I think Mara is just a personification, not a actual physical person Siddhartha had these battles in his head. Like we all do during the normal course of our life (stress, losses, cravings). He use the personification to distance him self from these things, to make it seam as if it is done by someone else so that it becomes important for him to make a stand and fight for liberation (Nibbana)!

I think Mara is just a personification, not a actual physical person Siddhartha had these battles in his head. Like we all do during the normal course of our life (stress, losses, cravings). He use the personification to distance him self from these things, to make it seam as if it is done by someone else so that it becomes important for him to make a stand and fight for liberation (Nibbana)!

Mara was a holy spirit that dwell in the divine world and it's known as Devas Wielding Power over the Creation of Others (paranimmita-vasavatti deva). Deva means divine beings in Pali. Buddha taught in Pali.
Although Mara was a divine being, it has turned into an evil one due to delusion. Buddha taught that so long as one is not enlightened, one is capable of becoming evil.

Those visions are all true, but happens to most in small micro seconds, which thru the years we stop paying or giving them any attentions. Of course we'll fall for our dull delusional ego thoughts, ideas, concept thru out our lives. Please youthful teens, don't do drugs of any kind except recommended by Doctors. Zen schools is a great choice, just get an introductory lesson during winter months preferably. Even if you quit the practice after a while, you do learn some great Self lessons

@beaudashing Bad advice about drugs. I knew a guy who became dependent on his doctor prescribed medications and became very suicidal without his drugs (which he wasn't before). Comparing marijuana, hookah, salvia, etc to doctor prescribed drugs is silly for the doctor ones are for the greater part much worse.

@MoveOn25 because cinema is a business. These films were funded through a western, english speaking industry trying to reach a wide demographic. Nothing more complex than that. The casting for the most part has not been bad as they go- so far (with the exception of Keanu Reeves but he looks vacant so maybe that why is was cast, he could pull off that look of complete confusion and absence of anything simultaneously).

We are coming up to a funny time period in human history; this will bring the true enlightened, (sleepers), and charlatans out. Sleepers are of the young and old, some without knowing it. We have all a need to become enlightened to some degree; some will have to make the sacrifice to become more enlightened.

@godhater200 There is a difference between a spiritual awakening(and there are different levels) and Nirvana which is the highest state and was ONLY attained by GUATAMA BUDDHA and other Buddhas before him. Buddha himself said that the next person to attain Nirvana will be Maitreya, he is waiting in a heavenly realm and will be reborn on earth in the future where he will attain the highest enlightenment he will have a huge following .
