects BB Preamp than the tubescreamer. The SD-1 is more like the tubescreamer.

  • Both sound similar but the Boss has that extra clean boost which makes it superior. I have the SD-1 and love it. If you have tube amp and just want an uncolored boost, it can do that too by turning the gain down to 1 or 2 and raising the level!

  • Boss is the boss

  • just like another vid i just saw, boss pedals are the choice if you're using solid state.

  • I have both, and the SD-1 is way better. There's no comparison really. I just keep the Bad Monkey around because it sounds good on bass.

  • lol the knobs arent prob even same

  • @rrgert4 lol your eyes isn't even working properly

  • That's not proper way to compare two NON-TRUE-BYPASS pedals!

  • can this work on a solid state, or am i gonna waste money if i buy one?

  • BTW are you using a tube amp or a solid state amp? It sounds solid state to me, those don't have the same sonic characteristics of a tube amp so comparing these pedals that are designed to push tube amps on a solid state amp is like test driving a Porche while in park...

  • @FollowChristJesus Well, technically I was using a Line 6 UX2 Studio with an emulated Fender Bassman, which gives a very realistic tube tone, but then I was using a Fender Frontman 25r (which is solid state) for my output speaker, which is was you're hearing, so I guess you could say that it is tube and solid state, haha!

  • @machogriz Even though it's a solid state amp, I think you did a pretty good job demoing at the 3 main settings most people would want (no gain, full gain) and seeing how the EQ worked.

Still hard for me to pick one. Only real difference I see is the Bad Monkey has more volume / boost on tap.

  • @Crunchifyable Thanks!

  • Boss SD-1 Gets me excited cause its got some stank on it... It sounds nice and gritty!

  • the SD-1 seems louder when the level on both pedals is at noon

  • hey does any one know if these are any good with solid state amp

  • sd1 good ๆ

  • sd-1, way more musical

  • BOSS THE KING BABY

  • most guitar players own both of these.

  • bad Monkey, reason is that I think it sounds more transparent. I want the higher gain sounds to still sound like my amp. Sd1 sounds harsh and colors the sound a little much, JMHO

  • boss is more agressive while bad monkey is smoother.

  • I have them both!!!

The SD-1 sounds best with my SG, as it sounds a tad more aggressive.

The Bad Monkey sounds great with my Telecaster, taming the piercing highs with its mid-boost and highly effective EQ knobs.

Both pedals are amazing (especially in that price class), but the BM would be the best choice as a clean booster.

  • @ec101dm Which one would add some volume and sustain on an OD channel for solos , a decent volume boost

  • @gravano2 the Bad Monkey would clearly be the best choice here! It has much more volume on tap than the SD-1.

  • @ec101dm Thank you , have to order online - GC has it for 49 bucks

  • @gravano2 have a look at eBay, you can find it even for a bit cheaper that way.

  • @ec101dm Good idea thanks

  • @ec101dm 1 more before I order , what do you think of the boss os-2 ?

  • @gravano2 I've never tried that one, sorry.

  • @gravano2 i have an sd-1 dual stacked (with a tubescreamer chip inside it too) and a stock os-2. i love both at different times

  • @Schpudd You are right , I just bout the boss dual overdrive i I love the fact I can remote it and have 2 pedals - thanks - the bad monkey will have to wait

  • The dang vol level don't match! The Monkey is to low!..or the Bad boy will blow BOSS away..

  • Boss - a cheap boss pedal is always good - i love this and i use it a lot with my bass

  • i would use both

i have, and they work together as really gd boosting pedals :) seriously they could be gay together or something cause they are really gd pedals work together :)

  • You can get a Bad Monkey for cheaper.

Also, I honestly can barely hear ANY drive on both pedals. Turn your amp up and try again.

  • @OtherRealmer That's not true... in fact, they're roughly the same price, with the SD-1's coming in cheaper on average. and @paqman78 I think Boss pedals are relatively inexpensive for the good quality. For example, as said, the bad monkey and SD-1 are about the same price... but do equally as good a job. The Boss PS-6 does a immensely better job at harmonizing and has all the same features and more than the Digitech Whammy, yet the Boss is £50 less.

  • @TheCharliePearce Oh? apparently need to start shopping at other places than my local store, cause a Boss SD1 is 10 bucks more expensive than a Digitech there.

Granted it's not much, but it might make a difference.

Also, I've had the luck to try these pedals both at once - Match made in heaven if you use both on about half gain.

  • @OtherRealmer I'm not denying the quality of Digitech pedals, I mean, I own a Whammy, yet honestly think the PS-6 is better... and I'm sure that would be awesome, nothing wrong with collaboration!

I never buy pedals from shop, at least none around me, they overprice pedals sooooo much it's unbelievable. It can also change if the store has better relations with a certain brand et cetera...

  • @TheCharliePearce I don't remember ever saying you were saying digitech is bad.

I would buy pedals from the Internet, but for one the shipping prices would actually make it more expensive in my case, and in the store I can try stuff out.

  • Makes you sound more like an tube amp right??

  • the boss sound, the bad monkey seems to eat little sound but not a lot.

  • the sd is for me :d

  • i can hear the actual strings on your guitar on the camera mic overpowering the amp

  • SD-1

  • boss is the boss

  • BadMonkey

  • Monkey go home

  • you use an overdrive pedal with your amps gain, worthless video

  • @theendofacircle Try again. Overdrives CAN be used like that (to put the gain over the top) but stand alone they can make for good effects. Especially if you're into blues or rock 'n roll (not hard rock.)

  • Gain please..

  • Someone can help me ?

I need opinions about these two pedals ... I Want to buy one of them , but i'm very confused ... What's the best ? My favourite styles of music are Rock , Metal , Blues , Punk , Grunge etc ... And my favourite guitarists are John 5 and Jimi Hendrix ... I would like to play something like his sounds ...

Thanks ! (and sorry for my bad english)

  • @scratbrito and my guitar is an IBANEZ ART 80 :)

  • @scratbrito I'm running both and they really play nice together. I run the SD-1 mostly for a driven sound, in tandem, it's over the top, chunky and crunchy great lead sound.

  • Bad monkey is the best xD

  • the monkey sounds like a waste of budget, may as well gut your wah pedal so it only works half as well as its supposed to as well. Boss all the way or both, but the monkey on its own is useless

  • @TheLydianRocks Wat?

  • what song is @5:00 ?? anyone ..

  • @hoodiey Falling in Love Again by Jack Thammarat

  • @9sec got confused...

  • bad monkey..

  • bad monkey sounds more dry then the sd-1

  • You should have level matched them, imo .

  • i have the boss it works for me but i want to have the monkey too

  • i got bad monkey :):)

  • Thanks for cutting all the shit and getting to the playing.

  • No way.... The Bad Monkey sounds horrible. But I've heard its one of the best affordable pedal.

  • Maybe if the amp were louder we could actually hear the pedals and decide which one we like...

  • Its a gread demo. Can you do another demo but now whit higher volumes please?

  • Why de bad monkey cable is one to the and othr to effect?? :O

  • dont let we hear the acoustic sound of guitar

  • What boss/roland charger you using?

  • im not sure about that which one is better...

  • I think I prefer the Boss SD-1

  • Good comparison.

  • Cheers for this mate. I like reviews like this. No talking nonsense, just some notes bashed out with both units.

    Good work.

  • bad monkey is warmer?

  • The Bad Monkey's low are really awesome. SD1 is fine, but there is too much trebles and the mids are not very good. However, two nice pedals to have! Thanks for the video

  • Which one is better for stacking with amp overdrive? And does anyone of those two sound good when stacked with Boss DS-1?

  • Hard to say one is "better" than the other. They both sound different. But if had to choose only one it would be the Bad Monkey. It sounded a little more thick and rich to me.

  • perfect way to END the video (o:

  • SD-1 is LOUDER

  • Bad Monkey.....I have one and it is great

  • Plug them both together that´s it.Thank you.

  • Once you started moving the low and high knobs on BM it totally dominated.

  • i use overdrive on my amp and sd-1 and it sounds so heavy and great

  • can you run the bad monkey through a boss psa?

  • @InspiringWear yes, that works

  • Bad Monkey is better...for me.

  • People don't buy the bad monkey. Digitech pedals fuck tone like crazy when bypassed. Also, you can actually MOD the SD-1 in 20 ways. Whatever

  • I love the Bad Monkey! and i think that the Bad Monkey is better because it have a bigger EQ, and you can have the sound that you want. Boss pedals are great, but a little bit overpriced, Digitech is cheaper where i live, and that makes all the difference!

  • Bad Monkey is better for Stones style riffs I see, maybe better for blues. The Super Overdrive sounds smoother, probably would be good for searing rock leads. I'm trying to decide what overdrive to use for leads after a Maxon pro+9. I want something smooth sounding that will cause harmonic feedback to build up during soloing. I might choose the Super Overdrive, but is the Japanese version much different than recent ones?

  • Nice comparison. Bad monkey sounds more dynamic, natural. It could probably do better for bluesier sounds. Stones beast or burden riff sounded way better with Bad Monkey. Super overdrive sounds smoother. I'm looking for a pedal for lead tones from a mid-rangey Marshall w/junior setup. I think for what I need the Super Overdrive would be better judging by this. Thanks.

  • you should have busted out foxey lady after you built the feedback near the end

  • The SD-1 has more presence and definition. The Bad Monkey is one of the worst overdrives I've tried. It doesn't have enough high end.

  • iv used both and i prefer the bad monkey

  • sd1 kills the mad monkey with a poisoned banana

  • i prefer sd1

  • Bad Monkey FTW. Boss pedals are ridiculously overvalued.

  • @paqman78 Boss sucks

  • @paqman78 no more FTW

  • @paqman78

Actually the BOSS SD-1 at $39 sells $10 cheaper than the Bad Monkey. So, THIS particular Boss pedal is not overvalued by any means.

  • @paqman78 The Boss is in the same price bracket, these pedals are only slightly different anyway. I don't get where your getting your rational for this is? In all honesty they are really barely different pedals.

  • the sound of the strings is louder than the amp i cant tell the difference

  • Sounds good but is there something wrong with the bad monkey? With your settings I get much more of a volume boost that what you are getting when you step on the BM.

  • Yeah! I just loves video like this... Camera focusing enough on the knobs, showing pedal's configuration and player playing the same phrase on both pedals.

  • I have a Boss SD-1 and let me tell you, it is a tone sucking bag of crap, I really can't think that the Bad Monkey could possibly be worse, save your money and buy a real high end pedal

  • @satjathamma That's not true. The Bad Monkey is one of the most transparent pedals you have out there. I own one. Great pedal for its price. Quite an underrated pedal too.

  • Thanks for the video¡ I decided i buy the boss

  • Ha...If you Drag through the Video fast the pedals run away from him...

  • @Rockendentalist I just laughed for ages at this.

  • sd-1.

  • both are good, but I prefer the bad monkey for me, it gives more types of sounds and it sounds better with a some gain =D

  • hmm, both sound good, but i think the bad monkey sounds a bit better while playing with high gain, so i'll go with the bad monkey

  • A Danelectro Cool Cat Transp.OD is a better choice than both of 'em if you ask me.

  • that's the good of being bad!

  • what do you like best? I think the sd1 is more articulated and has more dynamics

  • Try an original 90's Marshall Blues Breaker1 and your search is over!!!

  • i prefer the boss sd-1 better also cuz i had it modded by 2 companies from analog man and keeleys so now i have 2 special toggle switches =p but still i prefer sd-1 its a very versatile pedal for me =]

  • the bosssss!!

  • is that journey?

  • i think i prefer the bad monkey

  • Great shoot out man! Keep up the good work! Great playing BTW. Cheers

  • What are the song's

  • The bad monkey is smoother, but it chops the high end a bit, while the sd-1 has more definition and cuts through the mix better. Also, the sd-1 seems to have more clean boost ( level ) on tap. Bad monkey might be better for rythm stuff while sd-1 would probably be better for lead or solo work.

  • both great pedals at a great price - the Bad Monkey is a tad 'smoother' in its tone

  • sd-1

  • I mean really... one out of every thousand is gonna take this guitar stuff and get famous. i as a guitarist, which yes am one of those thousand that are crap, just want something good enough to get the job done. Boss vs. Digitech in general...... digitech all the way...

  • I'm sold on the Bad Monkey. It really is the tone knobs and the warmer, more natural tube sound. The Boss is great though, a tad more synthetic, but not much.

  • at first i was all DS-1 but then at about 3:09 when the SD-1 was at a higher volume it was just fuzzy sounding besides the cameras natural fuzz (: ... while the Bad Monkey is still winner to me but the SD-1 is very cheap. i still stick with the Bad Monkey Tube Overdrive Effects Pedal.

  • i think the monkey's got the versatility but, to me the boss is a bit less boxy, more organic and clear but, also a tad brighter (clarity there i guess). Odd too cuz i don't like Boss at all and lean toward digitech AND own the monkey but, i think i may pick up the boss too.

  • I want to buy BM. I first saw it when Phil X played on it. I did research and it's very cheap, but very good pedal too.

  • Any comment on these sorts of comparisons is entirely subjective and can have no relevance to anyone else's opinion since we all have our individual preferences and auditory equipment (ears) but for what it's worth I can see why some guitarists say the bad monkey is the one pedal they can't live without - it has that very seductive 'on heat' huskiness in its voice. And - yes- it's only a green box but it looks good too, dunnit?

  • The SD-1 sounds much more organic to me. The Bad Monkey has this cheap, "square", almost fuzz-like tone to it.

  • @YofterMofter Fudge you

  • i use the sd 1 for gain boost on my solos, the bad monkey sounds pretty good too, digitech makes good stuff

  • I use both of these pedals. The monkey for my dirty rythm and I have both on for solos or heavy rythm songs.

  • first of all ,thanks! j have to say it !the digitech bad monkey surprised me! not bad not bad!

    now j'm confuse!

  • In the beginning of the video the sd-1 was my favorite, but after you began to play with the high and low on the bad monkey it was a serious winner! XD

  • next time turn your amp on.

  • the sd1 shines through a tube amp set right before breakup.

  • Would be nice if you miced more amp and less of your guitar..

  • the bad monkey has more abilitys +++

    stands on a cable ---

    green looks better +++

this bossound was ever awfull and for the coffin of more level, it eats more batteries

  • Hello... To me the monkey have a more "tube amp" tone... I think it has a warmer and also "calm" sound... Obviously this not means that it sound better in every setting, neither that it is a better pedal... but I feel that in this test is a best "tube screamer"...

  • what i wanna know is if you can get eric johnsons tone with those instead of that fucking 300 dollar bk buttlar

  • i still think the sd-1 is better. it has more potential

  • can your amp be any quiter?

  • can you make some heavy riffs? i need to hear it... like audioslave sounds

  • to the dude who said the ds-1 is the best pedal ever... your on crack, the ds-1 doesnt sound half decent til you mod the hell out of it

  • BM sounds like ass!

  • Bad Monkey, because the eq. But mostly because it sounds better.

  • The Bad Monkey sounds a lot more like a tube amp breaking up IMO. It also seems to have much less volume at 12 o'clock. It sounds much better than the Sd-1 at higher gain settings - thanks for the vid, you've helped make my mind up!

  • at the beginning i liked the boss, but by the end i prefered the bad monkey

  • I felt the exact same way when I was recording the video!

  • @machogriz I bought the monkey 2 days ago :D should be here tommorow if the postal service doesnt balls up on me over xmas >_>

cant waiiiitttt... just need a better guitar now :<

nice comparrison, both are decent pedal's and affordable, but theres somthing in the BM's tone i love.

  • are you wearing uggs?

  • nope, they are actually slippers made by Nunn Bush, I think?

  • @machogriz dude, we have the same slippers. bad ass

  • @boxtrap21 haha I love these things! rock on!

  • @MrAlfredocolon whoa whoa.... got anything against uggs? haha.

  • @bigscaryboat nah just asking

  • ok im gonna go boss all the bas, its more together, but i would recommend 2 distortion pedals, sd-1 whichid use for boost, then DS-1 which is in my opinion one of the best distortion pedals ever. the md-2 is ok, i use it for more metally solos, but digitex is not my fav. i have their death metal pedal, and ill say, its great for metal, but they arnt great for rock

  • jack thammarat

  • boss all the way i mean he uses the bad monkey and theres like little to no change you can tell when he uses the boss sd 1 maybe if he would change the settings ppl could hear more of each pedel

  • Try messing with the Low control more on the Monkey...a lot of the settings you had had bass rolloff like the SD-1...sorry anyway I have the BM and it's pretty good, with the EQ it is very versatile.
