I would personally love to try this at least once in my life, however I've been flying collective pitch RC's for about a year now and don't believe one can take any of the characteristics or experience from rc's and tranfer that experience to the real thing.........Two totally different animals, theory stays the same, that's about it....Happy flying!
I wager I could do it in less.I say wager, what I really mean is,is there anyone dumb enough with a helicopter to let me try.Seriously though I think I could,Im just learning rc heli,im a natural at riding and driving anything and pick up things pretty quickly and im **** scared of heights,so would probably make a good pilot :)
A few doubters here. How many hours do you guys in the States have to do before going solo and getting your private and commercial licenses. Can go solo here in NZ 15-20hrs and license either 40 or 50hrs depending on whether you have a fixed wing license or not.
Plus flying the rc gives you steady fingers, flying this heli takes a steady but responsive wrist and coordination. they are two totally different. Just because u can fly the rc doesnt mean you can fly the real thing although the real thing is easier than the rc. I will say that
@davidmichaelc RC helis will give you an understanding of helicopter flight characteristics though and that can be applied to real helicopters as well.
Thats a crock of crap. I fly the R-22 and it takes much longer than 3 hours just to learn to hover. After 10 hours i started to find the hover button which took my instructor over 20 hours before he could. this is probably 3 hours into his solo flight. I hate liars
@davidmichaelc Just because you and most others can't do it doesn't mean nobody else can. Did it ever occur to you that someone else might just have a lot more talent and natural ability than you or your instructor???
@davidmichaelc I beleive it. Flying a TH-67 for 2 hours I had hovering down, not perfect but good enough to taxi and take-off and come in on approach and taxi to the parking. At about 6-7 hours I was landing and picking it off the ground.......and at 20 hours I had hovering down....Now how does a R-22 compare to a TH-67 I dont know.
The Robinson R-22 is a great rotary wing. I think you spent some time in the simulator before you tried this, or you fudged the numbers. Hell it took me 5 hours of simulator and 5 more of flight instruction to just keep it steady in one spot. Just keep it up and you will make 200 hours and sling load rating.
yes but i was thinking i was free flight after 3 hours to and i have been flying rc helis for 4 years but you can always feel the instructor in the peddles it was only 25 hours that he folded his arms and crossed his feet and said where are we going today, experience comes from time and situations confronted ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
3 hours of flight training? Not trying to be disrespectrul er anything like that, but i kinda find it very hard to believe. If so. . . . .congradulations & be safe. Yer at the point in life that i sure hope to be someday. Be safe & best of luck to ya.
What would your reccomendation be for someone looking to get some traning and any idea on what the cost will be. Thanks and It looked like a great take off to me !!
@shamrockcattleco depends on what you want to do and what kind of a license you want. If you just want a private pilots license, which allows you to pilot a helicopter and take a few friends up you're looking at a pilot's licence. Eventually, you'll want to add on a few additional certs, such as night flying, advanced controls. Aviation School Online is a great place to start. It's not complete but a good place to start. Just google it.
Me my dad and my sister got to fly a plane once over makinaw island. It was an amazing expieriance flying over the bridge, the oceans, and the grand hotel! I mean, dad knew how to start us off considering he's a pilot! IT WAS SOOO COOL! he said we might do it again sometime. WE EVEN DID ZERO GRAVITY! we got to see our video camera float in mid-air!
@motokid032 Theres a lot more involved in fly real Heli's. I fly rc, simulators and real r22. There is much more than just controlling them, control on the real one requires more understanding. colective up left pedal (r22) down right pedal. Then translational lift. The power curve, navigation, compass errors. So much more than one would believe. Its great to learn. I'm almost ppl (h) licensed.
I am very familiar with the workings and aerodynamics of a helicopter..The only think is that I don't have the money to be able to go for my commercial license.
In X-Plane, the sim, you are taught pretty well how everything works i.e VRS, SWP, translating tendency, torque effect, blowback in two bladed ships, blade stall..I know it's not a walk in the park but I can guarantee that from what I learned in THAT sim, I could get her up in a stable hover in under 5 minutes.
@motokid032 I tell you what you should do, take a trial lesson for an hour. When I had mine it was a suprize and I was taken up and learned attitude, straight and level flight, then when we retured to the field, I tried the hover. I done it straight away (model experience helped) but the feet were the bit I wan't used to. Its different from a sim. Dont forget the theory side. 7 written exams (ppl-h) level. Lots more and some affect the flight, Like navigation and compass errors. your love it.
I'd love to do it, I know I would have no problem with the man/machine part..The only thing that I am worried about is the airspace stuff, communication and mathematics!
@motokid032 I'm not sure exactly, you can pay as a full corse and also depends where in the world you are but try shoping around. It depends where you go, you could do just 20 mins maybe 30 mins or an hour. Its entirely up to you. Its worth the experience but its not going to be cheap. Your just be flying the machine on trial lesson. Did you know most of flying is pre-flight planing, weather, navigation, aircraft check, fuel and c of g. radio isn't too difficult when you know what to say.
really not trying to undermine ur flying or whatever man but im at 28 hours and in this vid i can see that your instructor is on the stick as well. i mean dont get me wrong its a good takeoff but your instructor is definitely helping you out there
@CNCmachiningisfun I fly RC Helicopters (also have 9hrs in a R22). Never met a full size only pilot who can fly my Trex 600 without a buddy lead - especially 'nose in'.
@CNCmachiningisfun That was my intent since before I started flying. I bought an RC model about a year before I started training in the real helicopters after I was told by my CFI that it was harder for him to fly model helis. It definitely paid off :)
I have always thought it would be great to see what it's like to operate a full sized chopper. My RC skills are pretty shaky, so it looks like a lot more practice is in order before I take the controls :) .
@paddyboyyy if you fly helicopters you will have an engine failure along your career, robinsons are ridiculously safe when flown by a competent person who knows what they are doing. Great job, don't let critics say otherwise, it took me less then an hour to hover and I solo'd in just over an hour in a Hiller with 15 kts of wind, a good instructor and a sharp student can go a long way...
It was very good hovering, 3 hours or 20. I'd feel more comfortable a couple of feet higher though - engine failures are much rarer than bumping into the ground.

I get the impression that it is easier to fly to real helicopter than it is to fly an RC model, as there is more sensory feedback in a real chopper.
